The cheap price was what originally sold me on this PSU. Unfortunately the first one I received was defective and I was past the return window to send it back through Amazon so I submitted an RMA with Cooler Master directly. They were easy to work with but it's inconvenient getting through that whole RMA process of emailing back and forth, troubleshooting, packaging up the defective unit and then paying for a shipping label to send it back to them. (Sidenote for Cooler Master if you're reading this: please send a prepaid shipping label to your customers especially if it is your own product that is bad

 Today we're taking a look at Cooler Master's brand new line of enthusiast level SFX Gold power supplies. You know, power supplies don't rank very high on the sexiness scale compared to other PC built components. Other than being a great name for my next garage band, power supply doesn't exactly conjure up images of anything special. Custom cables, yeah, those get some looks, but power supply itself, when's the last time you heard nice PSU? Power supplies just don't get enough appreciation

 And while I can't guarantee you'll turn heads with these in your build, I do think that SFF builders will want to take a good long look at these. These units, especially the 850 watt unit, have been long awaited by the SFF community. And despite the 2020 supply chain disruptions, they have finally arrived. I'll be focusing a little bit more on the 850 watt unit because I do think this is the one that many of you will be interested in for a late 2020 or early 2021 build

 With the recent high-powered GPU releases like the RTX 3090 and Radeon 6900 XT, pretty soon it won't be uncommon for SFF systems to draw upwards of 500 watts at load, even when running a relatively efficient chip like the Zen 3 5600X. Now, while that means that a popular unit like Corsair's SF600 will work, it will be running at close to 80% of its capacity, resulting in lower efficiency, higher operating noise, and can cause more wear on the capacitors. If you're overclocking a higher end Intel 10th gen chip, that's not even going to be a remote possibility. At 250 watt PL2 levels and an RTX 3080, you're looking at more than 600 watts of total system power draw at load

 And despite the 2020 supply chain disruptions, they have finally arrived. I'll be focusing a little bit more on the 850 watt unit because I do think this is the one that many of you will be interested in for a late 2020 or early 2021 build. 850 WATTS!?! Cooler Master's V650 and V850 SFX Gold Power Supplies

 The PSU has coil whine even just plugged in by itself. Psu goes haywire when loading up a game, causing my GPU to also whine, was really dissapointed after replacing the PSU and seeing this 150$ one is worse.

 I have nothing bad to say about it  I got the one that says "japanese capacitors" on the box... it's never caused me any weird "ramp up noises"  Then again, i oversized it :) (you can never have too much PSU power!!

 This is an SFX power supply. It's very small, but it's 850 watts, more than enough to power all of this, even a 75 watt, you know, USB-C VR headset hanging off of the USB-C port on the RX 6800 XT, which is something that NVIDIA jettisoned on the 3000 series cars. You know, they had it on the 2000 series cars, like the 2080 Ti, 2070, 2080. They had that USB-C connector, you know, to power a VR headset, but it just didn't have the power budget to do it with the 3080 and the 3090

 But this one can deliver 850 watts on just 12 volts, if that's what your system calls for. So again, Cooler Master has done it right. Good job, Cooler Master. I'm little

 Have you noticed that GPUs are demanding quite a bit more power these days than previously? We've got the 6800 XT and the 3090, the 3090 is like 450 watts, which is just a little bit of tweaking. I mean, it's 350 watts TGP, but it will trip the overcurrent protection even on 700, 750 watt power supplies. Some of them. That's been a problem that's been reported on our forums and elsewhere

 The power supply manufacturer is to make it a little easier to do the back of the envelope math when you're looking at CPU power, which uses 12 volt rail and GPU power, which uses the 12 volt rail. When you look at that, it's a little easier to figure out, okay, almost all of my power requirements here are going to be on 12 volts, is 850 watts going to be enough? And you got to check the fine print on the power supply because it can be an 850 watt power supply that can't deliver 850 watts on just 12 volts. But this one can deliver 850 watts on just 12 volts, if that's what your system calls for. So again, Cooler Master has done it right

 Although I do, I do I do wish that they included more PCIe connectors for graphics cards because sometimes you do use a high power graphics card in an ITX build and you know having just two 6 plus 2 pins is not quite enough sometimes for a really high-end graphics card. But yeah, this is an 80 plus gold 600 watt hard drive from Corsair and let's take a look inside. As you can see, this is a really small box barely just under the size of two of my hands and there's a brown box inside and we'll just pop that open and see what the power supply looks like. So here you go

 What do we have here? We have some cable ties, we have a little badge there with Corsa on it, power by Corsa, a few screws and they'll be very handy. And we have, so this is your ATX bracket, so essentially this allows you to put your power supply into an ATX slot. Now we're actually going to be using this today because our case is default ATX power supply, we've put an SFX in it, so we're definitely going to be using that. We have our plug, which is always handy

 To be honest, I'm going to have to get some extensions, the 24 pin and the 8 pin are not quite long enough. Now, I have been able to get the 8 pin in, but it's not ideal. So I'll just get a little 20, 30 centimeter extension on each of those and it'll be absolutely fine because the 24 pin especially is going to get in the way of the GPU and obviously that's not going to work. Corsair SF600 Platinum SFX PSU Unboxing and Installation

I had purchased both the 500W SFX-L and the 600W SX600-G for an NCase compact gaming PC project I was working on, and over time, have become summarily disappointed in both products.  The 500W: - Too large to accommodate a full sized GPU in this case..

 Many people have pointed this out, and the only real solution is to replace the fan in it with a similar sized noctua. - Runs noticeably warmer than it's 500W sibling.  The options are limited for small form factor power supplies, and both of these have their faults. I would highly advise steering away from the 600W supply as it does have repeatedly reported reliability issues

 This is a complaint I've read both here, on Newegg, and other various forums. Thought it works in "Silent" mode, even at low levels of load the fan spins up, and is noticeably audible. This was a big problem for me as one of my build parameters was to be ultra-quiet  The 600W: - Started to fail after only 1 year of operation. - The fan is extremely loud, and spins up quickly with even minimal loading

 I almost RMA-ed one once (realized a board fault and canceled the RMA) - Corsair was "business friendly" in manor and willing to help - they issued the RMA without a fight. The only con I have, is that it's better to buy them retail than through a distributor, pricing is near the same and shipping, warranty service is better on the retail side. If you buy 100s at time that may be different - but we buy them 5 - 10 at a time. Okay another con - I have a ton of velvet bags now and no other swag - at some point they should send me a invite to a company party or at least a t-shirt ;)
