 The past two winters, I occasionally skied with the Black Diamond JetForce Halo 28 airbag. The pack is well built, and carries well, but it is too heavy for everyday use. I would often switch back to my favorite ski rucksack of all time — BDs Cirque 45 for longer tours. Guessing when to sport an airbag, and when not to, is fine if you are a combination of Bruce Tremper and the Buddha

 Probe, shovel pieces, and snow saw fit in the tools compartment. Inside the top portion of that cavity is a zippered pocket that holds miscellaneous small items. The Halo had a clever white colored zipper pull on the avy tool closure to distinguish it from the main compartment. I have grabbed the wrong zipper many a time on the Tour 26 — white acrylic paint will remedy that

This fall, Black Diamond received their eleventh-hour license to use the Alpride E1 system, making the JetForce Tour 26 about 2 lbs lighter than the Halo 28. I opted for the BD over the Scott version of the E1 due to easier main-cavity access, padded hip belts, and longtime personal success with the BD pack line. 

 It lacks back panel reinforcement and has a tight 20L capacity. My more weight conscious friends run this configuration and while impressively light, I have seen them struggle with jamming more than a basic amount of gear into the pack.)

 The padded belt sections rest nicely on my boney hips and the belt cinches up well, clasping together with a small aluminum climbing-harness style buckle. The Black Diamond JetForce UL  is impressively light. At 4 lbs 6 oz, this pack is significantly lighter &#40;1-3 lbs&#41; than nearly all other airbags on the market at a similar volume. It features Alpride's 2.0 airbag system, which is unquestionably the lightest on the market. It's a stripped-down pack that is light on features, but we appreciate the helmet carry system and the small mesh internal pocket included for organization.
The JetForce UL makes some sacrifices to functionality and comfort to achieve its low weight. Its waist belt is basically a thin piece of nylon, and there is no real back support aside from the bit of rigidity created by the airbag system. The internal avalanche tool sleeve is difficult to access when the pack is full — which it will be, due to the small volume. The pack feels quite small for the 26L of claimed volume, and is just barely big enough for most day tours. However, after extensive testing, we didn't find most of these sacrifices to be deal-breakers. For folks who hesitate to bring an airbag due to weight, or anyone seeking the lightest still-functional airbag pack, this is it.

Now, many might suggest that this deployment system is passe, a dead end in avy air bag evolution. Given the five to ten year operational life of an airbag pack and wide adoption of the twin cartridge system, I doubt that will be a problem.  One minor niggle is that two of the zippers have identical black webbing pulls and the third has gray webbing; one would think that the designers would have specified a third color/shade so that each pull had it's only color scheme, but this is easy to rectify.

 It has a bunch of features and they're all hidden right, so it's very streamlined. It'S not going to get caught in branches up here. If you guys haven't tried it a little bit of trail mix and my goggles and i still had more room if i wanted to put more stuff in there, but that's just a brief little showcase of what you can find in there. Then we have the main compartment, which is this one right here see if i can show you guys, so the main compartment is right here, i'm gon na open it all the way. So what you're gon na see is first, we have this interior pocket here

 Here we have another little pocket right, pull that out. This is our ski carry, so this pack does a diagonal ski carry, so we have our bottom strap here and our top strap. We have a zipper right here, pull this bad boy out, and so this is our top strap, and this is our bottom strap right here, both of them tuck away so nothing's hanging nothing's loose.  It has a actual helmet carry built in, stowable, which for me, that's one of my kind of deal breakers. I don't know if it's my old age, or just the fact that I like things that are, you know, that work together, but I like being able to strap my helmet on in a way that it's not dangling and flopping, and when I'm done, it can store and looks all clean. It has an ice axe loop. It has a diagonal ski carry

 That, again, is a trade-off. Again, it's how they save weight. Instead of having a dedicated exterior pocket, there's a sleeve. It does have a probe and shovel handle holes

 You just have to open the backpack and see what you can fit in it, because 26 liters doesn't really mean much, and you're always wondering, like, are they counting the helmet carry in that 26 liters? Are they counting, you know, some extra mesh pocket? And I've had 30 liter bags that I can't fit as much as, you know, this bag. This has just one main compartment, and the snow tools, avalanche tools compartment is inside that. That, again, is a trade-off. Again, it's how they save weight

 We are going to talk about one of the staples in our mediocre quiver of backcountry skiing equipment, and that would be the Black Diamond Jet Force UL 26 Avalanche Airbag Backpack. And this is a great backpack, number one and first and foremost, and the only reason that we use it so much is that it is light. I have yet to find really anything that in real world, I mean you can nerd out on all the specs online on so many Avi backpacks, but real world, the entire backpack, and the airbag, and the cartridges, weight wise, I haven't found anything lighter that you can actually use to ski tour. There are some that are lighter, but you cannot fit anything in them
