It's just a super, super fun, very playful powder ski, powder freeride ski, but I think calling it a powder ski is perfectly fair, given its width, given the rocker profile, and given how much fun it is in powder

 And just about the same amount of tail rocker back here, maybe a little bit less, but boy, not much less. And then we do get this nice kind of snappy camber underfoot. This 182 centimeter length has a 18 meter turn radius, so maybe on the smaller side for a powder ski in this width, but not like super small by any means, pretty normal radius there. And boy, these skis are just a blast to ski

2023 Dynastar M-Free 108 - SkiEssentials.com Ski Test

I definitely agree with much of what you said, I think the Dynastar M-Free 99/108 needs to be mentioned when looking for skis better than the BC100's, they're better in every way imo

It's not in my nature to single out a target for criticism, but I just can't help myself given the unwarranted popularity of this, in my opinion, highly mediocre ski. So here's my screed - with a caveat or two. Feel free to reference this post the next time some comes asking "Should I get a BC100?"

The BC100 is unusually light for its size: at 1700g for a 180cm ski, it would easily qualify as a touring ski. The ski's shape is fairly similar to the original BC, a 120mm waisted ski that is fantastic in powder. Sounds good right? Here's the problem: at that weight and shape, the BC100 is absolute garbage on firm snow. It edges as poorly as anything I've skied. I have a full rocker Chipotle Banana that is better on ice. Light skis fare much worse in 3D snow - especially if you ski marine snow pack. Dense snow + light ski = more deflection. The experience of dropping in on a BC100, for me, was almost like putting on snow blades. The tips chattered all over the place. I strained to engage the edges. Turning felt more like a loosely-controlled drift than a carve. The faster you go, the worse this ski gets. 

Atomic sells this ski as a "one ski quiver" offering, and in part, this category of skis is victim to the inherent compromises that ski designers have to make. That being said, there are a bunch of skis that excel over the BC100 in virtually all categories: turn initiation, stability at speed, edging, float, etc. etc.

If you're thinking BC100 for an all-mountain \~100+mm OSQ, and my comments register with you, here are some other options to consider:

* Nordica Enforcer 104 - for better carving, lots of fun, adequate float for virtually anything except Japow or AK
* Blizzard Rustler 10 - more rocker than the Enforcer 104, extremely solid underfoot. Does not launch you from one turn to the next, but still a joy to carve.
* Salomon QST 99 or 106 - my most intermediate-friendly recommendation, for accessible, fun, easy balance and still plenty of power
* Armada ARV 106 - for a more a freeride-oriented / playful style, but enough oomph to stick your drops
* Moments, 4FRNTs, ON3Ps, J Skis, Sego for you indie heads
* Literally any other ski (ok that's an exaggeration)

I'll caveat my critique with a concession. If you primarily ski park, and take that level of playfulness to the mountain, the BC100 is probably one of your best choices. If you are a terminal intermediate - you don't carve and you don't wish to progress - the lack of edge hold will feel really forgiving and "easy." This forgiving quality may help some folks feel more confident in bumps and tight spots. I'll also admit that this year's top sheet is beautiful, so I expect this ski will sell well again. And I'll keep my grumpy comments to myself on the slopes: skiing is fun, and I would hate to take the shine off of somebody else's fun. I just hate seeing folks put their leafy green folding dollars - especially at full retail - into a ski that made me a worse skier.

The BC100 is a noodle-y park ski that sucks on ice

The M-Free 108 is a fun ski, it's soft but it's not the softest thing out there. You are looking for a ski that is stable at speed but good in powder, stability means weight. I think you are on the right track looking around mid 100's width for versatility. If you go too wide you are going to have a weird quiver and you can always add a really great dedicated deep day ski later on, think K2 reckoner 122, K2 Mindbender 116c, Bent Chetler 120 or w/e

I'm an advanced skier when it comes to groomers, I've skied the past few years on 86mm under foot skis and primarily stuck to the groomers. I want a second pair of skis to get more fun out of the deep days, ski in powder bowls, trees and tight terrain. I will primarily ski Stevens Pass and Whistler.

Last year I demoed Rossignol Black Ops Sender and thought they were a step in the right direction, but I'm not sure if they are enough ski for me. Should I get something that is even wider? I regret not demoing wider skis, but I had no idea what to expect moving from my 86mm.

Other skis I'm looking at:
- QST106 these seem very similar to the Senders I demoed but have extra mm underfoot. Would they behave similar?
- Black Crows Anima 115 - significantly wider, I have no idea what to expect out of these, but reviews make it seem like a good fit for me. Except they mention the ski isn't good in powder with a forward stance. Coming from years of carving, I ski in a forward stance by default.
- Dynastar M-Free 108 - I liked the reviews, but I also like speed and seems like they don't have good stability at speed. Otherwise they seem interesting, definitely a different ski from the one I own.

 So, new ski, the M-Line in general is brand new for 2021. We got the Free, the Pro, and the Tour within that M-Line and they're really, really cool skis. Dynastar did a great job with these. So, like the M-Pro skis and a lot of skis in the M-Line, this has a hybrid core and they blend Poplar with PU

com. Today I'm at Powder Mountain testing out the Nordica Unleashed 98. Just so you know, I'm not being sponsored or compensated by any brands for these reviews. This is just my unbiased opinion on the skis as I ski them

 Gordicas in general have a reputation for being durable. I've never had any issues with them myself and I've never heard of other people having issues with them, so I would assume that this ski also falls in that category. This ski is definitely for the person who wants to be able to have one ski that can do everything reasonably well. This is a ski that carves well

 For an intermediate skier, you'll be better off with a ski that's a little softer tip to tail and a little bit more maneuverable. Skis work differently for different types of skiers. 2023 Nordica Unleashed 98 Ski Review | Curated

 So wood core with one sheet of terrain specific metal. You know, it's not often we see a twin tip with a full metal laminate, so having this nearly full laminate for Unleashed 98 just makes a lot of sense, and it really kind of boosts that performance. It really works well on the hill as well as on paper. So we do get that wood core and that one sheet of terrain specific metal, so that metal has cutouts along the edges in the forebody and through the tail of the ski, so that keeps it a little bit more playful on the edges while keeping the central spine and the underfoot portion of the ski supremely damp and stable

 So this gives us more effective edge underfoot and a little bit better grip and pop to the snow. Similar taper shape, you know, it is more up into the tip of the ski, again leading to that longer effective edge. It's an incredibly smooth carving ski on the groomers, you know, it's not a front side ski by any stretch but pretty incredible what you can get out of it in terms of that on-piste performance. And then tail, same thing, you know, not quite as dramatic as Soul Rider was but almost there

 So 98mm underfoot, if you followed us along here for any amount of time, you know that we're huge fans of these 98mm underfoot twin tips. What they've done with this one now this year is basically brought in a Santa Ana style build to it. So wood core with one sheet of terrain specific metal.
