 For boots, I split my time between SCARPA Maestrales and SCARPA F1, the first light touring boot whose flex fits my style. I skied the Atomics with the SCARPA F1. 

 While these skis flex in a nice looking curve, they’re not particularly soft. I’d call it a “medium” flex. In other words, your body weight could be a factor in how the Backland skis; scrawny speedsters might find them too stiff.

 Most importantly, they were light enough to haul up over 10,000 vertical feet, yet didn’t leave me wanting a wider, beefier ski on the descent. The combination of a full-length carbon insert, moderate rocker, sidewall, and a traditional camber seems well-suited to spring-time conditions.

 In other words, your body weight could be a factor in how the Backland skis; scrawny speedsters might find them too stiff.

 They initiated turns easily, did not chatter or hook on firm snow, and landed solidly on hop turns. They were sooo smooth on the corn.  Right, so this morning I skied on the Atomic Backland 95. So I took it up from the valley before the lifts had opened and I was really impressed with how well the ski performed, especially skinning up on it. I really enjoyed how easy it was to kick turn. It meant that steeper pitches were really easy to tackle

 And then once I got up to the test site, I didn't feel particularly tired because it's such a lightweight construction. After that, once I started to take the ski down the hill and really see what it was like from a performance perspective, I was really pleased with how well it performed both on piste and in the powder. Because it's got a camber construction, it offered really good edge hold and I was very happy with how it performed overall even when I took it back onto the piste as well. After spending some time on this ski, I really feel like it's an ideal ski for somebody who is just potentially starting to get into touring

It's a little bit narrower than its bigger brother in the 107 and therefore it offers a little bit more ease of use and still really good performance on the downward.

 The ski also features our new Horizon Tech tip in the ski, which gives it 10% extra flotation. The ski works really well with a traditional pin binding or with our new all-terrain binding, the Shift. Right, so this morning I skied on the Atomic Backland 95. Atomic Backland 95 2018-2019 Ski Review | Ellis Brigham

 Pretty darn light, Atomic uses their ultralight wood core and then they use their carbon backbone to stiffen it up. You can kind of see in this back window here what they're doing with that carbon, just kind of interlaying stringers here in the tail and then through the shovel stiffens the ski, boosts performance, does not add a whole lot of weight. So that's kind of how they go about building this. This is the 177

 Again, this is a 177, generates an 18 meter turn radius. So that's kind of right in the middle for where you want these mid 90s skis to be. This is a really good shape for versatile touring, wide enough to float through the powder but also narrow enough to keep the weight down, make it pretty easy to skin around. So anytime you're going up something that's a little bit more technical, it's easier to have less material under your foot

 Atomic is weighing it in at 1350 grams per ski, so definitely on the lighter weight end of the spectrum. A couple other cool things here, they got their kind of step down, I think they call it DuraCap sidewall, so pretty much a vertical sidewall from here to here, transitioning to a full cap to the tips and tails. So that's another weight saving method that they use. It also increases the maneuverability and quickness of the ski for those sketchier downhills

 So having a little bit less tail rocker makes sense to have that straighter cut to it, but we still get plenty of tip rocker, you know, this shovel has some nice splay to it, that rocker starts down about here, so great flotation out of this 106 in that backcountry snow. So yeah, if you're looking for something that will handle, you know, deeper snow in the backcountry and you're looking for that wider option for your touring ski, I think this Hannibal 106 makes a great choice.  And then a nice metal skin fixation on the tail, you know, we don't really see metal a whole lot back here, so that's a pretty nice little upgrade from Fischer. And we've seen that tail basically in all the Rangers leading up to this, which is kind of the Ranger TI versions, which is kind of a nod to their sense of quality and, you know, just the commitment to making good skis from top to bottom. Again, 171 here, we are looking at a 21 meter turn radius, so pretty long, pretty straight in the cut, that definitely helps for skinning efficiency. And then when you get to the top, you know, you don't really want something that's super turny or hooky, especially because we're dealing with less tail rocker than we see in some of the more alpine oriented skis

 Welcome to our 2023 ski test. We've got a Fisher Hannibal 106C for you today, nice wider option in our touring department. Definitely more of that touring specific ski rather than a hybrid or 50-50 that we see a lot of these days. Definitely has the weight to warrant that uphill efficiency, has a little bit wider of a shape for more of a downhill use, but I wouldn't really say that this has a whole lot of a resort or a lift served application, maybe when needed or to access other areas, but definitely not a daily driver in terms of downhill capacity, kind of like what we see from Blizzard Hustle or Nordica Enforcer Unlimited

Starting with the construction, they do have a Polonia wood core

 You know, as these get wider, they do lose a little bit of that 4F stiffness, but this one's still got a good flex to it, going to give you good energy. Extremely light as a result, 1540 grams per ski here in the 178, and it's just, you know, when you pick up something this big and it's this light, it's just impressive, and you know it's going to be easy on the uphill. It's a little bit on the wider side for, you know, the touring application, just from a skinning standpoint, but when you get to the top, you're going to get much better flotation than on a narrower ski, really makes it all worth the while, you know, when you're at the top of a big mountain and you have something this wide on your feet, and it's going to keep you afloat. On the 22 meter turn radius on this ski as well, so a little bit straighter of a cut, we see that more often in the touring skis, just because it's easier to skin on, as well as when you get to those big mountains and wide open terrain, the ski isn't as hooky or as grabby, it doesn't want to pull you across the fall line, putting more emphasis on the skier and their ability and desire to make a certain shape turn. We do get some pretty dramatic rocker on this ski, especially in the tail, I'm sorry, the shovel, some decent camber underfoot for edge grip for when the conditions are sketchy, you definitely want to have that camber for, you know, holding on tight, but we do see that rocker profile starting well below the taper line here, and then going up and pretty dramatic splay at the top here
