 Lots of other equipment that I might be testing and I needed a larger pack and this is built with 500 denier PU coated ripstop nylon. So this thing is heavy duty and the 28 liter size. Those two things stood out from the crowd for me and that it comes in at 18 ounces in its stuffable pack which is our back which is awesome so that it's coming in just over a pound. it's going to be 28 liters and it's out of a more tough, durable material using YKK zippers, heavy duty plastic clips

 We were looking for that ultra light but larger and heavy-duty stuffable deep so did just have an absolute blast trekking with this thing and it was noticeable the amount of gear that I could carry and how it carried that weight Well, it wasn't sagging. If you're used to these type of bags, you know that they don't have a lot of structure so they don't tend to carry weight very well. It can tend to dig into your back if you have certain items in the bag. It wasn't digging into my back and just really was a really enjoyable experience on our day hike up to that twelve thousand three hundred foot peak

 They do a lot of good stuff. they do exactly what they say they can do. The two downfalls for me has always been size and durability. Most of those compacts stuffable

 For the time being though, when I am looking for this type of bag, you know that's collapsible frameless. I Don't really have anything else and I haven't seen anything else. that's why I got my hands on it. That can do what this bag can do, giving me the size, the durability and the comfortable ride and be able to carry the amount of gear that I need as a videographer

You Can Stuff A 28L Pack! Matador Beast

 We actually have zippered mesh pockets, which you can use to store additional gear. So maybe in these pockets you could store nutrition, snacks, smaller accessories. If you're carrying a camera on this trail, you might store some sd cards or maybe a small battery in them just good pockets there for you to store additional gear. The hip belt buckle, utilizes a ykk buckle and we've also got elastic webbing to manage strap slack again, as mentioned

 Okay, so let's take a look inside the compartments of the bag. We'Ve got two main external compartments on this bag. One compartment that takes this front area and then we've got our main compartment. So the one on the front here has this u-shaped zipper, ykk u-shaped zipper, and it takes all of this dimension on the top here, so you could pack any performance apparel in there

 So if you are carrying trekking poles or ice axes, you can loop them through there and then loop them through here, cinch them down so they're nice and secure nice and stable on your pack on the sides of the bag. We have water bottle, pockets, stretchy water bottle pockets that are mesh as well, so you can actually see inside there at the moment, they're quite flush against the bag, but they have an elastic cuff here at the top, which allows them to stretch out to store gear. Inside so here i have a vacuum: insulated 20 ounce stanley water bottle fits in there perfectly fine, but it'll also stretch out to fit a 32 ounce nargine water bottle also on both sides of the bag. You have a compression strap which you can compress the bag down if you're carrying light, but if you have taller items inside the bag, you can also use this to secure and stabilize the gear inside these water bottle pockets

 This uses a ykk, sternum strap, and here you can see there are six points of adjustment here for the sternum strap, so you can properly align the sternum strap to where your sternum is when you're carrying the bag on the sternum strap. We have a little bit of elastic webbing just to manage that strap slack and then further below. We have woo jean ladder, locks and again elastic webbing to manage the strap slack on the back panel. We have that same eva perforated, padding here so it'll provide a nice comfortable and breathable back panel and will do well to prevent that sweaty back that you often get on longer trails

Ultralight, Durable, Packable - The Matador Beast 28 Ultralight Technical Backpack

I really like how much this backpack flexes with me when I'm climbing. It's not meant to carry a lot of weight but even when it's mostly full it's not rigid. Also took it with me to Mexico as a daypack and it's definitely not very water resistant and I found it could use maybe one more pocket or just a larger zipper pocket for my phone and wallet. Overall great lightweight backpack that I'll only take when I need to conserve weight

Surprisingly flexible

 If it's wintertime and you need to stuff one or two thicker layers inside, this pack will also handle that, and it has two main compartments so you can put some food and gear such as microspikes in the second compartment. The main compartment closest to your back has a water reservoir compartment, as well as a smaller side zippered compartment for small snacks or keys. The second compartment is slightly smaller but goes most of the way down the depth of the pack, good for snacks and smaller gear. The outside of the pack has a series of hoops on both sides, which can be used to clip hats/dog water bowls/other gear

The hip strap is removable, and also contains a small mesh pocket on each side (2 total) which I use for chapstick and a small snack. It's comfortable when strapped and clipped across your hip.

I have used this pack for several hikes so far and it's been a perfect size for day hikes. This pack does not sag when it is not full, so if it's summertime and you're maybe only carrying a light layer + water + snacks, this pack will still fit well. If it's wintertime and you need to stuff one or two thicker layers inside, this pack will also handle that, and it has two main compartments so you can put some food and gear such as microspikes in the second compartment. The main compartment closest to your back has a water reservoir compartment, as well as a smaller side zippered compartment for small snacks or keys

Lightweight and versatile pack

One really nice feature is the main zipper. Its a 3/4 zipper. On the left side of the bag it opens halfway but on the right, it originates almost at the bottom. Allowing you to access deeper gear quicker

The waist strap is quite comfortable but as a larger fella I would prefer a longer stretch of padding on it. The waist band and back of the pack have a nice honeycomb to keep you cool. I have not been able to test that quality as It is winter.

