Best Baby Humidifiers - BabyGearLab

 I must absolutely have peace and quiet in order to sleep, but even with the low amount of noise this machine produces I can't sleep with it turned on; that's just me. Best to have this baby running 1 hour prior to bedtime so the room is properly humidified and then turns it off.  The other thing I find bad about this humidifier is that it starts up noisy if you do not use it after long periods of time. Let me explain, I turn the machine off when I go to bed and when I start it up the next day it's very noisy for exactly 5 minutes and then the loud noise goes away

 I'm now just waiting for the new humidifier to come in. At this point, I down rated it from 4 stars to 3 because of the noise. It was quiet for awhile but became really noisy later on the more I used it.  *****Update 12/21/2011***** I received my new humidifier today and it's a newer model

 It does the job of keeping my room properly humid so that I can breathe and sleep easier during these cold and dry months. I have not encountered the issues which some reviewers have run into such as wet furniture or floors during extensive usage. I let this baby run all day and all night and the area around the machine is nice and dry.  Cleaning is simple by using dish sanitizer or a little bit bleach

 I think the wiring or circuits inside this humidifier are water proof/resistant. I hope it is..

First time owner of a humidifer...

 After cleaning the lens the dvd disk works perfectly. Something to consider when making your purchase of this humidifier.

 I don't know how often the dvd was accessed but the next day, same issue. Cleaned the disk, it still would not read the disk. This game has two disks so I tried the second one which was clean. It would not read the disk

  ***Short version of review and also conclusion to long part of review: If the white dust this humidifier produces with non-distilled water would not bother you or your electronics then I give it five stars.  *Update: Okay I did get around to opening up my xbox 360 (don't do this, it will void your warranty; my warranty expired) and cleaned the lens and the disk again, as it had accumulated more white dust. After cleaning the lens the dvd disk works perfectly. Something to consider when making your purchase of this humidifier

What's with the white dust?

 You also don't want to place the humidifier on the carpet or a towel. This is because the fan vent is on the bottom of the humidifier. By placing it on the carpet (or a towel) you stand a chance of blocking the vent and the humidifier over heating. In an effort to avoid placing the humidifier on a wood surface (or a towel)

 Ok. You can not truly control this. However, by emptying the water basin daily - as it actually states on the humidifier AND in the instructions - you can keep the humidifier working properly. Each time I noticed the mist output decline, I emptied the water basin

 Immediately the humidifier started putting out a strong mist again. In addition, I recommend putting the water tank onto the basin as quickly and precisely as possible and then leave it alone. Do not attempt to move the humidifier to another room/location while full of water. The more you move the humidifier around once you put the tank on top of the basin, the more water that is sloshed around and released from the tank into the basin

Crane Humidifier

 The size of the vapor droplets must be small enough or the unit may add moisture but not really help with breathing (according to my doctor). Whether for personal use or whole room it did not seem to do much for me other than perhaps add moisture to a dry environment. For lungs I found this, and pretty much all non-ultrasonic humidifiers, to be pretty much useless.  *Night Lite? This unit has within it's blue water chamber area, just above the knob, a small light

 Granted humidifiers, at least mine, don't normally last an exceptionally long time, but for the money I would have expected to have gotten 2 winters out of it at least. I am currently searching for a new humidifier and because of the negatives listed above I will not be purchasing this particular model again, or likely any from the same manufacturer.  Note: I noticed some other reviews mentioning the need to use distilled water. I absolutely agree with this and have never used anything but purified reverse osmosis water

 If placed on an end table beside the bed the vapor will shoot upwards and perhaps come down somewhere near your nose or mouth, but I prefer not to take chances when it comes to my ability to breathe. The inability to direct where the vapor goes (even directly to the side would have been nice) is one of the main reasons I gave it only 3 stars. This is more of a room-size humidifier and unfortunately I did not find it very effective for that purpose either.  *Not Ultrasonic

Helpful Info For Those Comparing Humidifiers

 Make sure you have appropriate table and filter or distilled water. My other unit (for my room) has only slightly larger capacity and is warm mist and I feel like it uses less water.  Edit 04/05/18: My toddler has recently managed to pull off the control cap.

 It's also more than a little annoying that you can't really wipe out the inside of the fill tank (the hole is way to small), so you can only rinse it out. I'm not sure how sanitary this is. I did buy the drop-in tank cleaner to help with this, but it's going to cost five bucks a month for the cleaner, and ten bucks a month for the filter. That's a pretty high operating cost

 The only way to make it stop is to give the base a good "whack" on the side or to pick the base up a couple of inches and drop it down on the table. Otherwise, the noise persists and no vapor is created. I can only assume this means that something in the motor mechanism is sticking and preventing the humidifier from functioning.  [UPDATE - Jan

 While you can take the base apart and fiddle around with the fan that makes the noise; the respite from the noise usually lasts only a few days (or even just a few hours). I took mine apart, blew out the dust, lubricated the fan, and within a couple hours it was making noise again. And to be clear, it's not a tolerable noise. It is VERY loud, and the only way to stop it is to whack the base until it stops

After more than a year of trying, I'm giving up on these

 About 1/2 way? I live In a cold house with a supplemental oil enclosed electric radiator to warm up my bedroom. Cold mist makes it feel colder. This unit is really adjustable! I can set it just enough to give me humidity without making me cold. Here's the lowdown from my pediatrician 20 years ago to today, add 1/4 tsp bleach to Your tank when you fill it

 I have cut its usage back to only running it during sleeping hours and in that 6-8 hour period it will generally raise the humidity by only 2-3%.

3) Because this is an ultrasonic humidifier, the mist comes out cool/cold. This causes the vapor to immediately drop to the floor, and especially in the winter when warm air rises and pushes cold air down. The bedroom where I have placed the humidifier is carpeted, and the vapor immediately falls to the carpet and is absorbed there, providing minimal moisture to the actual air in the room.

Small rooms only, and not that great

 If you want to run this humidifier for long periods of time and are worried about the water running out, don't order the white/blue model because it produces more steam and therefore depletes the water level sooner. The all white model is more conservative with the water. However, if you have a larger space, then I think the heavier steam flow of the white/blue is helpful. For reference I use the all white model in an approx 11' x 13' bedroom and the white/blue in an 11' x 16' room

 It's much quieter than a stand-up room fan or a window-mounted AC. Unless you need absolute quiet, the sound from this won't bother you. However, when turned on, this humidifier does have a small, green light that illuminates the inside of the humidifier slightly. It's not very bright, but it's definitely more noticeable than the numbers on your digital alarm clock

 However, if you have a larger space, then I think the heavier steam flow of the white/blue is helpful. For reference I use the all white model in an approx 11' x 13' bedroom and the white/blue in an 11' x 16' room. In both rooms, the humidifier does a great job of adding humidity without ever making the room feel damp.
