 It's the earplug. This is actually my pair. I have my own pair of earplugs. They're not custom made, but they are

 I found these guys and I ordered them, and actually when I first got them, I ordered a size that was too big for me. You see, I have very small ear canals. I've actually known this before, and so I've had custom-made earplugs made in the past, and each time I wanted to get the filters that are like hi-fi filters or musicians' filters, as they call them, I wanted the musicians' filters because I just wanted it to cut the frequencies evenly, and I wanted to be able to enjoy the music that I was listening to or the concerts I attended. But after getting the molds taken out of my ears, I would usually get a call from the company saying, by the way, your ear canals aren't big enough, and we need to either cancel your order or use a different filter

.. You can choose the size that you need for the best fit for you. So there's two reasons I really love these earplugs

 One thing I mentioned just now is that you get the size that works best for you. The second thing is these are what you call Hi-Fi earplugs, and they cut the frequency just all evenly from highs to lows, everything just turned down. It's not like using a foam earplug and it's just muffled sounding or you just hear this weird bass sound. It's not like that

And rather than muffling the sound like most foam earplugs, they simply lower the volume while maintaining sound quality. The smalls were definitely better than the mediums, but I still had doubts - they pushed out after 15-20 minutes of wear.  Even lunch time is a nightmare.  I did some extensive research, and landed on Loop Experience (gold). I wanted to be able to hold conversations and hear students/peers, but drown out the louder voices and noises to help keep calm. I'm trying them out at work today in a few different environments

Here is what I know will help you based on my personal experience and the advice of both my family doctor (who plays electric guitar recreationally) and also my Audiologist.   

 Whatever volume you usually listen at, try reducing that just a little bit from now on, it may seem less immersive at first but your ears can adapt over time.  

My dad is virtually deaf. He has never been involved with really loud devices. It's just genetic, it seems. Deafness is running through my dad's family tree and that includes me. I'm 20yo and already, in my group of friends, people have noticed I have trouble hearing them sometimes. It's annoying but we joke about it. Yet, at 20yo, I know it can only get worse.

I've never been to a concert in my life and I'm not much a fan of clubs or bars (I intend on wearing earplugs next time I'll go after the pandemic). So the risk of very loud sounds isn't really an issue. What worries me are my headphones. I always have my headphones on, whether listening to music, podcasts or audiobooks. I'd say maybe 2 thirds of my time awake is spent with headphones on. I'm keeping the volume on an alright level, a volume that allows me to listen to what's the audiobook narrator is saying without having to force my hearing but careful not to raise it louder than it needs to be.

I know my hearing is only going to get worse with age. But seeing my dad so isolated by his hearing loss, I really want to ensure I don't screw it up further than my genetics are already destined to fuck it up themselves. **Tell me every practical thing I can do to minimize hear loss, I'll do it religiously.** I want to look back at 60yo and think I did my best to prevent it as much as I could.

The best earplugs are the ones you can always have on you all the time and actually use - and keep in even when conversing. These are the best ones for me (and I have owned many brands including molded-to-fit ones.) I have been going to music venues for decades and have some hearing damage as a result. Tested these in a loud bar first and could have a conversation pretty easily while reducing music level
