Crucial BX500 vs Samsung 980 Pro

These are about the cheapest devices I have ever seen. Avoid them like the plague. I can't understand how Amazon gives this a 5-star rating, when you look at the reviews and nearly all of then are 1-star. ----- Terrible performing drive

I do think these are a bit pricy even on sale, but if you play a lot of console games, a necessary purchase. 4 stars

Luckily, when I turned the machine off and back on, there was no error. A tip: I'm guessing that an HDD is better at preserving data after failures than an SSD? I'm planning to use a program to mirror the SSD to my old HDD. That way, if I get more errors, I hope I'll be able to recover (assuming the machine doesn't boot and overwrite the HDD with bad data as it crashes). An offline backup will be good insurance too

And just to address the elephant that I’m sure somebody will try to let into the room - yes this case has the completely new PCIe riser in it. No fire risk included.

My company will now order all our SSDs exclusively from another brand from now on. Because they refused to RMA a single drive they literally lost hundreds upon hundreds of sales. So be warned. If >I< a professional IT technician can't satisfy them that I know when an SSD is bad, I hold little hope that the average consumer will experience anything more then a nightmare runaround attempting to get this shady company to honor their warranty

**GPU** As for the GPU, I went with a 3-fan, 2-slot RTX 3060 Ti from EVGA. This case supports even larger 3-slot cards, but I wasn't looking to break the bank on anything fancier than a 3060 Ti. There are 2-fan variants available, but considering I had the space for some extra cooling and I'm hoping this thing runs quietly, I decided to upgrade to a mid-range 3-fan card.

If I'm not mistaken the Samsungs have more cache which speed up the transfer rate of the first 100 GB or so, and the Crucial being cheaper has less cache and only the first 50 GB or so get the faster transfer rate. Otherwise I haven't noticed any other speed differences in the tasks I use it for: web browsing, viewing and storing photos, music, video. If you really just want storage capacity, faster than HDD performance, better than HDD reliability (knock-on-wood) and you don't need the absolute fastest thing, this is a safe way to go. The Samsung is still wonderful and I will be handing it down to my dad for his 2012 MacBook Pro to hopefully get another year or two of use out of it

I installed it as kind of an experiment (to be honest, I wasn't sure the security system would even recognize it, but it did, kudos to Crucial for high compatibility) and while I haven't done the math on write rates and the drive's expected write lifetime, I already am happy for one key reason: this drive is silent and runs cool, where the spinning rust 5" drives were noisy as heck. I'll report back when it dies; if it lasts a year in this service, I'd say that's a great recommendation overall for more normal service regimes.

will i recommend it to a friend? no! do your research and find out which other pcie4.0 m.2 drives beat this one and buy literally any of those.

After installing the Crucial BX500 solid-state hard disk, my two desktops will boot up within seconds and are ready to go.

Not a bad compromise as I at least don’t have to have any software just to do that at start up.
