The local Staples has both the Brother MFC-L8900CDW and HP M479fdw all-in-one printers in stock. I want something that is going to be very reliable and long lasting while also having good print and scan quality.

With the latter choice, you will be locked into paying those higher costs for the life of the printer... One commonly overlooked advantage from larger printers such as the MFC-L8900CDW, comes from the ability to use larger toner cartridges which brings the cost per page down significantly

I'm looking at these two models, as well as the Canon MF743Cdw.  The Canon has significantly better reviews on Rtings than the MFC-L3770CDW as far as the quality of color printing.  Of course it is also a higher "tier" of printer with a higher price tag.  

On Rtings, there is a pretty definite "progression" in terms of color image quality as you move farther up the stack - for example the Canon MF644Cdw is obviously worse than the MF743Cdw, and the Brother HL-3270CDW is obviously worse than the MFC-L3770CDW.  However, they don't have a review for the MFC-L8900CDW.

If I go to the Brother MFC-L8900CDW, will I get a step in image quality that brings it reasonably comparable to the Canon MF743Cdw?  Or at least, is the color quality notably better than the L3770CDW?

The prices are:

* Brother MFC-L3770CDW - $430
* Canon MF743CDW - $530
* Brother MFC-L8900CDW - $550

That's pretty much what I've narrowed it down to - I need duplex scanning and if I'm going to shell out that much I'll also take the step to at least entry level color, since it doesn't look like I'll be going back to the office anytime soon.  I don't really have a ton of requirements other than that, although good Linux support would be nice.  I'm familiar with what Brother does there and it's generally fine.  Not interested in HP units.

The canon one seems to have complaints about its ADF unfortunately, which is kind of the whole reason for an upgrade in the first place.  But the color image quality does seem to be notably better than the MFC-L3770CDW.

If there's a worthwhile step in color print quality, I'll do the MFC-L8900CDW, otherwise if it's not then I'll go with the cheaper model.  I don't mind spending what the Canon costs, but I'd rather go with the Brother MFC-L8900CDW for the driver support/etc.  If it's not going to provide the same quality as the Canon but closer to the lower-tier Brother model, I'd save the money and just get the MFC-L3770CDW.

Obviously it's not gonna be inkjet-quality regardless, and mostly this will just be for the occasional color graphics, but if I'm already going to spend almost $300 to get a printer with a duplex scanner (MFC-L2750DW) I might as well check the box on color printing too. Purchase color laser

SO FAR THIS PRINTER IS WORKING GREAT FOR OUR NEEDS. I WORK FOR A SMALL BUSINESS AND WE RECENTLY DOWNSIZED TO THIS PRINTER FROM A BIG COPIER AND WE HAVE NO REGRETS SO FAR. THE ONLY COMPLAINT WE HAVE IS THE SCANNING SPEED, JUST WISH IT WAS A LITTLE BIT FASTER. OTHER THAN THAT WE ARE VERY SATISFIED WITH OUR PURCHASE

GREAT FOR WHAT WE NEEDED

 It had to scan and print duplex. The consumables had to be reasonably priced. Most importantly, it had to support web services like scanning to Google Drive, Dropbox, Box. It had to support cloud printing like Google Cloud Print

 My inkjet-based Epson was no longer cutting it. The ink cartridges were a pain, with nozzles drying up. The world had moved forward, and the Epson couldn’t scan directly to Google Drive. I was doing the USB drive shuffle to move files

Good machine, but has a few problems

 This is a mix of paper stock, with some booklets that I cut in half with a paper cutter, about 30-50 sheets double sided. After separating all of this into individual sheets, of all the varying content, the ADF handles it with aplomb except one item that is made of a very thin front sheet separated from a cardstock thickness back - this single document is not handled by the ADF so I have to take it out and use the flatbed scanner on this (or another scanner). The device really shines here. When scanned to searchable document, it auto rotates individual pages inside the PDF

 This is heavy, it is definitely a two person job to move or install it. Removing the packaging takes 10-15 minutes. From there, connecting to Wifi is very easy from the touchscreen. Connecting to OneDrive for Business uses a computer (one grants the connection from a web browser and then enters a numeric code onto the printer), and from there, it can scan directly to a folder on the OneDrive (or other consumer or business cloud services, SharePoint, etc) with ease

 Today I write this updated review out of my frustration for all the issues this machine can bring, I mean it was fine for a while, and accepting the fact that original toner is beyond unaffordable I kept trying with different generic brands, haven't found any good one yet despite the great reviews. Today the issues with paper jams continued but now with tray 1 (the only tray you can load with paper) and the message that said: tray 1 is "too full," whut?! long story short the sheets kept sticking to the inside only one sheet, prompting me to open the back and pull the paper stuck. I just turned off and walked away to avoid setting fairly new machine on fire. You deserve better, move on with your life, and another printer this thing more a miss than a hit

