The local Staples has both the Brother MFC-L8900CDW and HP M479fdw all-in-one printers in stock. I want something that is going to be very reliable and long lasting while also having good print and scan quality.

I'm looking at these two models, as well as the Canon MF743Cdw.  The Canon has significantly better reviews on Rtings than the MFC-L3770CDW as far as the quality of color printing.  Of course it is also a higher "tier" of printer with a higher price tag.  

On Rtings, there is a pretty definite "progression" in terms of color image quality as you move farther up the stack - for example the Canon MF644Cdw is obviously worse than the MF743Cdw, and the Brother HL-3270CDW is obviously worse than the MFC-L3770CDW.  However, they don't have a review for the MFC-L8900CDW.

If I go to the Brother MFC-L8900CDW, will I get a step in image quality that brings it reasonably comparable to the Canon MF743Cdw?  Or at least, is the color quality notably better than the L3770CDW?

The prices are:

That's pretty much what I've narrowed it down to - I need duplex scanning and if I'm going to shell out that much I'll also take the step to at least entry level color, since it doesn't look like I'll be going back to the office anytime soon.  I don't really have a ton of requirements other than that, although good Linux support would be nice.  I'm familiar with what Brother does there and it's generally fine.  Not interested in HP units.

SO FAR THIS PRINTER IS WORKING GREAT FOR OUR NEEDS. I WORK FOR A SMALL BUSINESS AND WE RECENTLY DOWNSIZED TO THIS PRINTER FROM A BIG COPIER AND WE HAVE NO REGRETS SO FAR. THE ONLY COMPLAINT WE HAVE IS THE SCANNING SPEED, JUST WISH IT WAS A LITTLE BIT FASTER. OTHER THAN THAT WE ARE VERY SATISFIED WITH OUR PURCHASE

GREAT FOR WHAT WE NEEDED

 It had to scan and print duplex. The consumables had to be reasonably priced. Most importantly, it had to support web services like scanning to Google Drive, Dropbox, Box. It had to support cloud printing like Google Cloud Print

 My inkjet-based Epson was no longer cutting it. The ink cartridges were a pain, with nozzles drying up. The world had moved forward, and the Epson couldn’t scan directly to Google Drive. I was doing the USB drive shuffle to move files

Good machine, but has a few problems

 This is a mix of paper stock, with some booklets that I cut in half with a paper cutter, about 30-50 sheets double sided. After separating all of this into individual sheets, of all the varying content, the ADF handles it with aplomb except one item that is made of a very thin front sheet separated from a cardstock thickness back - this single document is not handled by the ADF so I have to take it out and use the flatbed scanner on this (or another scanner). The device really shines here. When scanned to searchable document, it auto rotates individual pages inside the PDF

 This is heavy, it is definitely a two person job to move or install it. Removing the packaging takes 10-15 minutes. From there, connecting to Wifi is very easy from the touchscreen. Connecting to OneDrive for Business uses a computer (one grants the connection from a web browser and then enters a numeric code onto the printer), and from there, it can scan directly to a folder on the OneDrive (or other consumer or business cloud services, SharePoint, etc) with ease

The best supertank printer with AirPrint we've tested is the Epson EcoTank ET-3850. The successor to the Epson EcoTank ET-3760, it provides exceptionally high page yields that are even better than the ET-3760. Also, since it uses the same ink bottles, the cost-per-print is a bit cheaper, and you can use the same bottles if you're looking to upgrade to the newer model.

It's also one of the best printers for iPad and iPhone printing we've tested, thanks to its great array of connectivity options. Alongside Apple AirPrint and Mopria Print Service, it integrates with Apple's Siri or Amazon Alexa for voice-activated printing. In addition, it has a high-resolution flatbed with extendable lid hinges to accommodate thicker items like books, and its automatic document feeder allows you to digitize multi-page documents without having to manually scan each one.

Unfortunately, it's slow to print color documents and photos, although it's decently fast when printing black text documents. It prints decent-quality photos, but since blues and greens look very inaccurate, photos with lots of trees, sky, or ocean could look noticeably off. That said, it's still a good option if you're looking for an AirPrint-compatible printer with a high-capacity supertank.

If you print a lot and need a printer with a high page yield, we recommend getting a SuperTank model, like the Epson EcoTank ET-3850. It's an inkjet printer with refillable ink tanks, so instead of replacing cartridges, you just refill the tanks as you go. The inks come in bottles, and they're relatively inexpensive, which helps keep costs low, even if you print a lot.

