The local Staples has both the Brother MFC-L8900CDW and HP M479fdw all-in-one printers in stock. I want something that is going to be very reliable and long lasting while also having good print and scan quality.

With the latter choice, you will be locked into paying those higher costs for the life of the printer... One commonly overlooked advantage from larger printers such as the MFC-L8900CDW, comes from the ability to use larger toner cartridges which brings the cost per page down significantly

I'm looking at these two models, as well as the Canon MF743Cdw.  The Canon has significantly better reviews on Rtings than the MFC-L3770CDW as far as the quality of color printing.  Of course it is also a higher "tier" of printer with a higher price tag.  

On Rtings, there is a pretty definite "progression" in terms of color image quality as you move farther up the stack - for example the Canon MF644Cdw is obviously worse than the MF743Cdw, and the Brother HL-3270CDW is obviously worse than the MFC-L3770CDW.  However, they don't have a review for the MFC-L8900CDW.

If I go to the Brother MFC-L8900CDW, will I get a step in image quality that brings it reasonably comparable to the Canon MF743Cdw?  Or at least, is the color quality notably better than the L3770CDW?

The prices are:

* Canon MF743CDW - $530
* Brother MFC-L8900CDW - $550

That's pretty much what I've narrowed it down to - I need duplex scanning and if I'm going to shell out that much I'll also take the step to at least entry level color, since it doesn't look like I'll be going back to the office anytime soon. Purchase color laser

SO FAR THIS PRINTER IS WORKING GREAT FOR OUR NEEDS. I WORK FOR A SMALL BUSINESS AND WE RECENTLY DOWNSIZED TO THIS PRINTER FROM A BIG COPIER AND WE HAVE NO REGRETS SO FAR. THE ONLY COMPLAINT WE HAVE IS THE SCANNING SPEED, JUST WISH IT WAS A LITTLE BIT FASTER. OTHER THAN THAT WE ARE VERY SATISFIED WITH OUR PURCHASE

GREAT FOR WHAT WE NEEDED

 It had to scan and print duplex. The consumables had to be reasonably priced. Most importantly, it had to support web services like scanning to Google Drive, Dropbox, Box. It had to support cloud printing like Google Cloud Print

 My inkjet-based Epson was no longer cutting it. The ink cartridges were a pain, with nozzles drying up. The world had moved forward, and the Epson couldn’t scan directly to Google Drive. I was doing the USB drive shuffle to move files

Good machine, but has a few problems

 This is a mix of paper stock, with some booklets that I cut in half with a paper cutter, about 30-50 sheets double sided. After separating all of this into individual sheets, of all the varying content, the ADF handles it with aplomb except one item that is made of a very thin front sheet separated from a cardstock thickness back - this single document is not handled by the ADF so I have to take it out and use the flatbed scanner on this (or another scanner). The device really shines here. When scanned to searchable document, it auto rotates individual pages inside the PDF

 This is heavy, it is definitely a two person job to move or install it. Removing the packaging takes 10-15 minutes. From there, connecting to Wifi is very easy from the touchscreen. Connecting to OneDrive for Business uses a computer (one grants the connection from a web browser and then enters a numeric code onto the printer), and from there, it can scan directly to a folder on the OneDrive (or other consumer or business cloud services, SharePoint, etc) with ease

Need an all-in-one laser printer with a scanner? We recommend the Canon imageCLASS MF242dw. Like our cheap laser pick, it's also an affordable monochrome laser printer; however, it has a flatbed scanner on top, and it's only available at Walmart as it's a retailer-exclusive model. It feels well-built and sturdy, and it has many connectivity options, allowing you to connect via a wired Ethernet or USB connection or wirelessly over Wi-Fi. It also supports Apple AirPrint and Morpia Print Service, so there's no need to worry about installing drivers.

This model can print very quickly, up to 28 pages per minute, and it can wake from an idle state and get a single page out in under nine seconds. A single toner cartridge yields almost 4000 pages, which means you won't have to replace it often unless you regularly print in bulk, and it accepts third-party toner, which may help you save money. As you would expect, the cost-per-print is exceptionally low, and you don't even have to worry about replacing the drum unit because it's in the cartridge.

As for the scanner itself, it's functional but not the most feature-rich. It can only scan up to a resolution of 600 DPI, and it doesn't have an automatic document feeder, so you have to scan each page manually. However, it does have an optical character recognition feature built into the software, which allows you to scan documents into text files for quick editing. Very surprising was how well the MF232w printed our test photographs. The conversion from color to grayscale was very well implemented, and the images themselves were more detailed, with seemingly more shades of gray than I usually see from most monochrome laser AIOs. The images were about as good-looking as you can get when printing color photos on a black-and-white printer. 

5 cents per page, the MF232w's running costs are right up there among the highest. That matches all the printers discussed here, except the HP M130fw's cost per page, which runs even higher, at 3.9 cents. These running costs, unfortunately, relegate these otherwise reasonably fast and well-printing monochrome laser AIOs to relatively low-volume printing, say, no more than about 200 to 300 pages per month

 What you do get with this sub-$200 laser AIO, however, is decent print speeds and good output quality for the price, as well as competitive running costs. That makes it a sensible choice for low-volume printing and copying from a home-based or small or micro office or workgroup, or as a low-volume personal laser AIO.

In addition to Wi-Fi Direct, the MF232w supports several third-party mobile connectivity options, such as Apple AirPrint, Google Cloud Print, Mopria Print Services, and Canon's own Canon Print Business. Canon Print Business helps you connect to various cloud sites and print from email.  NEVER received a response from seller regarding my concerns. Contacted Canon directly who verified that the printing was in the quality range. This is not my first laser printer, but I am not satisfied/pleased with this printer, as well as the fact that no response was ever received from the seller.

This is a great All in One Laser Printer and an excellent value for $100.  It even does duplex printing.  I commend Walmart for selling it at this price point rather than jacking the price and gouging consumers like every other store that carries it.

Excellent Value

 The size of it is a bit taller than I was expecting and I had to do a bit of rearranging on my desk so be sure to check the measurements. It's pretty quiet when printing, I can make a call on my headset sitting right next to it and the other person said they could not hear it at all. The lid you open and close to make copies is substantial and not flimsy at all. Overall a good multi-function machine, I would recommend

Wi-fi setup was easy and straightforward.  The print is crisp however, much lighter than normal. I've read another review listing the aftermarket LINKYO Compatible Toner Cartridge Replacement for Canon 137 9435B001AA remedies this. I've ordered same from amazon but, haven't installed yet
