Despite the various technological advancements of density scanning that many wall scanners use, there is nothing more reliable than a magnet finding a screw holding the sheetrock to the stud. That's why the C.H. Hanson 03040 Magnetic Stud Finder is great. Magnets don't get false readings, nor do they have a hard time differentiating between different materials; either it is steel, or it isn't. Magnets work great with sheetrock, and they work even better with plaster and lathe walls, as many older buildings have. The C.H.  As I said in the past. Um, it comes with special magnet. Uh, the magnet is pretty powerful, you know, and it's as small as you see, it fits on your palm of your hand and uh, you could just throw it in your toolbox and it will be. It's a great tool to have for finding studs

 The magnets also made it easy to keep it within easy reach while working on projects - it will hang on ladders or even just on the wall (once you find a nail in a stud), so you know where to find it while you're working.

)  ---  Worth the price vs. a free neodymium magnet from a broken HD? Not really if you've got the HD. But if you don't and like having a level, it's a solid buy for the price and intended use - finding wood studs.

 Still, it's not very good. I've found myself recently turning to the old "knock and listen for a hollow sound" technique rather than trying to dig this stud finder out.

 Whatever the case, it is *very* hard for me to find studs with this stud finder. I have gotten it to stick to the wall exactly twice in the installation of multiple picture frames and furniture anchors. All the other times, I've had to "feel" for the pull of the magnet--which is actually very hard to do reliably because the stud finder itself is rather heavy. Be aware that a good portion of the magnet "hits" this stud finder will produce for you will likely be pretty weak, and you might not even feel them if you aren't that sensitive to weak forces

 Like I said, it's pretty heavy. It's not so heavy that it's difficult to use for whatever reason, but the weight does make it less likely the unit will stick to the wall when it finds a nail or screw. It would be way easier to confirm positive hits of the unit were lighter weight.  The included bubble level is nice, but I'm not sure I understand the point of it, since this stud finder can't be used for measurement and offers no flat sides you can use to draw a line

  Also, because this stud finder absolutely relies on metal objects in the stud, you might miss studs pretty easily if you can't get this close enough to a nail or screw (or if, as I said before, you can't feel the force when you do get it close to a nail or screw).  The other annoying thing to me is the weight. Like I said, it's pretty heavy. It's not so heavy that it's difficult to use for whatever reason, but the weight does make it less likely the unit will stick to the wall when it finds a nail or screw

CH Hanson 03040 Magnetic Stud Finder Review

The StudSensor A100 is Zircon’s newest edge locating electronic stud finder that is sold exclusively on Amazon. The A100 is designed with a smooth, ergonomic rubber grip allowing for a comfortable yet secure hold for any size hand, at any angle. This stud finder uses the most recent technology in density detecting software and circuitry. The scanner has 2 scanning modes to locate the edges of wood and metal studs and joists behind walls, floors, and in ceilings up to 1.5 inches (38 mm) deep. In StudScan Mode, the SS A100 locates the edges of shallower wood or metal studs up to 0.75 of an inch (19 mm) deep. Switch over to DeepScan Mode to double the scanning depth to 1.5 inches (38 mm). This stud sensor is programmed with a WireWarning Detection feature that indicates the presence of live unshielded electrical wires up to 2 inches (50 mm) deep when using either stud scanning modes. Finding studs using this edge finding tool is simple. To get started, install one brand new 9V alkaline battery (not included). Place the unit flat against the wall and press the Power Button to calibrate the sensor. Once you hear a beep indicating calibration is complete, continue to hold the Power Button and slowly slide the tool across the surface. The easy-to-read LCD will alert you as the stud detector approaches the edge of the stud in both scanning modes. Once the edge is detected, the patented arrow-shaped SpotLite Pointer will shine, the translucent base will illuminate, and an audio tone will sound. DO NOT DRILL HERE! Instead, mark the spot in the “V’ marker groove at the head of the tool and continue past the stud. Repeat the process in the opposite direction and mark the opposite edge of the stud. The center of the stud is midway between the two marks. Make sure to note whether the WireWarning Detection is alerting you to live, unshielded AC wiring before drilling between the two marks into the center of the stud. With the Zircon StudSensor A100, you can safely maneuver through the most complicated of projects with the professional confidence that comes from owning a Zircon.

For what it offers, the Zircon StudSensor A100 is an excellent tool. Although it's fairly simple, the few features it possesses are really nice and quite accurate. We found the edge sensing to be accurate to within 1/16 of an inch, and the illuminated arrow it casts on the wall makes for a really nice way to see and mark studs. The Zircon has two settings, StudScan and DeepScan, depending on how deep the material is. The Deepscan can sense 1.5 inches deep. It also does a good job of sensing wires and AC power with its wire warning.
Unlike the fancier models, the A100 doesn't differentiate between wood and metal studs, nor does it have many other features, although Zircon offers other premium &#40;read: pricier&#41; models that do. The A100 also must be held in a certain way to hit the button, although it's fairly ergonomic. Still, this was one of our favorite tools and is useful and accurate for most projects while keeping costs low.

 I will most likely be replacing this with something else from a local big box store that I know sells genuine products.

  Finally, if you need to use Zircon warranty, they will make you pay to ship the part to them and make you pay ten dollars to cover shipping a replacement back, making their warranty service of limited use. If you are looking for a good stud finder, look elsewhere!

Poor Accuracy and Quality

The device itself is not bad. The problem is that I paid a lot for a new unit and what I got was used/refurb inside a cardboard box in bubble wrap with a used manual. If you are going to charge new price, send new item, otherwise, describe as used and price it so. NOT ok
