They say those inks can gum up your printer. I do think that is probably why my printer broke. The generic ink worked fine at first. When the quality went down (remember the quality was never good to begin with) I set the printer to clean the print heads

Toner cartridges for colour laser printers are extremely expensive while ink bottles for tank printers like the Epson Ecotank ET-5800 are extremely inexpensive.

I used the online chat Amazon Tech Support, but he was unable to help me (45 minutes online with this guy - super friendly, but no luck). He instructed me to contact Brother directly, which I did. Brother support - I tried phone and online chat to see which would connect first. Phone won at the 45 minute mark

I've been using this for close to a year to print and scan documents and it works really well for this. The page feeder on top isn't perfect but it's better than all the others I've ever used. With others I've often had trouble where it pulls multiple pages at once and so skips some pages but this one almost never does this. However, if you can get past those initial feelings and give the printer a change, it works really great! I have used all of the features on it except for the fax feature, and they all worked very well. I think my favorite feature is its compact size, as I have gained back so much real estate on my desk! I moved to the Brother from an HP Office Pro 8600 which was a behemoth that took up half of the usable space on my desk top, and had to practically take out a house loan to keep up with the cost of the ink it used! Unless you do professional photography, or graphic art work for a living, this printer will meet all of your personal and normal business needs!

The printer is not small, but not massive. It definitely has some mass to it, and does not feel cheaply built out of the box. Truth be told, I needed another person to help lift it out of the box. It takes up a decent footprint on the desk, but that is also to be expected from a quality machine

I use generic off brand ink cartridges and haven't had any issues with that either. It does seem to go through ink quickly. I use it primarily for printing out shipping labels and documents, all black and white. Like other reviews have mentioned, even when choosing every time to not use color ink, it still devours color ink

The Epson Ecotank ET-8500 is a good choice. It's slightly above your budget but the savings in ink cartridges will more than make up the difference.

It seems like they used to practically give away inkjet printers, then make up the difference by pricing the ink high. However, prices on the printers have recently gone sky high. About a year ago I purchased a higher-end Brother printer for less that this one cost AND the current one was much lower priced than new since it was an open box item.

Up to the purchase of this one, my Epson WF 4740 was my favorite printer (in my classroom) but this one has it beat it's quieter, slightly faster, and ink will be WAY cheaper. Ex: XL cartridges did 900bl/650 color for $50 bl/137 for the 3 color The ET bottles do 7500 bl/6000 color and cost $30 bl/$67 for 3 colors t by the time I buy 3 cartridges each of black and colored XLs for my WF I would save more than the difference in the price of the printer and still have ink in the ET. For me, just in school use, that would be less than a year to have my printer paid for in ink savings.
