I just want to preface this whole unboxing/fit check/review with the caveat that I am a complete raw denim noob. Sure, I've read a hell of a lot about it, and looked at a ton of pictures of people wearing raw and selvedge denim but never bit the bullet myself. In 2020, I started on Goodyear welted shoes in 2020 based on my one friend talking non-stop about about his Allen Edmonds Strand and Dalton collection. I bought a pair of [AEs a while back](https://www.reddit.com/r/goodyearwelt/comments/iet2fd/initial_impressions_allen_edmonds_surrey_cap_toe/) and they have been my best boot to wear in the winter in Alberta. Being from Canada, I wanted to support someone here. Cause I didn't know much I bought a pair of [Hartt Brewer's Boots](https://www.reddit.com/r/goodyearwelt/comments/jg26dk/initial_impressions_hartt_brewers_boots_in_oxblood/).

They aren't terrible but there are better boots for the money. And that's where my [Parkhurst Delaware Boots](https://www.reddit.com/r/goodyearwelt/comments/ju77an/initial_impressions_parkhurst_delaware_boot_in/) in Dark Chocolate Kudu came in. For like CA$515, shipped, I got the best fitting boots I've ever bought, with super quality material like C.F. Stead Kudu uppers. The owner of that company too, Andrew Svisco, is an absolute beauty! He'll fully go out of his way to help you with sizing or anything else, be it via insta DM or email. He gets back in a completely unreasonably fast rate. And really cares about the products he's putting out! If any of you guys are looking for some excellent service boots for the price, I would check them out. They also have one of the most affordable MTO programs out there!

Anyway, I started following [Stitchdown](https://www.stitchdown.com/) and Ben's podcast with [Ticho](https://www.instagram.com/tichoblancoshoes/). Ticho has unreal boot pics every day and the way he cuffed his jeans just looked SO GOOD to me! So I made up my mind that I was gonna get some raw/selvedge denim. Initially I was just gonna wait until I went to Calgary to go try on a bunch of stuff at [Brooklyn Clothing](https://brooklynclothing.com/). They have a pile of different, well known brands and I was going to be there in a month anyway.

**The Purchase**

I started browsing r/rawdenim only from a comment from u/MonsieurLeDude over on GYW. A while back I saw that LSG Denim had stuff on sale. So I started looking at their page. Being in the same province as me, I figured it would be a great idea. I know their jeans have been made in Kathmandu previously and Thailand currently. However, a group of guys close to home, tryna make it sounded pretty damn cool to me. And there is a purpose behind the jeans being made where they're made. I'd urge you to follow up with owner/operator u/thehang to get the full story. Or even send them a DM on insta!

Anyway, on their site, it says to measure up your best fitting jeans and match them up to the sizing on their jeans. I only have stretchy jeans from places like Levi's and some 7 For All Mankind ones my SO bought for me recently. They were the best fitting jeans I have so I took the measuring tape to them. They measured as follows, as best as I can measure:

Waist - 15.5in  
Thigh - 10in  
Front Rise - 10in  
Back Rise - 13in  
Knee - 8in  
Leg Opening - 7in

I like a slimmer fit but still want my jeans to work with the boots I wear so I don't want them TOO tapered. Regardless, I was looking at LSGs slimmest cut, the Brooks. It looked the most similar to my own jeans and the 18oz Indigold was on sale, 30% off. I sent an email asking about sizing and passed on my measurements. u/thehang was super helpful and responded in like 45 minutes! He told me the stretchy jeans I'm measuring obviously arent the best. I asked if a 29 would work but he suggested a 30, especially to be safe. As the jeans don't expand much, if at all, in the thighs. I usually wear a 29 in most jeans (with room in the waist) so I figured 29 might work again. But he suggested a 30. I figured, that they were only $157.50 so, why not just give em a rip.

I ordered the Jeans on Monday, they shipped out the next day and arrived at my condo today, Tuesday. Pretty sweet shipment time! Anyway, they come in a pretty cool, almost pizza style box, which is pretty cool. The little tied, branded, natural leather tag on them is a nice style touch. I've got a natural veg tan wallet and key chain at home so that kinda stuff is always interesting to me.