As for its printing speed, it performs decently overall. It prints 15 black pages or seven color pages per minute, and it takes roughly 15 seconds to wake from an idle state and get a single page out. It can perform double-sided printing and has a 250-sheet input tray. It prints pretty decent-looking photos, although colors aren't very accurate, and there's some graininess in the photos.

Unfortunately, the scanner can only scan three pages per minute, even with an automatic document feeder. Also, it can't perform double-sided scans, which means you'll still have to flip the pages manually. The build quality is just okay as some parts, like the ADF, feel flimsy, but overall, this is a good option if you print a lot.

Epson, another Japanese electronics company, is part of the Seiko group. The company started making printers in 1964 when Tokyo hosted the Summer Olympics, and Seiko, the official timekeeper for the games, needed to make an electronic printer for timesheets. By 1975, Seiko came out with the name Epson, short for &quot;Son of Electronic Printers,&quot; and since then, they've been a leader in the world of printing. Their printer lineup features a wide range of models aimed at home or business use, and they even have dedicated photo printers. Their supertank lineup is popular since its refillable ink tanks yield significantly more pages than ink cartridges, which is also less wasteful.

The best Epson printer we've tested is the Epson EcoTank ET-3850. The replacement to the Epson EcoTank ET-3760, it's also an all-in-one model featuring a cartridgeless supertank ink system. This gives it a yield of over 7,000 black pages and more than 4,000 color pages from just one set of ink bottles, meaning the cost-per-print is incredibly low. It makes it a superb choice if you need to print in bulk and don't want to spend a fortune. It prints decent-quality photos, great for printing lots of flyers, while its ADF and high-resolution flatbed make it easy to bulk-print copies of scans or to digitize different media types. For connectivity, there are a variety of options, including Wi-Fi Direct and an Ethernet port. Sadly, it's a bit slow to print, so you'll need to set aside some time for large print jobs. Also, its color accuracy is poor, and photos have a slight bluish tint to them. For a more similar but office-oriented option, there's the Epson EcoTank ET-4760 which has a built-in fax and prints faster but is difficult to find in stock at a good price. Overall, the ET-3850 is a great choice, with many different features that make it great for many uses.

If you're looking for an all-in-one model for high-yield printing, check out the Epson EcoTank ET-3850. It is a supertank model that uses four refillable tanks that hold a lot more ink than traditional cartridge printers, meaning you can print lots of pages before the tanks start running empty. Its ink bottles are pretty cheap for the amount of ink you get, which helps keep its cost-per-print extremely low.

Like every model on this list, this model has both a flatbed scanner and an automatic document feeder, so there's an easy way to scan your documents, no matter what you're scanning. The scanner has OCR technology built-in, which means you can save your scans as Searchable PDFs which lets you easily search and copy the text in the sheets you scan.

Unfortunately, the ADF scans pretty slowly at 3 PPM, but it shouldn't be a problem for home use, so long as you don't need to scan 20-page forms. Also, the ADF can't scan double-sided sheets automatically, so you'll need to flip the sheets over yourself. This supertank model is still a great addition to your home if you're looking for an all-in-one to print lots of pages with.

If you want to pay even less for ink, check out the Epson EcoTank ET-3850. While the printer itself costs more, its ink bottles are cheaper than the Brother MFC-J4335DW's cartridges, and they last even longer. It means you won't have to buy them as often, saving you even more money. The unit comes with a high-resolution flatbed scanner and an automatic document feeder, so you can easily digitize reports or forms. It also has an adequate display screen that offers good visibility when seated or standing, and you can tilt the front panel to get a better view if needed. Unfortunately, it prints and scans slower, and photos overall have a cool tone, so they might not look quite like the originals.

You'll be happy with the Brother printer if you don't want to pay too much for a printer upfront but still want to save money on costs. However, if you don't mind spending the extra two hundred to save a lot more money in the long run, get the Epson.

If you only need a printer for document printing and general office tasks, you can save some money with the Epson EcoTank ET-3850 instead of an expensive photo printer like the Epson EcoTank Photo ET-8550. It's also an all-in-one color inkjet model with a refillable ink tank, so it's a great choice for households that print a lot, as a full ink tank yields thousands of pages. It prints black and color documents well and does so at a decent speed, churning out 15 black or seven color pages per minute. Printed photos look detailed and colorful, albeit not very color-accurate as it tends to oversaturate the colors slightly.

A reliable ink-tank (refillable) printer?

The ink costs on the Workforce Pro 3820 are significant. I would take that one off your list unless you want to pay $20-40 for each color ink cartridge.
