The Commencal Meta HT AM really knocked our socks off during testing and was a blast to ride in virtually all situations. The versatile hardtail rolls on 27.5+-inch wheels and tires and charges hard in aggressive terrain and is super playful and fun-loving. Its geometry is aggressive enough to be stable at speed and confidence-inspiring on gnarly trails, yet it's not so long or slack that it becomes a handful at lower speeds or in tighter terrain. The 27.5-inch wheels and moderate reach and wheelbase also help to give the bike an eagerness to get off the ground, manual dips in the trail, and slap some corners. It's also a comfortable and relatively efficient climber that seemed to encourage our testers to get out of the saddle and stay on the gas. Commencal's consumer-direct sales model means that you get a lot for your money, and the Essential build we tested blows the doors off most other bikes in this price range.
Given its plus-sized tires and relatively slack front end, the Meta HT AM isn't the zippiest or most efficient hardtail in the world. Those big ol' tires do provide a nice damp ride feel, but they aren't the fastest rolling, and this bike can feel a little boring on mellower trails and terrain. That said, this isn't intended to be an XC bike, and we think most people riding the Meta HT will probably be having too much fun to care. We were truly impressed by this bike, and we feel it would be a great addition to anyone's bike quiver, or as a low-maintenance daily driver.

The bikes I looked into when I got one last year were the commencal meta ht, canyon stoic (adding this as it came out after I purchased one), Kona honzo, and nuke proof scout. Something in this range will grow with you and give you a really well rounded hardtail that can do everything from tech, flow and dirt jumps. I went with the commencal meta ht essential and love it. All your suggestions for bikes, things to look for or stay away from in a bike are welcome! Trying to make this a post that can be referenced off of for others too. 


1. How can I know what makes a bike valuable? Is there any easy way to guage how good a part/specs are of a bike? (Besides rhe frame material, thats a given)

2. Can you build bikes yourself like computers to be cheaper or is it a completely different story?

3. I know I don't understand wtf the differences between certain parts are, but what about bike lines? For example Trek Roscoe vs Martin ect. What makes all of the bike lines different, and how can I "know" what they are for? (I can assume the numbers mean how top of the line they are, but also is there a certain point that the best of one line wouldnt be worth it compared to another lines lower model?)

4. This one will be a no brainer for you guys, but because I am a noob I have to ask: How does a $500 hardtail compare to a $1000 hardtail? Sure the parts are better, but *what* makes them better?

5. Branching off of #4, what would be the price range for a beginner? From what I have heard I dont like the idea of a super cheap bike, but I dont know if I can take full advantage of something $1500+

6. Obligitory one: at the moment I like flowy, easy-to-go-fast-on trails/parks. I also think offroading in more technical trails is interesting, but I like the roller coaster feel of bike parks better. I have really thought about the Roscoe 7 but then saw the Stance 29 2 and still dont know which is better for my needs as they both are about the same price (lets ignore my point in #5). People say the Stance is good for beginners but is not meant to be "sent" with, can this be bad? I dont want to break a bike for going too crazy lol.


P.S. I think its also worth saying I have a bike, but its really old with spring suspension and rim brakes. So it was good for the time but I cant adjust the suspension down a lot since I am a lightweight. I have thought about upgrading it, but wanted to see my options of getting a modern bike.

It sounds like the type of riding you'll be doing puts you in the full suspension category. The stumpjumper has always been a great platform.

Can't Decide Against Hardtail vs Full-Sus...

 I will say however my santa cruz had it all over the evil on paint finish, and frame finishing.

I am trying to decide between some bikes with a lifetime frame warranty. I've found an Evil Offering GX build, and a Santa Cruz Bronson C S MX build. Would love a hightower, but can't find one right now. I've heard that the offering is super playful, but seems like most people agree SC's customer service is hard to beat. Just looking to get some opinions from people that have owned some of these.

 The rockshox recon fork, the x-fusion rear shock, and the SX drivetrain will be limiting factors on that bike. Or, if you like the Stumpjumper, kick in another 600 and get the Stumpjumper Comp alloy for 3600.

My first full sus was a 2020 Stumpjumper Alloy ST 29er. I progressed past the limitations of those components before the end of the first season I owned it. The rockshox recon fork, the x-fusion rear shock, and the SX drivetrain will be limiting factors on that bike. Or, if you like the Stumpjumper, kick in another 600 and get the Stumpjumper Comp alloy for 3600