 Now, this replacement is leaving with stripes across the print, every time! I read this may happen to copies and that you have to clean the glass bed, but no clue why is this happening in actual printed documents! Then the quality of say prints would be subpar the toner would smear out of the paper..." no bueno" I really wanted to like this printer

Paper handling for the M281fdw is about average. You can load up to 251 sheets split between two trays, a 250-sheet main drawer and a 1-sheet override slot located at the top of the main cassette. The Canon MF634Cdw ($799.00 at Walmart)(Opens in a new window) , on the other hand, supports only 151 sheets, split between a 150-sheet drawer, and a 1-sheet bypass

2 cents for monochrome pages and 16.4 for color, and Brother's MFC-L8610CDW costs about 2.5 cents for black and 12.7 cents for color

 The M281fdw is smaller and lighter than the Canon model, and its running costs are a little lower. However, the Canon MF634Cdw prints better and comes with a stronger feature set, including a larger touch screen and an auto-duplexing automatic document feeder (ADF), which the M281fdw lacks. Even so, the M281fdw prints well overall, making it a decent alternative to the Canon MF634Cdw as a low-volume color laser AIO for home-based small offices and small workgroups, or for personal use.

1 cents color, comes to mind, as does several of Brother's INKvestment models, such as the MFC-J5930DW ($1,880.00 at Amazon)(Opens in a new window) . The Brother inkjet AIO delivers under 1 cent per monochrome page and just under 5 cents for color.

 But no matter what I try, the color pictures from the M479 don't look as good as from the M281.  Lastly, for copying Black Text, both models are the same, with the advantage of 2-sided scanning on the M479. But for color copying, the M479 looks terrible. I tried to copy a few pictures (that where original film-to-paper prints or from an inkjet) and the color copies on the M479 look way off

 But when it comes to printing a color picture, the M281 produces better looking and more realistic colors, while the M479 colors are more dull/faded and don't match the original picture. I made sure both printers are using the same color settings and have the newest Firmware and Drivers installed. But no matter what I try, the color pictures from the M479 don't look as good as from the M281.  Lastly, for copying Black Text, both models are the same, with the advantage of 2-sided scanning on the M479

 Tech support is ridiculous. Went through the troubleshooting, entered model, answered questions about it printing too light, then it points me to inkjet cartridges. I tried all other options I found on youtube and forums. Now I'm supposed to take the thing apart? After one set of cartridges and less than usual use?

I work a virtual job as a Systems Analyst and needed a quick and easy to use printer to replace my all in one HP inkjet (just not enough for the print volume I have now) for both myself as well as my wife who is very tech challenged and my children. I have always used HP printers going back to my days at Dell back in 2000 and HP has always been to me a quality and super long lasting printer (I am running 9 years now on the same HP P2055DN Laserjet). That said my criteria was for the printer to handle color prints, duplex printing, flatbed scanning, feeder scanning, fax and scan to email. The HP LaserJet Pro M281FDW met all the criteria for me while also being a great price

 Using this software you can choose two-sided in the scan options and if you scan one side in a stack, pull the stack from the output tray, rotate (DO NOT FLIP) the stack 180 degrees and place it back in the tray the add pages in the scan, it will auto sort the second side in the correct orientation in the correct order with the first set of scanned pages.  Final thoughts – This is a great printer that continues to support how I feel about every HP product I buy (I own a HP Envy Desktop and have owned 5 HP printers over the years), HP stands for long lasting quality in an easy to use product. If I had ANY con at all it would be regarding HP leaving out duplex scanning in an All-In-One printer, other than that lapse in design, this printer is HP perfection.

  Print speed/quality – The print speed is very fast both color and black and white and of course is lightspeed compared to the inkjet we are replacing. We are seeing about 20 ppm on average. The print quality on Cardstock, 24lb bright white paper, and 32lb premium glass paper that I have used are ALL excellent and look professionally printed. Duplex printing works flawlessly even with Cardstock

  Scanning – Scanning is a breeze whether it be on the flatbed manually or via the document feeder, if there is a drawback with this printer it is the lack of automatic duplex scanning via the document feeder. This is however very easily overcome if you go to downloads page for this printer on the HP Support website, download and run the “HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M281fdw/M281cdw Printer Full Software Solution” and use the HP Scan software it installs. How my little business here at home affected my warranty is beyond me, but now I am out a printer, again, even AFTER getting the warranty. DO NOT BUY THIS PRINTER, and whatever you do, DO NOT BY THE EXTENDED WARRANTY!! They will just find a way to not honor it!
