The local Staples has both the Brother MFC-L8900CDW and HP M479fdw all-in-one printers in stock. I want something that is going to be very reliable and long lasting while also having good print and scan quality.

With the latter choice, you will be locked into paying those higher costs for the life of the printer... One commonly overlooked advantage from larger printers such as the MFC-L8900CDW, comes from the ability to use larger toner cartridges which brings the cost per page down significantly

I'm looking at these two models, as well as the Canon MF743Cdw.  The Canon has significantly better reviews on Rtings than the MFC-L3770CDW as far as the quality of color printing.  Of course it is also a higher "tier" of printer with a higher price tag.  

On Rtings, there is a pretty definite "progression" in terms of color image quality as you move farther up the stack - for example the Canon MF644Cdw is obviously worse than the MF743Cdw, and the Brother HL-3270CDW is obviously worse than the MFC-L3770CDW.  However, they don't have a review for the MFC-L8900CDW.

If I go to the Brother MFC-L8900CDW, will I get a step in image quality that brings it reasonably comparable to the Canon MF743Cdw?  Or at least, is the color quality notably better than the L3770CDW?

The prices are:

* Canon MF743CDW - $530
* Brother MFC-L8900CDW - $550

That's pretty much what I've narrowed it down to - I need duplex scanning and if I'm going to shell out that much I'll also take the step to at least entry level color, since it doesn't look like I'll be going back to the office anytime soon. SO FAR THIS PRINTER IS WORKING GREAT FOR OUR NEEDS. I WORK FOR A SMALL BUSINESS AND WE RECENTLY DOWNSIZED TO THIS PRINTER FROM A BIG COPIER AND WE HAVE NO REGRETS SO FAR. THE ONLY COMPLAINT WE HAVE IS THE SCANNING SPEED, JUST WISH IT WAS A LITTLE BIT FASTER. OTHER THAN THAT WE ARE VERY SATISFIED WITH OUR PURCHASE

GREAT FOR WHAT WE NEEDED

 It had to scan and print duplex. The consumables had to be reasonably priced. Most importantly, it had to support web services like scanning to Google Drive, Dropbox, Box. It had to support cloud printing like Google Cloud Print

 My inkjet-based Epson was no longer cutting it. The ink cartridges were a pain, with nozzles drying up. The world had moved forward, and the Epson couldn’t scan directly to Google Drive. I was doing the USB drive shuffle to move files

Good machine, but has a few problems

 This is a mix of paper stock, with some booklets that I cut in half with a paper cutter, about 30-50 sheets double sided. After separating all of this into individual sheets, of all the varying content, the ADF handles it with aplomb except one item that is made of a very thin front sheet separated from a cardstock thickness back - this single document is not handled by the ADF so I have to take it out and use the flatbed scanner on this (or another scanner). The device really shines here. When scanned to searchable document, it auto rotates individual pages inside the PDF

 This is heavy, it is definitely a two person job to move or install it. Removing the packaging takes 10-15 minutes. From there, connecting to Wifi is very easy from the touchscreen. Connecting to OneDrive for Business uses a computer (one grants the connection from a web browser and then enters a numeric code onto the printer), and from there, it can scan directly to a folder on the OneDrive (or other consumer or business cloud services, SharePoint, etc) with ease

  Everything you do on this printer is through a touchscreen and web page you access using the IP address of the printer. The response is a bit sluggish, Canon could put a better processor in it, but it's useable.  AirPrint - I have an Iphone, iPad and Macbook Pro, no problem Airprint and Macos printer setup work perfectly, no extra software necessary  Scan to Email - this is a big one for me, I setup scan to Gmail and configured two preset buttons for this on the printer menu. The setup instructions are not intuitive, you must do it through the remote web interface (browse to the ip address) and also you must go to the network port menu and change the smtp port to 587 for gmail, but it works perfectly

  Paper Handling - Tray is small 100-150 sheets, ok for home use. Scanner ADP feeder works flawlessly  Price - At $209 delivered with a 3 year warranty, this is a STEAL, this is a $400 printer  Issues:  The printer insists on going into sleep mode and loses network, cannot be seen be AirPrint or Mac OSX until powered off.  I’ve resigned myself that this is just not an always on printer, if you can live with just turning it on when you need to use it then it’s fine, sleep mode cannot be set to longer than 4 hours and I don’t see any recovery than turning the printer of and on to reconnect to the network. FOR THIS I GIVE IT 4 stars instead of 5  Canon Mac driver does not permit printing color document in Black and White, Apple native drivers do  I setup Google print, and I didn't have it configured correctly, what happens is that periodically the printer displays a error message and the network goes offline

  Print Quality - only have it one day, but the print quality is amazing, out of the box I put a magazine in the scanner, hit copy and I couldn't distinguish the copy from the color magazine cover.  Easiest printer setup I've ever seen - All cartridges are pre-installed, kudos to Canon. just take the tape off and config your network  Network setup dead simple in seconds - I used the WPS Router Pin code method, if your router doesn't do this, get a new router. You end up entering a pin number into the printer that your router issues and the setup is completed, no passwords, etc

I just received my MF644 and here's a couple thoughts from the first couple hours. I'm a typical user not a paid reviewer, although a bit more sophisticated because I'm an IT professional, so read the whole review.  Print Quality - only have it one day, but the print quality is amazing, out of the box I put a magazine in the scanner, hit copy and I couldn't distinguish the copy from the color magazine cover.  Easiest printer setup I've ever seen - All cartridges are pre-installed, kudos to Canon

 When I finally received shipment, I was disappointed to receive a single black toner cartridge for over $100, when Amazon.com provided all four colors of Toner Kingdom's product for under $80. When i called the number on the packing slip to initiate a return, the voice menu told me to choose Option 2 for existing orders, which sent me to a recorded message to go to the web. I had to call back and select Option 1 for new orders to talk to a person, who gave me the required RMA and informed me that I had to ship the toner cartridge at my own cost

  Canon makes great products but provided bad service. I was initially enthusiastic about the idea that I could order toner replenishment automatically; however, the enrollment process was confusing. Superb Enterprise-Grade Printer at a Great Price but Don't Buy Your Toner from Canon

 I am a trained engineer. Having used more than two dozen similar printers in the past, I have extra headaches with this printer. I moved the printer from one room to another; then, I had to troubleshoot the wireless network even though the WIFI signal did not change much. I spent more than 30 minutes to figure out why it went offline and found out the power off has changed the IP address to gibberish

The designer is out of touch of user experience

  Most of my printing is strictly black and white but the color toners deplete at the same rate if not faster than the black even if I use the black and white print setting.  The page life of cartridges is also a joke especially given the price of cartridges. I never get more than 2,000 pages from any cartridge without some degradation of print quality.  I would not recommend this printer

 I also work from home often and use this printer for printouts to provide to clients.  I am just about to junk this printer. Once a toner cartridge reaches 50% life according to the internal meter, the print quality is not acceptable at all. Color streaks or color dots appear on pages

 I installed the software, turned on the printer, added it to my wifi router using the touch screen, got the IP address of my printer on my network, and was able to access it from my computer's browser as well as the printer dialog in the system preferences. It just worked. After unboxing, I was printing and scanning in 10 minutes. The prints and scans look nice on first inspection
