The local Staples has both the Brother MFC-L8900CDW and HP M479fdw all-in-one printers in stock. I want something that is going to be very reliable and long lasting while also having good print and scan quality.

I'm looking at these two models, as well as the Canon MF743Cdw.  The Canon has significantly better reviews on Rtings than the MFC-L3770CDW as far as the quality of color printing.  Of course it is also a higher "tier" of printer with a higher price tag.  

On Rtings, there is a pretty definite "progression" in terms of color image quality as you move farther up the stack - for example the Canon MF644Cdw is obviously worse than the MF743Cdw, and the Brother HL-3270CDW is obviously worse than the MFC-L3770CDW.  However, they don't have a review for the MFC-L8900CDW.

If I go to the Brother MFC-L8900CDW, will I get a step in image quality that brings it reasonably comparable to the Canon MF743Cdw?  Or at least, is the color quality notably better than the L3770CDW?

The prices are:

* Canon MF743CDW - $530
* Brother MFC-L8900CDW - $550

That's pretty much what I've narrowed it down to - I need duplex scanning and if I'm going to shell out that much I'll also take the step to at least entry level color, since it doesn't look like I'll be going back to the office anytime soon.  I don't really have a ton of requirements other than that, although good Linux support would be nice.  I'm familiar with what Brother does there and it's generally fine.  Not interested in HP units.

SO FAR THIS PRINTER IS WORKING GREAT FOR OUR NEEDS. I WORK FOR A SMALL BUSINESS AND WE RECENTLY DOWNSIZED TO THIS PRINTER FROM A BIG COPIER AND WE HAVE NO REGRETS SO FAR. THE ONLY COMPLAINT WE HAVE IS THE SCANNING SPEED, JUST WISH IT WAS A LITTLE BIT FASTER. OTHER THAN THAT WE ARE VERY SATISFIED WITH OUR PURCHASE

GREAT FOR WHAT WE NEEDED

 It had to scan and print duplex. The consumables had to be reasonably priced. Most importantly, it had to support web services like scanning to Google Drive, Dropbox, Box. It had to support cloud printing like Google Cloud Print

 My inkjet-based Epson was no longer cutting it. The ink cartridges were a pain, with nozzles drying up. The world had moved forward, and the Epson couldn’t scan directly to Google Drive. I was doing the USB drive shuffle to move files

Good machine, but has a few problems

 This is a mix of paper stock, with some booklets that I cut in half with a paper cutter, about 30-50 sheets double sided. After separating all of this into individual sheets, of all the varying content, the ADF handles it with aplomb except one item that is made of a very thin front sheet separated from a cardstock thickness back - this single document is not handled by the ADF so I have to take it out and use the flatbed scanner on this (or another scanner). The device really shines here. When scanned to searchable document, it auto rotates individual pages inside the PDF

 This is heavy, it is definitely a two person job to move or install it. Removing the packaging takes 10-15 minutes. From there, connecting to Wifi is very easy from the touchscreen. Connecting to OneDrive for Business uses a computer (one grants the connection from a web browser and then enters a numeric code onto the printer), and from there, it can scan directly to a folder on the OneDrive (or other consumer or business cloud services, SharePoint, etc) with ease

 After complaining to three levels of tech support at Brother and pulling the corporate buyer card – they agreed to replace my drum kit for free.  TONER CARTRIDGES DON’T LAST PRINTER WON’T PRINT UNTIL YOU REPLACE THEM  According to the page counter, this printer has printed about 4700 documents in five months. We manually kept track of the before/after number in between replacing cartridges. We get about 500 black/white printouts from a high yield cartridge before it forces you to replace the toner cartridge

  LIFE OF DRUM WARRANTY KIT REPLACEMENT I now decide to move on & contact Brother regarding the problem since the printer has a 1 year warranty – right? WRONG- the drums are considered a consumable printer part and are NOT covered under the 1 year warranty. The drums only have a 90 day warranty. There are 4 drums in this unit at approx $80.00/each

 The printer literally stops printing until you change the cartridge. When you take the cartridge out, you can tell that it still has a substantial amount of toner left in it. It’s definitely not empty. Don’t quote me on this BUT I think B@RoTHER is currently embroiled in a lawsuit where they are being accused of doing this deliberately to sell more toner

 I asked ETech Express to confirm if this was a brand new item (not refurb) and if that is the case, why would the drum already have scratches on it? $700.00 PIECE OF GARBAGE

 It receives the print jobs over wifi, wakes up, and spits out quality prints faster than anything we have owned in the past.  - Previous printers would randomly lose connection with the network or refuse to scan to certain computers. With the exception of one software update, this printer has never forgotten where it was or declined to cooperate with any of the 7 computers, 2 tables or 2 phones that print to it or receive data from it.  - The cost per page is much lower than with an inkjet

 Too many complaints of odd failures, random issues and wasted ink.  We came across this and noticed the cheaper print cost and the generally higher level of customer satisfaction. I had experience with BROTHER branded printers at work, and we had a few BROTHER label printers, so we decided to splurge and get this more expensive option.  I work from home as does my wife, and 4 of my kids are doing distance learning from home

 Toner last longer, puts out more pages, is less likely to hold you hostage because the magenta is out or some nonsense.  - Not that it matters too much, but it is a good looking machine and doesn't take up much more space than a standard residential printer.  All in all, if you have the extra cash to spend up front, this thing will make it worth your while and may even pay for itself in the long run. We are very glad that we spent the extra money and don't have any complaints about this machine after several months of use, which seems to be very rare these days with modern residential printers

 The toner cartridge are much cleaner solution. And I suspect we'll get many more prints out of a cartridge. The quality of the plastics and controls is noticeably better than the previous HP models we've had.

 We connect to it from our work and personal laptops, iPhones and iPads without a problem. Scanning works very easily and I can easily send out via email. We have ours setup to work via WiFi, which we love - no wires! One minor issue is that it does seem to move into pause mode on rare occasions and I need to hit the wakeup button, but generally it wakes itself just fine for any PC so I think that may be my home WiFi acting up.

Quiet, crisp output and packed with modern features!

 There was an issue with print jobs not starting up because the printer was in idle mode, and something was not seeming to connect. We learned that by adding the printer into our computer system through the printers IP address solved that problem.  Highly recommended purchase, one of our office favorites this year !.
