Switchback Travel

Traditional daypacks like the Talon and Stratos above are great for moderate day hikes, but Black Diamond’s running-inspired Distance 15 is purpose-built for mountain athletes focused on traveling fast and light. The hybrid pack/vest design checks in at a scant 13.9 ounces but easily accommodates a day’s worth of supplies (it can even fit a streamlined climbing helmet). The storage layout is another highlight: The four zippered chest pockets, trekking pole sleeves, ice axe holders, side compression straps, and dual front stretch pockets allow you to conveniently access the essentials without removing the pack. Along with the body-hugging shape, the Distance makes it easy to move quickly and efficiently over rougher, varied terrain.

To be clear, however, the Black Diamond Distance isn’t for everyone. The pack is reasonably durable with a mix of 100- and 200-denier fabrics, but you'll need to be careful around sharp rock and equipment and avoid overpacking (we had a shoulder strap detach almost entirely after adding too much weight). We’ve also found it rides a bit low on our back and can feel heavy at the end of a long day, and the lack of hipbelt only exacerbates the issue. The Distance does come in a nice range of sizes from extra small to large, and the straps allow you to adjust the fit at the sides and front, but we still recommend trying it on before buying (the unisex sizing might be problematic for some women). Black Diamond’s Distance series entered the mountain running world with a bang, covering everything from ultralight shelters to wind jackets, trekking poles, and more. The Distance 15 is their popular running pack, which brings alpine-ready features to a lightweight vest design. Along with a nice array of front pockets and a close fit that rides high on the torso, you get burly fabrics and technical extras like ice tool attachments, trekking pole stash pockets, and a cavernous rear compartment that can even accommodate a minimalist climbing helmet. Further, keep in mind that the Distance 15 does not come with included hydration, and it’s already one of the pricier vests here at $150. And sans shirt, we’ve found that it does chafe a bit more on our middle back than the ADV Skin due to the slight bit of added bounce. But you can do this by making sure whatever vest or pack you get has certain features that you want: large dedicated phone pockets, some "extra" capacity at a minimal weight gain, etc. I used a Black Diamond Distance 15 vest when I was run commuting, and also for most of my long runs because the compression works well at closing up the pack if I'm using only a bladder in the back.

Wondering if anyone has advice for running pack. I’ve got an Orange Mud small pack for my basic runs, up to marathon distance, and love it. Good pockets, no chafing, holds front bottles and rear reservoir. But the storage sack part is tiny (on purpose) and there are days I want to run commute 6 miles to and 6 miles back. I basically need to take a change of clothes and maybe shoes. Not a ton, but enough to make the current pack insufficient. I’d also like to use this on future ultras, maybe 50k or 50m races as I build up to them over next few years. 

I’ve initially looked at some Salomon, orange mud, and Nathan packs. Not sure how much storage to get, or how to tell if the main sock is enough. 5L sizing? 8L?

Running pack for run-commute

 I'm a 39 to 40 size chest and pretty much I always wear medium and these straps got flex which is important. I love it when you have stretchy straps for breathing sake. I feel like it really helps you expand. This one's not stretchy, but it's stretchy there

 Additionally, there is a place for a bladder if you're a bladder fan. And then there's also a tiny little zipper compartment for keys, cash, passports, whatever. This is a medium and it fits. Really fits me really well

I'm 5'6 and 135 with not much of a chest. I got the XS and it's perfect! Room to cinch or uncinch. I have a competitors womens vest and had the trail vest/pack they do. The issues I had with the trail vest were solved by this bag completely (and by my dog chewing the zip so I had to replace it)and I feel like the fit is more comfortable than the race vest!

 We chose the osprey larger capacity bag that fit closer to the back and it was perfect, still fit as a carry on.

This is probably a great pack for hiking - not so great for airplane travel due to the fact that the pack protrudes so much from the backpack piece. There is an arch mesh where there is just a ton of wasted space. I'm sure that the function is for more support, but it just wasn't the right fit for us. I wasn't sure if it would fit in the overhead bins because of the arch

 you just have to unclip here and there is/\s/a zipper at the front that you can zip a smaller/\s/ backpack into. so start with the smaller backpack/\s/one really great thing about this is that it is/\s/ so compact I use it around town all the time even/\s/when I'm not traveling, it fits really well I have/\s/ a 1 liter Nalgene that I always carry with me it/\s/fits perfectly in here. They also have front water/\s/ bottle holders I don't finally spit my 1 liter/\s/Nalgene so I normally just put garbage or things I/\s/ need easy access to anything that keeps me quickly/\s/in and out. There's also this small pocket at the/\s/ front here and it fits quite a lot of things

 there. again/\s/is two little buckles that easily snap in so hands-free your backpack is just hanging out/\s/it's very comfortable. One thing is is that it/\s/ does like bounce a little bit so it does kind of/\s/do that. but again I found this was the best part/\s/ of it

Pill in here/\s/right now so when you open it up, it's pretty roomy/\s/ there is a laptop spot in the back and so when/\s/I was traveling in Southeast Asia in Australia/\s/ I had my MacBook Air which is a 13-inch laptop and/\s/it fit perfectly here. I Also was carrying my Kobo/\s/ which I put in this front pocket is before that/\s/and it is padded is padded on the backside more/\s/ so than the front, but I never had any issues with/\s/that at all. It fits quite a lot of things

 high up in the Andes, there's a lot of varied climates means you need more stuff, you know, different kinds of clothes and gear and 40 is just a little bit too small for that. Also, if you're just looking for a backpack that's great for like, camping and travel and hiking, I think it also really works. It costs a little bit more than the standard far point, but if I wanted to invest in a backpack, especially in a backpack, that has a very high comfort level, uh, then I think this is a very worthy investment. All right, I think that sums it up

 Uh, it's quite a chunker. As you can see, I normally travel with maybe a 40 liter backpack. I like to travel light, but that's when I'm staying only in accommodation and not doing any trekking or not doing any camping or whatever. This is more of an adventure pack, clearly because it is a little bit bigger, uh, than your average like carry-on sized bag, but it's still still, um, pretty manageable at 4 55 liters when you open it and you can open it along the side

 but for most of the hikes I was like just walking around and and the weight was equally distributed along my body which made it easy to carry and I was really impressed with that. So if you want that extra comfort and you're maybe a bit worried if you're gonna walk for longer distances with your backpack that you're gonna get sore shoulders or whatever. and this is a really nice upgrade from the default, uh, farpoint. So in conclusion, uh, when I think of this backpack, I think about what scenarios
