Crucial MX500 vs Crucial P2

I have over 2,000 hours of operation at the time of this writing on a 4 disk array of these in a hardware RAID 5 on a MegaRAID 9361-8i controller. On the plus side this has partial power loss protection and RAIN protections and it looks like it covers what it needs to while the controller with RAID controller BBU covers the rest. They are also really fast and especially in a 4 disk RAID the performance is quite impressive. One thing I am finding out is hardware RAID tends not to support TRIM

For best results, make sure your target and destination drives are exactly the same capacity, skip the frustrating and buggy Acronis software entirely and download something like Macrium Reflect. Not only is it also free, but it actually works and is not entirely impossible to figure out. The hour+ I spent with steam coming out of my ears trying to get Acronis to do anything at all was wasted time. Macrium installed in a few minutes and in less than 10 minutes of tinkering and reading their online help pages, I was cloning my old drive to my new drive

It is deceptive and annoying, the drives are good, I have yet to see one fail in all the years I have ordered from them and they are priced well. Please don't offer this incentive when it does not work and one google search will show you it is a widespread issue with many people. Someone who has less experience would have a lot of headaches, just remove this option and suggest something that will work. If they continue to use this marketing ploy I am done ordering from them, I will go elsewhere to buy my upgrades

You can spend more for drives that go the full gen3 speed, and have a DRAM cache and those are fine drives. But this is a fine value. Works great. Cl

I wish I'd done it years ago! The hardest part was my failing eyes trying to screw the drive caddy to the new drive. If you can follow simple instructions and a desire to keep your old laptop instead of buying a new one then this is for you BUY IT! The only snag I ran into was my laptop not "seeing" the drive when I plugged it in. It took a while, some reboots, checking my BIOS settings and some Googling, but it was eventually recognized. Honestly, i think i should have just been patient when i initially plugged it in for cloning and waited an hour or so for it to be recognized

This thing is incredibly slow, in some cases much slower than any of my SATA drives, slower than some of my hard drives. Thankfully it is not in a speed sensitive role, just wanted a big enough drive to fit Elder Scrolls Online on my laptop which only has room for a 2280 drive. I find it slightly amusing how easy it is to overwhelm this thing to 15mb/s writes. I think it is probably some kind of ultra dense many layered nand, it just can't write at any reasonable pace past it's cache limits

I have been using Crucial SSDs since 2010. After getting my first one, I never went with a different brand unless there was some unavoidable reason. Crucial has consistently delivered me quality products with excellent performance and longevity. To this day, I still use my first SSD from them and it works just as well as the day I got it

they are, but you have to do things in really precise steps to get them to work. First off, forget their cloning software. I never could get it to work. Also, you cannot install these in an external M2 container and plug them into a USB port

Update (11 Feb 18): I'm not sure whether it is the drive or the solution provided by Crucial in the comments to this review, but I now have a working SSD on my troublesome Windows 10 machine. I followed the suggestion to turn off "Secure Boot" for the clone to see what would happened. I cloned my Win10 HD to aMicron 1100 2TB SATA 6Gb/s 2.5-inch MTFDDAK2T0TBN-1AR1ZABYY using Macrium Reflect (rather than Acronis) with Secure Boot disabled

Installing the latest firmware to the drives using Crucial's tool, doesn't help. Bottom line, don't buy these P2 drives from anybody. Thankfully Amazon has an extended return window for Christmas and I'll be able to return 4 of the drives for a refund.

I bought two of these. This first review is for the 500GB SSD. My review for the 1TB drive is below. This serves two purposes for me

913 x (1.024)^4 = only 1,003,834,500,000 bytes. Competitors like Intel use slightly different chips that give at least 43GB more capacity. Not a very nice situation
