 What happens when you use a good set of cans? I tried the Dragonfly with my new Beyerdynamic T1 2nd gen headphones. The first thing you will notice is that the Dragonfly cannot adequately power 600 ohm cans. Nope. Not at all

 I have a few MP3s, but most of my music was ripped at 48/16 resolution. I do have about two dozen albums ripped from SACD at higher 94/24 resolution so my source material is a good mix. The crappier the source material, the more pronounced the improvement will be with the Dragonfly. MP3s can sound pretty decent

 If the Apple dongle had more output, you really would be hard pressed to hear a difference. It’s there, but it’s negligible and definitely not a $200 difference.  This was my finding based on the good, but not stellar Sony MDR-1A headphones. These are a nice, efficient set of cans with bloated bass, but beautiful midrange and good highs

 That’s the key. The dongle can drive efficient headphones with nearly the same quality, but it lacks the amplification of the Dragonfly. If the Apple dongle had more output, you really would be hard pressed to hear a difference. It’s there, but it’s negligible and definitely not a $200 difference

My final and definitive review of the Dragonfly Red!

 I recently replaced the aforementioned $2000 rig with a $200 one and you know what? I'm much happier with it. I'm listening to music again rather than scrutinizing sound. Moral of the story? The best audio gear is whatever gets out of the way and lets you enjoy the music. The worst audio gear is the stuff that becomes an obsession in its own right and leaves you listening for flaws in your gear and missing the music entirely

 Yet I still think it's worthwhile to invest in an external DAC like this. The main reason to buy one is that nearly all USB DACs also have low-distortion (albeit low-power) amps built in, and it's well documented that simply raising the volume (within reason) will sound better to many people. You get MUCH cleaner volume gain through even a cheap DAC than through your headphone output. Likewise, your computer's headphone jack tends to be pretty noisy, and moving the audio circuitry away from the main logic board delivers audible benefits in the form of reduced circuit noise

 So sound quality was a tie, but in basic functionality the Red lost out to a clone of an older version of its cheaper sibling. Not a very impressive showing for $200.  As is true of so much audio gear, what's measurable is rarely what's audible, and while I can accept that the components in the Red might measure better than those in the Black (or its clones), I don't accept that those differences justify doubling the price. For what it's worth, I bought a USB DAC on eBay with a squeaky-clean headphone jack and an ES9018K2M chip (better than what's in the DragonFly Red) for under $30

I started off using the Bluetooth connection, but then thought it could only get better if I got some high-quality cables. So I started with blue Jean RCA plugged into the dragonfly red. Even though the speakers have a DAC already, I was curious what the combination would be like. Here again the dragonfly really made everything much more sensuous

My new mini listening station until my house gets built. Asgard2, Bluesound node2i, Dragonfly Red, and Kanto YU6s. Blue jeans and audioquest cables.

 I thought it was a little dark at first, that the sound signature applied too much weight to the low to mid bass. But then I compared it A to B with the head phone out, and realized it was just allowing the instrument to breath. The separation is amazing, both stereo separation as well as the separation between instrumentation. I have not found one incidence where it becomes muddied (that is not attributable to the recording itself)

  I'm dinging it one star simply because it seems a bit expensive, and the sound - while definitely improved over the internal PC DAC, didn't quite take things to the degree I thought might be possible in a $200 DAC. Possibly though that's because of the limitations of the audio files I'm listening to, or the competence of my computer speakers (good quality Altec Lansing 2.1 system).

After getting my Windows PC set up and running, I noticed that the audio through the normal audio out jack would frequently go into harsh, unlistenable distortion. Rebooting would fix the problem for a while, but then it would start distorting again and would remain that way until cycling the power off and on again.  I was not happy that my computer had a sound distortion problem, but I'd already loaded and customized the PC to the point where I didn't want to return it. So for the price of the Dragonfly Red, the audio problem is solved

 They power everything to a comfortable level, except for the HD800 which they still power to an acceptable level.  Don't expect to hear "completely new music" with these. Unless your onboard dac is completely terrible, you may not even hear a difference in certain songs. Still have some testing to do so will update review in the future

  Through my MacBook, I was unable to really hear a difference on any music besides classical. Again, there are many desktop dac/amps at half the price (check emotivas/ monoprice desktop dac/amp). But this is much smaller than those. On my phone, the difference was very noticeable on mids which were definitely more clear

Honestly out of all 3 I think I like the used membrane from goodwill the most but I need a backlight on the keys so it's doesn't work for me. I guess I just need another membrane with a back light but a different one

 Subtle, but real. You have to be in genuine listening mode. Like, I mean listening, not thinking about the world or running to catch your plane. Such palpable, audible beauty requires YOU! If you can sustain that mind, even for a while, it will make you smile

 FLAC tracks consume more storage space, but once you delete your old Mp3s, the gigs will resurface. And the DIFFERENCE will make you SMILE. The Dragonfly Red is a tremendous innovation in "portable" audiophile gear that breathes new life into your smartphone. Buy this one

 As the Tab S2 with an SD card can handle 150 GB of FLAC tracks, international flights are filled with very high quality sound now :-) - Fly the Dragon.

 I've used Dragonfly Red on MAC for music and video editing and on a PC for music and playing video games. The level of sound this produces it's on par with $400 DAC i used for my guitar and bass. I'm not going to get technical since there are few reviews here already that go way more in depth that I can.  Pro's -Music quality improves drastically with Apple music and Spotify

 With TIDAL lossless it sounds exactly like CD quality. -Durability. I've keep it in the case when not using since it provides protection in case its dropped. -Finish

Today I completed my work setup with the ifi Zen Dac V2 and 58x and couldn't be happier. I have yet to compare the 58x with the 650 on the same gear but what I do know is that this combo sounds great, and it's exactly what I was wanting for office listening. I'm a therapist and the time in between sessions is never enough and has typically been spent doom scrolling or staring at a wall. Rather than a strictly critical listening approach, I wanted something to shift my mood and give me a much needed recharge

 The amp is way better and the connections on the back are better too. The Fiio K5 Pro uses a standard USB B to A cable and not the USB 3.0 B to A. The K5 is more compatible

 I troubleshot, downloaded the latest drivers & BIOS, and tried different ports. I disabled USB power suspension too. Nothing I could do could get the ifi Zen Dac v2 to work after I put my computer to sleep and woke it back up. This was 100% a deal breaker for me and I tried 3-4 different cables too

 The Zen Dac has much better soundstage and control on the highs. It is feature galore and if you are simply looking at features, then this is probably the best value for the money. However, if you’re like me and don’t care about MQA, DSD, or balanced, then this is not the best option. Get the Fiio K5 Pro, because it’s the better product in sound and build quality

  3) It does NOT come with a wall plug, I would suggest getting one for external power if you have a noisy USB on your computer.  4) The cables it comes with are short, like WAY short. Both the USB 3.0 plug and the RCA cable are only 6" long, these really should be longer included in the box, especially the USB cable as it's the USB 3
