 Like most other DPS skis, with the alchemist construction we get an Aspen wood core and two sheets of carbon, so that carbon really does a lot of the heavy lifting that like metal would do in some of these, in a competitor for these skis. But these really set themselves apart by being lighter but performing the same, if not better. Just that those two full sheets of carbon really, really make a big difference in terms of how this ski responds but still has such a light weight to it. In terms of the shaping, the C2 has a longer effective edge than the RP

 So that's why a lot of these DPS skis look pretty unique. In terms of that rocker profile, not a whole lot of camber underfoot, it's going to sit pretty flat on the snow, especially in the soft stuff. A little bit of a turned up tail and pretty dramatic rocker in the tip. So definitely going to get some good flotation here, not a ton of splay, but the combination of that rocker with this tapered shape, that early taper, does make this 106 float pretty darn nicely

 Same thing can be said for the tail, pretty rounded off tail there, not too flat. So if it was flatter, it would keep you locked into the turn more. This more gradually tapered tail shape allows you to dictate the duration and the consistency of the turn, makes a more playful ski when the tip shape is rounded, just more surfy and more smeary. So that's kind of where they're going with the shaping of their skis, and it does work

 that makes a 106 float a lot wider than the number may indicate, and that just has a lot

 Lighter skis float better, so that's why this carbon is an effective material for this ski

 But yeah, if you're looking to get out there and make some bigger turns and softer snow,

 these are incredibly stable for how light they are, and DPS has done a really nice job

 at keeping that progression moving forward with these skis, and they're skis like this.

Didn't get to ski powder but I feel as though they would perform well in anything up to 15-20cm as the previous qst 99 have and possibly deeper (we don't get POW very often here) I know reviews are sparse on these at the moment so happy to give feedback as I ski them some more through the rest of the month.

I have just managed to secure a pair of these in NZ and taken them for their first spin today. I usually ride the qst99 from two facelifts ago.  Today, although it is spring we had a nice winter feel to the mountain and I skied these mainly on groomers with a little off piste but was a bit cruddy. Handles groomers extremely well compared to previous model, to the point I felt I had just been taught to carve again

 The extra rocker in the tail made for some nice playful turns and they felt stable in the air (lighter than previous model?) when jumping  side hits. I chose the 183cm which is probably short for me at 6"2 but it was all I could get over here. Overall, I feel as though I'm going to have some fun on these. Didn't get to ski powder but I feel as though they would perform well in anything up to 15-20cm as the previous qst 99 have and possibly deeper (we don't get POW very often here) I know reviews are sparse on these at the moment so happy to give feedback as I ski them some more through the rest of the month

You might not even fully realize just how much you want a ski like this. For high-volume ski touring, steep-and-rowdy firm-snow ski mountaineering, and work-week, headlamp exercise skinning, a lightweight set-up based on the K2 WayBack 80 is just the ticket. The featherweight construction flies uphill. The narrow and stiff construction grabs on the steeps but gets bucked around in tougher snow. 
This is a specialized tool. You won't pick these for day-to-day backcountry skiing. Deep, perfect powder snow is enjoyable, but bigger guns will be even more fun. Any sort of poor snow &#40;breakable crust? Slop?&#41; is better handled by a bigger and heavier option. All small skis are under-equipped for tough snow, but the K2 does better than most. It is this ski's more forgiving tough-snow performance that edges it ahead of other close competitors.
