The Blizzard Zero G 105 is the best heavy-ish all-around backcountry ski we have used in recent years. It does everything very well, especially considering its weight. At 1500 grams, there are many lighter options on the market, but the ones we've tested ski more poorly than the Blizzard. Going the other direction, one must tack on a couple hundred grams of mass before matching or exceeding the ski performance of this award winner. 
Weight to performance ratio is the real and definitive measure of an all-around ski for human-powered use. In that matrix, this Blizzard shares the top of the heap. For a long time, we have picked two highest award winners; one super light and the other "normal" light. The Zero G 105 is the "normal light" award winner. The primary compromise in its performance is in firm snow. It doesn't grip quite as smoothly or confidently as we would like in an all-around ski. It does well enough, but this is the drawback we have to comment on.

 Super handy, nice little design for the skin so I highly recommend those. With the Zero Gs they do have of course a nice early rise in the tips. We've got some generous camber, moderate camber underfoot and in the tail we've got a slight up rise as well. So these are the Zero G 105s, I'm 180 pounds, I ski on the 188, 6 foot tall, 6 foot 1

 I've been skiing the 105s for two seasons now. I got a pre-production model and tested them for a year and then wrote the review and I've been skiing on them all this year as well. So the new thing with the Zero G skis is the carbon drive 2.0 construction

 So great and variable snow conditions. The Zero Gs also use a rounded 3D top edge design. So you can see that on the top edge here and that reportedly reduces the ski weight by about 15%. There is also a skin notch in the tip and also in the tail of the ski as you can see and you can buy pre-cut mocha skins

 We've got some generous camber, moderate camber underfoot and in the tail we've got a slight up rise as well. So these are the Zero G 105s, I'm 180 pounds, I ski on the 188, 6 foot tall, 6 foot 1. The 180 was a little small so I do find the 188 to be an ideal size for me. They do come in a 164, 172, 180 and 188 centimeter lengths

 They've also added a rubber suspension into the tips and the tails and what that does is it really reduces vibrations but it also helps you with your swing weight get into that turn and get out of that turn if you're in a tricky situation, tight trees or some powder. It's also going to allow the tips to kind of rise up when you are in that powder and give you that flotation that you want from a 106 waist width. Just like all the other Volkl skis it has a 3D radius and what I really love about 3D radius is it whatever style of skiing you are the ski can do so if you like to make your tiny little turns this is going to be able to hold an edge at that tiny turn sharp quick turns or if you like to make really long GS arcing turns it also has that radius. Just to read you a little fact so right on the the center of this ski the 3D radius is about 14 meters and the tips and tails is 23 and 29

 It can still be used as an all one quiver ski but it is a little bit wider so it's going to be a little bit more demanding than some of the narrow widths in the Blaze lineup. The Blaze series came out from Volkl a couple years ago and what's unique about it is they took out their metal laminate that they use in their secret Kenja lineup and they've taken and put a hybrid wood core and what that means is they use different densities, woods and materials inside that core that make it super responsive, energetic and it still keeps it a stiff flex for when you really want to power into your turns. They've also added a rubber suspension into the tips and the tails and what that does is it really reduces vibrations but it also helps you with your swing weight get into that turn and get out of that turn if you're in a tricky situation, tight trees or some powder. It's also going to allow the tips to kind of rise up when you are in that powder and give you that flotation that you want from a 106 waist width

 So again you're going to be able to make those quick edge to edge turns as well as those arcing turns on there. When we look at the shape of the ski it's got a nice tip and tail rocker that allows you that again that easy turn initiation can get you out of some funky tight situations in the trees and really gives that flotation when you hit that powder. It's got a titanal band underneath the foot that helps with your binding retention but it also helps with stiffen the ski give you that torsional stiffness when you're really flexing the ski empowering that ski that's going to help you stay on edge whenever you hit some harder snow. At a 165 you know still super light for a 106 weight let's see how much it weighs

 Basically what that's gonna do is help you get on edge and maneuver easier through tricky situations, but you're also going to be able to flex the ski on edge and hold it if you like to make larger turns. Their 3D radius technology is pretty awesome. It basically allows you to make slalom turns to giant slalom turns to super duty turns depending on how you flex the ski and how you power the ski. So if you like to be able to go just about anywhere on the mountain, this would be a great option

 What that does is that reducing the weight even more, but holding that torsional stiffness that you'll need to have a smoother ride. Shape of the ski, they have a nice long tip rocker, pretty long for this kind of category and nice tail rocker combined with their 3D radius. Basically what that's gonna do is help you get on edge and maneuver easier through tricky situations, but you're also going to be able to flex the ski on edge and hold it if you like to make larger turns. Their 3D radius technology is pretty awesome

 With the 106 under waist it's definitely geared towards someone who knows what they're doing, someone who wants a little bit more flotation and powder, but it can also be used as a touring ski. Since it's so light in its construction without any metal in there, you're gonna be able to take it uphill and not get as fatigued, but you're also gonna be able to get that flotation when you hit the powder going downhill. They do have a narrower version for someone that just is purely looking for resort uphill, but this would be a great ski for someone that kind of likes to do it all, who wants that ski for the powder days at the resort or out of bounds or just touring any day and anywhere.  At 106 underfoot, you're definitely going to get some flotation, not in the deepest of snow, but definitely that rocker helps out a lot. The lightweight goes a long way too, we're dealing with the hybrid multi-layer wood core from Volkl, and that's pretty lightweight stuff. And to get it more stable, they've added this metal plate to the center portion of the ski, so it doesn't only function as a mounting zone, but also is a structural metal plate as well. So underfoot, this thing's going to be pretty solid, definitely helps out on firmer snow

This whole Blaze series is new for Volkl, and the 106 is the widest one, best suited for soft snow at this width, and we're dealing with some new shaping here.  Whether it's resort or backcountry, this ski is light enough to be able to tour on, so if you're going to put a shift binding on there, or kingpin or one of these kind of in-the-middle touring downhill bindings, that's going to be a good setup for a lot of skiers.  So the tips and the tails have a larger radius so when you're not in the groomers and you're not trying to get hard turns, you're going to be able to create larger radius turns throughout your skiing. And then when you do flex on edge, right under the foot, you're going to be able to get on edge and you're going to have a much quicker, faster turn with that shorter radius. Blaze 106, when we're talking about where to take this, you can take it just about anywhere. It's really made for the backcountry

 So you can put their new Duke PT on it, which is similar to the Salomon Shift. You could put a kingpin on it or you could just put a normal binding on it and take it into the resort. As I said, it's really going to go just about anywhere you want to go, powder day and resort bounds, backcountry, trees, moguls, groom trails. The flex pattern of this ski is definitely going to be able to hold an edge when you get on those groomers and you're still going to be able to have fun

 It's super lightweight. It's really what they were going for when they were going for this ski but they were also going for a performance ski as well as a light ski.  They've got a binding reinforcement metal plate under where your binding would be to keep it stiff and help keep those bindings screwed into the ski when you're out in the backcountry. When we look at the shape of this ski, you see it's got a little bit of tip, early tip rise and a little bit of tail. Not much camber underfoot but there definitely is a little bit of flex under there to get into the carve of the turn. That shape is going to help float over all the crud that you see out there
