 For boots, I split my time between SCARPA Maestrales and SCARPA F1, the first light touring boot whose flex fits my style. I skied the Atomics with the SCARPA F1. 

 While these skis flex in a nice looking curve, they’re not particularly soft. I’d call it a “medium” flex. In other words, your body weight could be a factor in how the Backland skis; scrawny speedsters might find them too stiff.

 Most importantly, they were light enough to haul up over 10,000 vertical feet, yet didn’t leave me wanting a wider, beefier ski on the descent. The combination of a full-length carbon insert, moderate rocker, sidewall, and a traditional camber seems well-suited to spring-time conditions.

 In other words, your body weight could be a factor in how the Backland skis; scrawny speedsters might find them too stiff.

 They initiated turns easily, did not chatter or hook on firm snow, and landed solidly on hop turns. They were sooo smooth on the corn. Most importantly, they were light enough to haul up over 10,000 vertical feet, yet didn’t leave me wanting a wider, beefier ski on the descent.  Right, so this morning I skied on the Atomic Backland 95. So I took it up from the valley before the lifts had opened and I was really impressed with how well the ski performed, especially skinning up on it. I really enjoyed how easy it was to kick turn. It meant that steeper pitches were really easy to tackle

 And then once I got up to the test site, I didn't feel particularly tired because it's such a lightweight construction. After that, once I started to take the ski down the hill and really see what it was like from a performance perspective, I was really pleased with how well it performed both on piste and in the powder. Because it's got a camber construction, it offered really good edge hold and I was very happy with how it performed overall even when I took it back onto the piste as well. After spending some time on this ski, I really feel like it's an ideal ski for somebody who is just potentially starting to get into touring

It's a little bit narrower than its bigger brother in the 107 and therefore it offers a little bit more ease of use and still really good performance on the downward.

 The ski also features our new Horizon Tech tip in the ski, which gives it 10% extra flotation. The ski works really well with a traditional pin binding or with our new all-terrain binding, the Shift. Right, so this morning I skied on the Atomic Backland 95. Atomic’s standout freetour model is light for fast and long ascents, as good as a dedicated all mountain ski going downhill, and decent value considering the technology and design. The Carbon Backbone adds stability; the mix of cap and sidewall provides precision and forgiveness. The Ultra Light Woodcore keeps the weight down and tip inserts make skin use easier.

Atomic Backland 95 2018-2019 Ski Review | Ellis Brigham

 Pretty darn light, Atomic uses their ultralight wood core and then they use their carbon backbone to stiffen it up. You can kind of see in this back window here what they're doing with that carbon, just kind of interlaying stringers here in the tail and then through the shovel stiffens the ski, boosts performance, does not add a whole lot of weight. So that's kind of how they go about building this. This is the 177

 Again, this is a 177, generates an 18 meter turn radius. So that's kind of right in the middle for where you want these mid 90s skis to be. This is a really good shape for versatile touring, wide enough to float through the powder but also narrow enough to keep the weight down, make it pretty easy to skin around. So anytime you're going up something that's a little bit more technical, it's easier to have less material under your foot

 Atomic is weighing it in at 1350 grams per ski, so definitely on the lighter weight end of the spectrum. A couple other cool things here, they got their kind of step down, I think they call it DuraCap sidewall, so pretty much a vertical sidewall from here to here, transitioning to a full cap to the tips and tails. So that's another weight saving method that they use. It also increases the maneuverability and quickness of the ski for those sketchier downhills

The Blizzard Zero G 95 skis are a fantastic choice for backcountry skiers who are looking to maximize their enjoyment in the outdoors. From the first skin track to the last powder 8, the Zero G 95 skis are here to make your life easier and more fun. At 95 mm underfoot, the skis are in that good middle-zone where you can use them in a wide variety of snow conditions and terrain. They're not too wide that they lose some quickness, and they're not too narrow that they'll sink. They have the Goldilocks thing going for them, and for many skiers, this fits their ski style really well. From a construction standpoint, it's pretty impressive how Blizzard makes a ski this light perform so well. Starting with a Paulownia wood core, Blizzard adds pretty much a full layer of carbon to stiffen things up. This is done without the addition of much weight, given the lightness of the carbon fiber material. Further stiffening the ski is the carbon reinforcement in the mounting zone of the skis. This not only increases binding retention, but also makes the ski a strong performer in sharp turns. The longer radius sidecut is great for softer snow as well as uphill skiing. You're able to ride a straight ski, making it easier to get around. For the downhills, the longer radius makes it easier to vary turn shape and style, and is less catchy than a shorter radius ski.

Not going to spend a whole lot of time riding the lifts on these, certainly meant for more human-powered skiing. As a result, we'd recommend putting a more technical binding on this rather than a hybrid binding like a Shifter, a Duke PT, something with true Pintec and a rotation heel would better suit the weight of this ski. It is a full sidewall underfoot, and then it tapers to cap in the tips and the tails, so from a downhill perspective, that means that it's going to be very maneuverable, which the lightweight already makes it, but it does add that little bit of torsional stiffness underfoot, better edge grip for when conditions get sketchy

But overall, this skier here is going to be on the advanced side of the spectrum, pretty dedicated backcountry tourer, good for going up the resort, up and down, and as well in the woods, 95 underfoot, we're looking at a 22 meter turn radius, so pretty straight cut on these skis, and that's going to be all right for deep snow, soft snow. We definitely get the tip and tail rocker that help with the flotation as well

There is a binding retention plate in there, and then tapers to the middle and the front as well, so that additional laminate of carbon does stiffen the ski, doesn't add a lot of weight.