They came with this little white cotton baggy too. I had no idea what was inside. So I was pleasantly surprised to see this indigo dyed cotton mask. It came with a filter to put in it too! Super impressive from a small brand like these guys. Also inside was a cool little "Thank You" note. 

Onto the jeans though. These jeans definitely have a HELL of a lot more to offer than my past jeans. The gold selvedge stitching, that super tight chain stitch on the hem, THOSE STAMPED BUTTON BACKS AND RIVETS! Literally every river on these jeans is stamped with that crossed knife/machete logo. And, to me, that's pretty freakin awesome!

The little detail comic style photo stamped on the jacron as well as printed on the inside of the pocket, gave me a chuckle for sure!

To my surprise, the jeans are softer to the touch than I expected. Sure, at 18oz they are stiff, but they are, honestly, pretty comfortable feeling, right from the start, not too startchy at all. 

I'd say the color is most well represented in my [fit pics](https://imgur.com/a/9uuPL0G). It's a fairly standard, deep indigo color. The two-tone, golden, and orangey colored stitching is pretty eye catching to me. I know, I shoulda put on my Oxblood belt for the fit pics but I was too excited to match it up better with my 8111s.

Honestly, for me, the fit is really good! It's snug without being tight, all around. Through the waist, through the thigh and especially on the leg opening. The leg opening is absolutely perfect for me. And the length is just what I want to get the kinda cuff that Ticho runs (and I wanted to run!).

They're definitely much more stiff than I'm used to but they are comfortable all around. There is almost no loose fabric in the waist/crotch area and I feel it fits pretty good through my seat and thigh.

I'm like 5'9" and 155-160lbs with more of that weight distributed on my lower half. The 30s in the Brooks fit me super well and I couldn't be much more stoked with my first raw denim purchase.

Dealing with u/thehang could not have been easier. After I got the jeans. I took a bunch of photos and chucked em up on the gram. The two of us chatted for most of the afternoon. And he told me all about the company. The trials and tribulations of finding someone who would make their jeans in quantities they could handle. We talked about service boots, about my photography, about me being a boring accountant, about so much other stuff! From the sizing conversation we had pre purchase to the conversation we had after, I am so happy to support someone like LSG.

**Summary**

I have no idea what constitutes good, bad, mediocre raw denim. What I can say is, the jeans I bought from LSG look really good and feel really good. The interaction I had with them only makes it better.

I don't wanna sound like a shill. I know there are higher end, better quality jeans out there. But at this price, these jeans feel like I stole them. Feel free to disagree with me, as I have a lot to learn. I'm just happy with this purchase.

Thanks for indulging me, everyone. This has been a trip. And the Imperial IPA I had cracked a bit ago is now empty. So I need to fill my glass again!

It has the build of a pair of sturdy jeans that keeps its shape, yet just enough comfort with the stretch. Fits consistently as my other Bonobos jeans and pants.

 I never purchase them full price, I always wait until there is a sale because $120 is just too much for one pair of pants for me.

These Wranglers are the only blue jeans I wear.

 leg length seemed generous and the leg opening at the bottom is more narrow than boot cut but ample to fit over my cowboy boots. I did end up returning these and buying 2 pairs of the Wrangler Cowboy Cut Relaxed fit (31wmz) in Indigo and stonewash. The Relax fit version were exactly what I needed for a good comfortable fit over these Original fit. The bad is the relax fit is not available in as many colors as the Original fit

I really wanted to like these jeans but being a guy that is not slim and having thicker legs and all they fit me far too tight in the leg and seat. I ordered 36x32 and the waist was fine, just a bit more snug as the waist is higher than other Wrangler Jeans like the Retro styles for example. leg length seemed generous and the leg opening at the bottom is more narrow than boot cut but ample to fit over my cowboy boots. I did end up returning these and buying 2 pairs of the Wrangler Cowboy Cut Relaxed fit (31wmz) in Indigo and stonewash

 I really wish Wrangler would offer more in relaxed fit. These are great jeans but if you don't find a regular or slim fit jean to your liking these will likely not be for you either.