 I use this pack for both pack rafting and general backpacking for a couple years before finally deciding that some combination of the shoulder straps attaching right at the top of my shoulders, the thinness of the strap padding, the binding on the edge of the straps, or possibly the space between the straps being a little bit too narrow to accommodate my neck, left my neck sore after pretty much every trip, and so I decided to search for something that would be more comfortable for carrying heavy loads specifically for pack crafting. What I landed on was the Seek outside divide 4500. it can be configured a bunch of different ways, but mine was, or mine has typically been right around 57 ounces with a bunch of straps and one hip belt pocket attached with frame extensions. The frame is 26 inches, which is pretty tall, but because the hip belt attaches a little bit up from the very bottom, it's effectively not quite a 26 inch frame

 It's more comfortable than the hyper light mountain gear packs or the flight one, or the Hanker marl. It's as comfortable as the Divide and a pound lighter. It checks all of those boxes. It is light, durable, versatile, and can carry loads comfortably

 Then in 2019 I was going to do a sort of longer desert trip where I needed to stay light, but then it would include some water halls and I wanted something as comfortable as the Divide but lighter. I still had the large Hyper Light Mountain Gear Porter 4400 at the time, but remembering those problems with the fit of the pack and the neck pain it caused, I came to believe that for comfort it would be necessary for shoulder straps to wrap around the shoulder. This would generally solve the problems that the large Hmg had. The thing is, though, when you go this route, it's pretty much necessary to have load lifters

 Once I get a production model of the Big Wild, I'll do a more in-depth review of that. So I guess the main point is it does everything that I wanted all of the other packs to do. It's more comfortable than the hyper light mountain gear packs or the flight one, or the Hanker marl. It's as comfortable as the Divide and a pound lighter

Searching for a Pack that is Light, Durable, Versatile, and Comfortable

I'd add the Seek Outside Divide; not ultralight despite the name but if you are carrying a heavy load it merits consideration.

I'm in the market for a new winter pack. I'm currently using a ULA Circuit that I really need to replace. I've had it for almost 10 years and I don't know how many miles (AT thru hike in 2012  plus a lot of other hiking since then). Although it's a very good pack, I wish it was a little bit bigger. So, I was thinking about a ULA catalyst and then I started to research the rest of the field.

The "Rules": Mainly going by the list of pack makers in the FAQ/wiki on this sub. I went to each pack maker and tried to find their biggest packs or the packs closest to 75 liters. Please gently tell me if you think I should have picked a better pack for the manufacturer. Please also tell me if you have an idea for which Seek Outside and KS ultralight packs you think I should include. I want to only have one pack per maker in the spreadsheet.

In the spreadsheet there are three sheets.

The first is listing the packs according to cost divided by liters. Sierra Designs was the clear winner here with the only pack that cost below $3/liter of space. Six Moon Designs, Osprey and ULA all had packs below $4/liter. MLD, Gossamer Gear, Granite Gear, Zimmerbuilt and Zpacks rounded out the midfield costing between $4 and $5 per liter of space. While Superior Wilderness Designs, Waymark and Hyperlight all cost over $5/liter. This is an important measure for me because I don't expect to do a ton of winter camping so I'm attracted to a more cost effective solution.

Of course, this is r/ultralight so I'm not gonna forget about those precious grams. Enter sheet two. In this sheet, the volume of each pack is divided by the weight, to find out which packs are most efficient at providing space. The Zimmerbuilt BigStep was the clear winner providing an incredible 125 liters per kilogram of pack weight. (as an aside because this was originially a quest to find a 75 liter pack, the 48 liter capacity of the BigStep is somewhat apples to oranges because most of the other packs, except for the second place MLD and 4th place Mariposa have frames). Zpacks was the winner of framed packs. The value pick Sierra Designs was more in the middle of the pack for this metric.

In the third spreadsheet I attempted to create a "Total Rating". I added the (Average cost/pack cost) to (Pack volume/average volume). Theoretically the higher the volume the better. According to this logic the frameless Zimmerbuilt and MLD packs are the clear winners, scoring 2.8 and 2.7 (the average score was 2.0). Sierra Designs and Zpacks are both above average according to this metric. The Zpacks very strong 96L/kg value helped it overcome it's $300 price tag.

Note: the Six Moon Designs Pack is currently on sale for $127. Using that sale price raises it's total score by an entire point from 1.9 to 2.9, good enough for first place.

Please let me know if you think I messed anything up or if I should add some additional packs (like KS and Seek Outside), and if you think I should use a different pack from a particular maker.

Overview of Larger Capacity/Winter Backpacks SPREADSHEET MADNESS--help expand it!

 These are I think what they call the bachelor buckles I think now they haven't been plastic. these are the ones that are metal. They are a little bit heavy. You know they don't bother me

 You know when I first put this on this is it. just sort of dug in them inside of my skin so you know I was just something else for sneak outside. It's maybe to round those shoulder straps the bottom shoulder straps out to kind of finish them off nicely. same thing with these hip belts I don't know if you can see that, but the hip belt is just sort of ends right here with this piece of ribbon

Hey folks, want to do a quick review on this pack? This is the see Outside Divided 4500 I've had this pack for about a year now I'm headed out on three trips I've got this pack because of one of the big load hauler when it's something that was going to be able to handle 30, 40, even 50 pounds. something that was gonna be a serious durable multi-day pack. so that's why I chose this one. I'm gonna go through a couple of the features, the benefits, the pros and the cons

Yeah, like I said I'd radios can be a B-plus but a couple more trips here and further play with the adjustments and see how it goes
