The local Staples has both the Brother MFC-L8900CDW and HP M479fdw all-in-one printers in stock. I want something that is going to be very reliable and long lasting while also having good print and scan quality.

With the latter choice, you will be locked into paying those higher costs for the life of the printer... One commonly overlooked advantage from larger printers such as the MFC-L8900CDW, comes from the ability to use larger toner cartridges which brings the cost per page down significantly

I'm looking at these two models, as well as the Canon MF743Cdw.  The Canon has significantly better reviews on Rtings than the MFC-L3770CDW as far as the quality of color printing.  Of course it is also a higher "tier" of printer with a higher price tag.  

On Rtings, there is a pretty definite "progression" in terms of color image quality as you move farther up the stack - for example the Canon MF644Cdw is obviously worse than the MF743Cdw, and the Brother HL-3270CDW is obviously worse than the MFC-L3770CDW.  However, they don't have a review for the MFC-L8900CDW.

If I go to the Brother MFC-L8900CDW, will I get a step in image quality that brings it reasonably comparable to the Canon MF743Cdw?  Or at least, is the color quality notably better than the L3770CDW?

The prices are:

* Canon MF743CDW - $530
* Brother MFC-L8900CDW - $550

That's pretty much what I've narrowed it down to - I need duplex scanning and if I'm going to shell out that much I'll also take the step to at least entry level color, since it doesn't look like I'll be going back to the office anytime soon.  I don't really have a ton of requirements other than that, although good Linux support would be nice.  I'm familiar with what Brother does there and it's generally fine.  Not interested in HP units.

The canon one seems to have complaints about its ADF unfortunately, which is kind of the whole reason for an upgrade in the first place.  But the color image quality does seem to be notably better than the MFC-L3770CDW.

Purchase color laser

SO FAR THIS PRINTER IS WORKING GREAT FOR OUR NEEDS. I WORK FOR A SMALL BUSINESS AND WE RECENTLY DOWNSIZED TO THIS PRINTER FROM A BIG COPIER AND WE HAVE NO REGRETS SO FAR. THE ONLY COMPLAINT WE HAVE IS THE SCANNING SPEED, JUST WISH IT WAS A LITTLE BIT FASTER. OTHER THAN THAT WE ARE VERY SATISFIED WITH OUR PURCHASE

GREAT FOR WHAT WE NEEDED

 It had to scan and print duplex. The consumables had to be reasonably priced. Most importantly, it had to support web services like scanning to Google Drive, Dropbox, Box. It had to support cloud printing like Google Cloud Print

 My inkjet-based Epson was no longer cutting it. The ink cartridges were a pain, with nozzles drying up. The world had moved forward, and the Epson couldn’t scan directly to Google Drive. I was doing the USB drive shuffle to move files

Good machine, but has a few problems

 This is a mix of paper stock, with some booklets that I cut in half with a paper cutter, about 30-50 sheets double sided. After separating all of this into individual sheets, of all the varying content, the ADF handles it with aplomb except one item that is made of a very thin front sheet separated from a cardstock thickness back - this single document is not handled by the ADF so I have to take it out and use the flatbed scanner on this (or another scanner). The device really shines here. When scanned to searchable document, it auto rotates individual pages inside the PDF

 This is heavy, it is definitely a two person job to move or install it. Removing the packaging takes 10-15 minutes. From there, connecting to Wifi is very easy from the touchscreen. Connecting to OneDrive for Business uses a computer (one grants the connection from a web browser and then enters a numeric code onto the printer), and from there, it can scan directly to a folder on the OneDrive (or other consumer or business cloud services, SharePoint, etc) with ease

If your job includes retouching photos or upscaling photos, the HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP-M479fdw is a better choice. While you can't print as many pages with it before the black toner runs out, it scans five times faster, and it has a higher maximum scanning resolution than the Canon imageCLASS MF743Cdw. You'll have more pixels to work with when upscaling your document or making edits to small details. The default scanning resolution is only 75 DPI, which looks bad when scanning a letter-size document, so make sure to change it first for the best results.  I'd suspect that Canon does the same, but I haven't read much about it. In any case, reliability and performance can only be guaranteed if you use genuine OEM supplies, and it's particularly risky to use third-party supplies in color laser printers because of their complexity compared to monochrome printers.

Note that HP is very restrictive with cartridges. While you can use a remanufactured or refilled cartridge with an original HP chip, cartridges with non-HP chips should not be expected to work. I'd suspect that Canon does the same, but I haven't read much about it. In any case, reliability and performance can only be guaranteed if you use genuine OEM supplies, and it's particularly risky to use third-party supplies in color laser printers because of their complexity compared to monochrome printers

The Brother MFC-L3770CDW has relatively high running costs. If you're willing to spend a bit more, look at the Canon Color imageCLASS MF743Cdw and HP Color LaserJet Pro M479fdw (both use the same underlying Canon print engine). Canon and HP laser printers do allow you to run cartridges past end of life, but image quality obviously isn't going to be guaranteed.

 But the loud cooling fan and high-voltage electrical buzzing on the M479 are a deal-breaker for me. Between the two, I just like the M281fdw more, it prints better colors, is a quieter and smaller unit, and feels better made.

  HP customer support was great and got us in touch with Amazon support to get a replacement processing. Unfortunately, the product is out of stock so we're just out of luck for a few weeks. I guess this is ultimately a cautionary tale on warehouse ordering online instead of a brick-and-mortar office store chain that may have been more capable and willing to expedite a replacement.  Our business will just have to cross our fingers whenever we click print for a few weeks I guess

I think that's just life, though.

 However, make sure you have a calming cup of tea (or a jar of lithium pills) next to you while you spend half of your day trying to get the printer to connect to your computer properly.  HP should really hire true software engineers and stop having free interns develop their software interfaces.  If you have a Tourette Syndrome or have a habit of taking a chainsaw to things after thinking they should "just work out of the box", then this printer is NOT for you. You've been warned

 A wireless laser printer released in 2019 should not have this kind of fall out. Hope firmware update will fix it later. BTW, HP designed this printer with the security in mind, but it should have shipped the printer with a legitimate CA instead of trying to have user hack around the https security setting. 2
