 For boots, I split my time between SCARPA Maestrales and SCARPA F1, the first light touring boot whose flex fits my style. I skied the Atomics with the SCARPA F1. 

 While these skis flex in a nice looking curve, they’re not particularly soft. I’d call it a “medium” flex. In other words, your body weight could be a factor in how the Backland skis; scrawny speedsters might find them too stiff.

 Most importantly, they were light enough to haul up over 10,000 vertical feet, yet didn’t leave me wanting a wider, beefier ski on the descent. The combination of a full-length carbon insert, moderate rocker, sidewall, and a traditional camber seems well-suited to spring-time conditions.

 In other words, your body weight could be a factor in how the Backland skis; scrawny speedsters might find them too stiff.

 They initiated turns easily, did not chatter or hook on firm snow, and landed solidly on hop turns. They were sooo smooth on the corn. Most importantly, they were light enough to haul up over 10,000 vertical feet, yet didn’t leave me wanting a wider, beefier ski on the descent.  Right, so this morning I skied on the Atomic Backland 95. So I took it up from the valley before the lifts had opened and I was really impressed with how well the ski performed, especially skinning up on it. I really enjoyed how easy it was to kick turn. It meant that steeper pitches were really easy to tackle

 And then once I got up to the test site, I didn't feel particularly tired because it's such a lightweight construction. After that, once I started to take the ski down the hill and really see what it was like from a performance perspective, I was really pleased with how well it performed both on piste and in the powder. Because it's got a camber construction, it offered really good edge hold and I was very happy with how it performed overall even when I took it back onto the piste as well. After spending some time on this ski, I really feel like it's an ideal ski for somebody who is just potentially starting to get into touring

It's a little bit narrower than its bigger brother in the 107 and therefore it offers a little bit more ease of use and still really good performance on the downward.

 The ski also features our new Horizon Tech tip in the ski, which gives it 10% extra flotation. The ski works really well with a traditional pin binding or with our new all-terrain binding, the Shift. Right, so this morning I skied on the Atomic Backland 95. Atomic’s standout freetour model is light for fast and long ascents, as good as a dedicated all mountain ski going downhill, and decent value considering the technology and design. Atomic Backland 95 2018-2019 Ski Review | Ellis Brigham

 Pretty darn light, Atomic uses their ultralight wood core and then they use their carbon backbone to stiffen it up. You can kind of see in this back window here what they're doing with that carbon, just kind of interlaying stringers here in the tail and then through the shovel stiffens the ski, boosts performance, does not add a whole lot of weight. So that's kind of how they go about building this. This is the 177

 Again, this is a 177, generates an 18 meter turn radius. So that's kind of right in the middle for where you want these mid 90s skis to be. This is a really good shape for versatile touring, wide enough to float through the powder but also narrow enough to keep the weight down, make it pretty easy to skin around. So anytime you're going up something that's a little bit more technical, it's easier to have less material under your foot

 Atomic is weighing it in at 1350 grams per ski, so definitely on the lighter weight end of the spectrum. A couple other cool things here, they got their kind of step down, I think they call it DuraCap sidewall, so pretty much a vertical sidewall from here to here, transitioning to a full cap to the tips and tails. So that's another weight saving method that they use. It also increases the maneuverability and quickness of the ski for those sketchier downhills

 Pretty impressively light for what it is and how well it holds. Decent camber underfoot, but definitely more so in the tip and tail in terms of a rocker profile and to get that flotation, the rocker is one thing, the taper shape is another. So pretty tapered here, that's going to cut through the snow easily and give you that smoother performance and definitely a tapered shape in the tail. So widest parts right about here, so all of this back section of the ski is going to cut through the snow really well

 This we got a new ski here, this is an Atomic Backland 98. This is a women's version of the ski, the men's have a 100, so just a little bit narrower, but same ski overall. These backland skis have been pretty popular for a while, kind of that good mix of resort and backcountry, light enough for backcountry, but strong and stable enough for resort skiing. Just a really nice mix of all those performance qualities

 So pretty tapered here, that's going to cut through the snow easily and give you that smoother performance and definitely a tapered shape in the tail. So widest parts right about here, so all of this back section of the ski is going to cut through the snow really well. Also in terms of flotation, Atomic's HRZN or Horizon tips make a big difference with that. So what they've done here is they've kind of milled out this area in the tips, make it more of a convex shape and that mimics like what a boathole does in the water

 So they bevel the sides of the tips here making a more rounded shape. That allows the ski to stay on top, surf and plane over the snow. They increase the surface area without adding width. So that's a way that they make this float really well for its size

 Dura-cap construction, so it's half sidewall, half cap from here to here and then full cap through the tail and into the shovel. So light and easy on the swing weight. This is the 164 ways in Atomic States at 1200 grams per ski which is pretty darn light. They also use their carbon backbone on this ski so they inlay carbon stringers, you know, from the mid-foot back and then from the binding front forward

6 meter turn radius. So it is more on that s-turn type of path here. So you know, expect to be making shorter, more energetic turns on a ski like this. Again, for its weight, it gives a surprising amount of energy

 Pretty straight through the tail. You do get fantastic snap out of that. You know, if you're using it even just on a groomer, it just reacts really well. Excellent energy out of the turn

 These are in the tail in some skis as well, like the bent models, they tend to have it in the tail as well. Here we just have it in the tip, and what it's doing is it's basically just boosting flotation. So it's giving the tip more surface area, it's displacing more snow, like a displacement boat hull if you're a boating enthusiast, and it's a pretty cool design. It's not just cosmetic, it's not for looks

 I'd say the lighter the wood core, the more technologically advanced it is. I know that's kind of like counterintuitive maybe, but that's the way that I think about it. And then we also get carbon stringers in this ski. So Atomic calls it carbon backbone, and essentially we just get a series of longitudinal carbon stringers that really give it a stronger and snappier flex pattern than you might expect from a ski this lightweight

 We've got, let's see, what length do we have here with us? This is the 172. We've got a Solomon Shift binding on here, so this thing's already pre-mounted with an extremely appropriate binding. And even with that binding, we're just over 2000 grams, we're 2150 grams. So as a total package with a shift binding on it, that's quite lightweight
