The Blizzard Zero G 105 is the best heavy-ish all-around backcountry ski we have used in recent years. It does everything very well, especially considering its weight. At 1500 grams, there are many lighter options on the market, but the ones we've tested ski more poorly than the Blizzard. Going the other direction, one must tack on a couple hundred grams of mass before matching or exceeding the ski performance of this award winner. 
Weight to performance ratio is the real and definitive measure of an all-around ski for human-powered use. In that matrix, this Blizzard shares the top of the heap. For a long time, we have picked two highest award winners; one super light and the other "normal" light. The Zero G 105 is the "normal light" award winner. The primary compromise in its performance is in firm snow. It doesn't grip quite as smoothly or confidently as we would like in an all-around ski. It does well enough, but this is the drawback we have to comment on.

 Super handy, nice little design for the skin so I highly recommend those. With the Zero Gs they do have of course a nice early rise in the tips. We've got some generous camber, moderate camber underfoot and in the tail we've got a slight up rise as well. So these are the Zero G 105s, I'm 180 pounds, I ski on the 188, 6 foot tall, 6 foot 1

 I've been skiing the 105s for two seasons now. I got a pre-production model and tested them for a year and then wrote the review and I've been skiing on them all this year as well. So the new thing with the Zero G skis is the carbon drive 2.0 construction

 So great and variable snow conditions. The Zero Gs also use a rounded 3D top edge design. So you can see that on the top edge here and that reportedly reduces the ski weight by about 15%. There is also a skin notch in the tip and also in the tail of the ski as you can see and you can buy pre-cut mocha skins

 We've got some generous camber, moderate camber underfoot and in the tail we've got a slight up rise as well. So these are the Zero G 105s, I'm 180 pounds, I ski on the 188, 6 foot tall, 6 foot 1. The 180 was a little small so I do find the 188 to be an ideal size for me. They do come in a 164, 172, 180 and 188 centimeter lengths

The Volkl Yumi 84 is a great frontside all-mountain ski for lightweight skiers, or skiers with a more conservative ski style. Built with a similar profile to its bigger sister, the Kenja 88, this ski features Volkl’s Frame Construction, but instead of a Titanal frame, this one receives a Fiberglass frame. This helps bring the weight of the ski down while still providing good torsional stiffness for solid edge hold and overall stability. The glass frame also gives the ski a very snappy and energetic feel. Running through the center of the ski is a Titanal band for added vibration and stability. At 84 millimeters under the boot, the Yumi 84 provides great performance on trial, but it allows for plenty of versatility to get off the groomers and into the bumps and trees. In fact, thanks to how light the ski is, it is impeccably maneuverable in technical terrain and sure makes a great bump ski. The Yumi 84 also features a fairly elongated rocker profile which really adds to its overall user friendliness and versatility. Not only does this rocker help provide a little bit of float when things get soft, but it allows the ski to pivot very easily for effortless short radius turns. The Yumi 84 is ultimately a very approachable ski that offers a lot of value in a well-balanced package. Low end intermediates to advanced skier that might not prefer top-end speeds would really enjoy the quickness and energy of the Volkl Yumi 84.

 Under the foot they use a teat mill band right there just for binding retention which also helps with that stability right when you're on edge underneath the foot. Shape of the ski they have a great all-mountain shape. They use their 3D radius which basically means that wherever you're flexing this ski on edge it's going to hold that edge so if you like to make larger turns it's going to have a longer effective edge or if you like to make slalom turns it's going to have that shorter effective edge and be a smooth ride. They also have tip and tail rise a little just slightly in there and basically because it's an all mountain it's a little bit more of the front side when we're talking about an 84 under waist but that tip and tail rise is going to help you get into the turn a little bit easier and fight through the crud when the snow is being pushed around later in the day

 Without the metal in the ski it's definitely a little bit more approachable than the Kendra in the Secret so it's going to be geared towards a high intermediate skier someone who knows how to link their turns or maybe even an intermediate that's getting a little bit better and wants something that's precise and stable underneath their feet but is still going to be light and not as fatiguing throughout the day as something that's a little bit more powerful like the Kendra. I would take it mainly in the resort at 84. You're still going to be able to have fun in the woods and the bumps with the lightweight construction but it's definitely not meant for the powder. It's narrow under the waist but it's going to be a great ski to link your turns and really get to be a better skier on the mountain

 I've talked about it beginner to advanced but where are you going to take this ski? It's mainly a resort ski but what's great about the that 3D radius is that you can take it into the woods if you want a little off piste. It's got nice tip and tail rocker that if you get into the crud a little bit of powder you're going to get that little float right over that powder and be able to manage it and especially if you get a shorter length for you that woods and those bumps are going to be so much fun you're going to really feel the energy that comes out of the ski.  But it also helps when you're getting into your turn, the turn initiation and that feel of getting into the turn. If you hit a little bit of crud it's going to bounce right over that and you're not going to feel it under your legs. Pretty lightweight ski for an all mountain ski. You know at the 161 length it comes in at 1400 grams

 And that's at the 161 length. It's going to be great if you are someone that likes to pop in the woods and make quick turns or once in a while make those large arcing turns because you've got a wide open blue to take a cruise on. This ski is going to do it. It really does

 Without the metal in there it's going to be a little lighter weight and it's going to be a little bit more flexible, allowing that intermediate skier to get on edge and actually make a carving turn. I think it's a great ski that can take you from being a beginner intermediate to an advanced skier. It's a great ski to learn how to carve on. Speaking of carving, it uses the 3D radius technology that they have in most of Volkl's lineup and what that means is that under the foot there's a tighter turn radius and out towards the edges

 It's forgiving under your legs. You can go all day. You're going to be able to turn easily. As I said those wide tips are going to get you through out of trouble and that little tail rise is going to get you out of all the other trouble on the back end

 It does have a little bit more tail rise than some of them which I really like because it gets you out of tight sticky situations and a nice tip rise you know fat tip on this ski which is really going to get you through the crud or any trouble that you get into in the beginning of your turn. It's got their 3D sidecut technology which means that it's got three different radiuses throughout the ski. The tip and the tail have a larger radius and under the foot has a smaller radius. That means when you really flex on the ski in the center of your turn you're going to be able to get snappy peppy turns and then you're going to be able to extend those turns to the tips and the tails
