The Yes. 420 is a powder board from Yes. that is extremely short and nimble.  This board is meant to be ridden substantially shorter than normal and is great for a rider who loves tight trees and quick turns.  It has a large surface area and is lightweight in construction which provides the float that powder seekers love.  It also has a medium flex that is playful, yet responsive when needed.

 It isn't a real sintered base and riding definitely showed why it wasn't as good. I was riding the 2020 148 centimetre model that was set up with my regular angles of positive 12 on the front foot, negative 9 on the back foot and set up to the recommended stance position which meant that it still could be set back further. I weigh 160 pounds or about 72 kilograms and am six foot tall. I was riding this on a very nice powder day with about 20 to 30 centimetres of fresh snow that had fallen the night before so it was great conditions to test a board like this

 Though like you would expect for a board like this it does great things in powder but I found it struggles everywhere else.  Hey it's Locky here with a review of the Yes 420. It was one of the first boards to start the short and wide trend which meant that you didn't need to have a super long board to get good float in powder. You could get the same surface area from a short and wide board that still had the ability to turn very quickly. I'll go through mainly how the 420 floats in powder, how it turns, its pop, speed and overall value

The 420 has a medium flex rating, a directional shape with 12 millimetres of taper as well as a 1.5 centimetre setback stance

 So if you want more tech in it that's why you want this board and we're gonna break it down for you in this review. This board features YES's Pow Rocker 602. Now it's rocker in the nose, flat, and then more rocker in the tail but it's set back a little bit so you have more rocker in the nose than you do in the tail. This board features YES's powder hull camber profile which is flat into a 3D hollowed out hull in the tip in the tail

 It's solid, it gets the job done, it's very skate-like in how you engage it you don't really have to load it up to get the pop you need. You'll want a little bit of fresh snow when you butter with this board especially with the powder hull version but even with the regular. This is a board you're going to be doing more buttering on your nose so you're going to be popping those 180s into it swiveling around and popping right out. There's a little bit of rebound out of it but not a lot it makes it easy to press into it and with that added surface area you just have such a wide platform to butter on

 Now it's rocker in the nose, flat, and then more rocker in the tail but it's set back a little bit so you have more rocker in the nose than you do in the tail. This board features YES's powder hull camber profile which is flat into a 3D hollowed out hull in the tip in the tail. The 420 and the 420 powder hull have that middle of the road powder flex to it. It's slightly directional which means softer nose going into a stiffer tail with a decent amount of torsional flex

 Now when it comes to snap these boards are solid. The powder hull has a little less to it you just lose some of that surface area because of the shaping of the board but by and large it's got enough pop to get you up on top of fresh snow, ollie over a small tree, pop over a rock or two, launch off a cornice. It's solid, it gets the job done, it's very skate-like in how you engage it you don't really have to load it up to get the pop you need. You'll want a little bit of fresh snow when you butter with this board especially with the powder hull version but even with the regular

 This is a board for going into tight trees slashing around doing cutbacks you know it's designed to be a surfboard for the snow for just getting out there and really slashing and having fun. Okay this list might look similar to the one on the 420 and the 420 powder hull because I'm doing this once.  That's just how it engages That's how it's going to lock in and really push Now when you're on edge you feel secure for the most part unless you're on really icy terrain Then the back foot can kick out it wasn't a regular occurrence with me But it happened more than enough times that I took note that it just didn't stay as locked in even as I was trying to drive it from Inside the center of the board and put all my weight into that camber section to really Apex that carve and get it to push through a turn now overall Long swooping carves are really this board's strong suit It's just the best way to carve with this thing is just just swoop from one side Back to the other as you're just traversing around the mountain looking for fresh snow short tight quick carves They take a little bit more effort just due to the width of the board and when you really try to lay it over and do A euro carve it doesn't like it. It just does not like it at all Who's this board for the camber loving powder hound? So I've written this board in a few iterations throughout the history of it being in the yes lineup and Every time I do they've tweaked the powder hull a little bit more to help refine it and make it better this is the best version of it that I've been on to date and The only thing that I can slight this for is on firmer snow and you're skidding to a stop You feel that powder hull grip and you get like a jarring effect. Like you're just sort of skipping a skid That's not a slight by any means against this board because it is a powder board first and foremost That's just something that I felt otherwise it floats. Well, the powder hull works in fresh snow it funnels that Snow out to the side

 Now when it comes to stability This board is stable you might and I stress might feel some chatter in the nose that slightly Reverberates back under the front foot but from that insert pack all the way through the tail You don't feel anything with this board It's just that stiff and stable as this board is traditional camber you do have to load it up to get it to pop And it takes a little bit more effort just do in part to the flex of this board But what you put in is what you get out of it. So don't skip leg day This is a board that's designed for popping pillows Hitting cat track gaps launching little cliffs and whatnot, but you have to be a little bit more calculated with how you engage It's not gonna be like you can just roll in and snap last minute. It's more like okay. I'm gonna load this up I'm gonna pop that's where I'm gonna land and then I'm gonna slash a turn This isn't the best board for doing pow butters with I mean look at the shape on this thing That's that's kind of to be expected here Now with that said with the stiffer flex and camber you want to get your weight way out over the nose and you're really gonna Press into it and that camber is gonna fight you the whole way So be aware that you're gonna be able to pop out of any butter you do But it's gonna fight you as you press into it my recommendation Find a steeper area with fresh snow and really pop into it and really push into it with your weight Almost completely over the nose

 If you don't know what traditional camber is There's no hope for you. I can't help you there That's going to give this board all its load, pop, snap and drop The powder hull refers to the 3d shaping in the nose and the tail and how that'll actually break up the suction on the snow As well as just funnel out fresh powder to give this board more optimal float This board is only available in 154 I wrote this board at Copper Mountain on a day that had a mix of gray skies with pockets of blue coming through there was Low wind six to eight inches of fresh snow Some chunder some like crusty older fresh snow from a couple days before And I wrote this with my Rome black label bindings and my k2 thru-axis boots I will say this this board is stiffer than you think It's definitely past a middle of the road on the freeride powder board spectrum Now with that said you get a ever so slightly softer nose that stiffens up Right in front of the insert pack and then that stiffness stays consistent through the tail With just a little bit of torsional flex to it. Now when it comes to stability This board is stable you might and I stress might feel some chatter in the nose that slightly Reverberates back under the front foot but from that insert pack all the way through the tail You don't feel anything with this board It's just that stiff and stable as this board is traditional camber you do have to load it up to get it to pop And it takes a little bit more effort just do in part to the flex of this board But what you put in is what you get out of it.
