  Based on Filson's size chart, this means I should wear a small in their jackets (let's ignore the fact that I'm slightly taller and slightly heavier than the "average" and yet require a "small").

I purchased two Filson "Jackets" during the same week, and I've been very disappointed with their lack of consistency when it comes to sizing.  Before I get into specifics, I understand that there is a reason for one garment to be sized a little differently than another (i.e., a Sport Coat would be sized differently than an overcoat), but that doesn't hold here

For a brand that costs as much as Filson does, one would expect for their sizing to be right.  And if it's not right, then one would at least it to be consistent.  Unfortunately, Filson fails in both regards at least with respect to the Hyder and the Short Lined Cruiser.

This jacket does everything I want a Fall jacket to do. Primaloft keeps me warm, the durable outer material is great for days when you’re out and about, and it looks sharp too. I’m 6’3, 210 lbs and a large is slightly long in the sleeves but overall fits very well.

I own a few products by Filson, all nicely made and quality workmanship. This jacket appears to be well made, time will be the test of longevity on this piece. I wouldn’t suggest this jacket for any rugged outdoor use. Definitely nice for light duty and around town work

It’s not always this easy to narrow down competing models and make a top pick, but among windbreaker jackets, the Patagonia Houdini Air is head and shoulders above the rest. Building off the beloved Houdini below, the new Air takes the old formula but adds a ton of breathability and comfort to the mix. The jacket pairs a double-weave liner with a standard nylon shell, offering great wind protection and a softer feel than any other design in its weight class. In many ways, the Houdini Air is the Swiss Army Knife of windbreaker jackets and makes a great option for hiking, running, mountain biking, and a wide variety of other outdoor uses.

Keep in mind that with such a thin shell and air-permeable weave, you do give up some of the bombproof protection of a 100% nylon jacket like the original Houdini. That said, we took the Air out in 60mph, knock-you-over gusts near Patagonia’s Cerro Castillo and felt sufficiently sheltered from the storm. And although the jacket’s DWR coating is impressive, a thicker shell fabric (like that of the Black Diamond Alpine Start below) will offer better wet-weather protection. The Patagonia Houdini is an iconic windbreaker jacket, and as a repeat winner at the top of our podium, continues to set the standard for all other jackets in this category. It performs exactly as a windbreaker should, packing down and stowing away until you need to break it out to protect you from wind or light rain. The entire jacket stuffs into its chest pocket &mdash; the resulting package is only about the size of a small banana. The lightweight package easily clips to a belt, climbing harness, or stashes into the smallest corner of your pack &mdash; it even squeezes comfortably into the tiniest seat bags, making it a great companion for long bike rides. Though it will never compare directly to a rain jacket, the ultralight DWR coating is at the top of its class and does a solid job of balancing wind resistance with breathability.

This piece has been around for years, which has allowed Patagonia to fine-tune the details to get a seriously impressive mix of function and weight savings. The Houdini compacts into a ridiculously lightweight 3.1 ounce package, sure to please even the most hardcore ultralight enthusiast. Despite this absurdly low weight, the Houdini is still impressively wind-resistant and withstood every adventure we wore it on, from climbing and mountain biking to hiking and boating. 
Of course, this impressively thin layer is a bit see-through, particularly in some of its lighter colors. This makes it not the best-looking model we tested. And though it claims to have a DWR coating, it does still eventually get wet &mdash; and a little quicker than some others. Compared to the Patagonia Houdini Air, the Houdini is slightly lighter but slightly less breathable.  I always throw it in my vest, just as a fail-safe when I ran Zion and I got extra cold at night. I threw this on under my heavier jackets, and it was just one more layer of insulation between my skin and so there you have it. The Patagonia Houdini, I love this shell. I would highly recommend it because it's so light and versatile, I always pack it in my vest for my hundred-mile runs if there's any chance of rain, or certainly at night as just an extra layer

I prefer the snug fit which makes it an excellent companion piece to a shell or insulated jacket. For reference I am a tweener sized human, size S Nanopuff and size M Houdini both purchased in 2011. Excellent breathability, cut, comfort.

 Considering its weight, Patagonia nailed all the right features. You can cinch the hem to block out wind at the waist, the half-elastic cuffs seal nicely around the wrists, and a single adjustment at the hood allows you to tighten it down effectively. Finally, the slight drop hem at the back is a nice touch for a little extra coverage. All in all, the amount of versatility you get for the weight is truly remarkable

 And on our trip to Patagonia, I found myself keeping the Houdini close and wearing it daily. It cut the wind nicely when we stopped for lunch while backpacking, and I hiked in it if the weather was cool or the wind was particularly rough. Considering its weight, Patagonia nailed all the right features.
