A Year with the Desert Tech MDRX (Review)

 Back in, I want to say 2014, I found Desert Tech operating out of a small booth in the

 corner of the LE Tactical Room at SHOT Show back when I was covering SHOT Show for the

 firearm blog, like the written blog. And even though it was kind of a modest location, the

 Desert Tech booth was absolutely slammed up because everyone was taking pictures of the,

 at the time, brand new and unreleased Desert Tech MDR or Micro Dynamic Rifle. At the time,

 I said that the MDR was one of the more exciting items of SHOT Show. It was a gas piston operated

 ambi bullpup rifle with a rotary bolt and an adjustable gas regulator. It's hard to make

 a truly ambi bullpup because even if you so much as turn the gun over to the support side,

 you're going to get, as Carl demonstrates here, brass bukkake. But Desert Tech had this

 part figured out. The MDR was to be a forward eject like the FNFS 2000. Moreover, the MDR's

 ergos were promising. The MDR has an ambi safety and a push button mag release in addition

 to a third Tavor style mag release behind the grip. The MDR also has two identical and

 non-reciprocating charging handles on either side of the upper that collapse and kind of

 fold out of the way when they're not in use. They also function HK style. You can give

 them a little slap and it's going to charge forward when they're locked to the rear. There's

 also another Tavor Q, a bolt release that's towards the rear of the receiver that works

 very well. The piston driven operating system in the MDR was planned to have several settings

 including special settings for when the rifle was extremely fouled or suppressed. It was

 going to accept STANAG AR magazines but, incredibly, it was going to be convertible to.308 and

 accept AR10 mags as well. It was also going to cost the same or less than a Tavor or an

 AUG, that is under $2,000. I was pumped. So, at Shot 2015, what do I do? I try to go back

 to the Desert Tech booth to check on the status of the MDR. I was told that the release date

 was going to be fourth quarter 2015 at the time, so 2016 Shot Show rolls around. Desert

 Tech still hadn't sent me my damn review copy of the MDR that I had requested months, two

 years before, so I swung by the booth to check on these boys again. Still nothing, still

 no hard release date other than possibly at the end of the year. In 2017, I just stopped

 visiting these Utahns who were just going to tell me sweet little lies and break my

 heart again just like they did year after year after year. In 2018, TFB TV finally got

 our hands on the Desert Tech MDR, but it wasn't me because I was over Desert Tech at the time.

 It was our boy Miles and he was either really excited about it or he hit a few key bumps

 before he got on camera. Hey, TFB TV, today we are here with Desert Tech at Shot 2018.

 Maybe both, I don't know. The MDR was finally coming to market and I'm just breaking balls

 here, but Miles did a perfect job with the interview. Desert Tech, on the other hand,

 not such a perfect job. So, you may have seen that Ian and Carl over at InRange TV had a

 hell of a time with their first copy MDR. Alright, so I have had a malfunction here,

 and it's a malfunction where the brass, the empty case, has not quite completely entered

 the ejection port. And malfunction. So even on gas setting 6 after break-in period, Wolf

 is a no-go. Short stroking like we saw with previous to the break-in period being through.

 It was either over gas and ripping off case rims or it wasn't cycling, and in the meantime

 these guys are tuning this gun like a goddamn Steinway piano. So if it had too much gas

 it would rip off the rim of the casing, if it didn't have enough it would short stroke

 and you had to basically field strip the gun. So it was a big nightmare and in response

 Desert Tech did the unthinkable. Did they deny everything? No. Did they have a voluntary

 upgrade program where everybody was going to have to send in their guns on their own

 dime to get them fixed? No. Did they threaten to sue Ian and Carl like petulant children?

 No. What they did is they manned the fuck up, they owned the problems, they fixed them,

 and they told everyone about it publicly on YouTube. They made the fixes available to

 their customers with a new gas regulator and to top it all off they proved that everything

 worked by running 10,000 rounds through a new copy of the Desert Tech MDR with the upgrades

 achieving a 2,000 round mean round between stoppages. That is they only had 5 stoppages

 for every 10,000 rounds. Not bad. Side note, if you want to dig really deep on the MDR,

 I mean really deep, InRange has a ton of videos on their platform that are way more detailed

 than the dumb shit that we're going to get into just today. In 2020, the MDR, even though

 it was only on the market for about two years, was getting a little long in the tooth for

 a company whose motto is tomorrow's weapons. After all, it did debut in January of 2014,

 which wasn't even yesterday, much less tomorrow. Desert Tech had upgrades ready for the MDR,

 including a polymer chassis with a higher glass concentration that would make the receiver
