The current crop of Atomic skis (Bentchetler, Maverick, Backland) have some of the worst edge hold of any modern skis. I don't get why they are so popular. They are fun on soft snow, very nimble and playful, but scary on anything firm. Any other ski from a major brand will be more secure on firm snow and have more "stopping power

This year I demoed Atomic bent chetler 100mm at vail and park city. I like the skis but felt I was struggling with them when the snow wasn’t great at park city last week. I just didn’t feel like I had as much stopping power if that even makes sense. I’m used to ice skating on the slopes in the Midwest. I’m looking to buy my first set of skis for next season and know literally nothing about skis. It seemed like the bent chetlers did great when the snow was nice in vail but only so so on older snow. I would like a ski that is all mountain capable with atleast 2/3 of the time spent off piste on black and double blacks. I would also like something nicer up to $1,000 in price.

Looking for advice on first set of skis

 For just a touring ski, I think these are fantastic. Like if you want a touring ski that skis down just like your resort ski, this is gonna be an awesome option. I was surprised at how well this handled on firmer snow for a ski that's this light. It did get thrown around a little bit, but I was really happy making turns as long as I was willing to dial it down a little bit on firmer, uneven terrain

 At 100 underfoot, this is like a very average width touring ski. If you're skiing spring corners, skiing midwinter powder, this is gonna be great. It's not gonna float as much as wider skis and it's not gonna be quite as light as some of the narrower skis that a lot of people will tour with in the spring. But if you want one ski that's gonna go anywhere, it'd be pretty light for the uphill and ski down, this'll be a great ski

 When you're looking at a touring ski, you're trying to figure out how much weight can I shave for the uphill and still be able to ski downhill well. This is a pretty dang light ski that skis down really well also. At 100 underfoot, this is like a very average width touring ski. My favorite thing about this ski is just like how well it skis the resort for how light it is. When you're looking at a touring ski, you're trying to figure out how much weight can I shave for the uphill and still be able to ski downhill well. So they mill out the sides of the front of the ski here, create more of a boat hull shape to it, and that allows it to plane up and stay over fresh and soft snow. They increase the flotation without making the shovel wider, is kind of the whole point of that. Pretty nice energy through the tail

 As it gets longer, that radius increases as well, allowing the skier to, you know, dictate the shape and duration of the turn a little bit easier. Great in the trees, pretty good bump ski for the resort. In terms of that application, you know, feel free to put a regular alpine binding on this and just ride the lifts all day, you know, light, you know, a little bit wider if you're not looking for that dual metal laminate 100 millimeter underfoot ski. You want something lighter you can take all over the place, not have to work too hard, won't tire your legs out, you know, just fine for the resort

Just a surprising amount of edge grip, you know, when we first got on these things almost two years ago, you know, everyone was just pretty blown away at how energetic and snappy the ski was for the weight. So they're using about 20% rocker in the tip, lines up well with the taper profile, you know, good splay for soft snow

 It weighs 1,400 grams so it's coming in at a really light weight. If you team that up with the Atomic Shift binding you've got a really good free ride touring setup. The ski features are carbon laminate construction which is very similar to the Backland 107 so it's got the slightly beefier, more performance, more pop feeling to the ski. The ski is aimed at very much the adventurous free ride tourer so if you're up in the Scottish mountains here in Glenshee this is the perfect ski that we were on this morning

 How was it? Yeah it was great, basically the Atomic wanted to give us something a little bit different. They took us cat skiing which was unbelievable but really they wanted to show off their new kind of range of Backland skis and kind of adventure skiing they kind of sold it to. For me they had the 95, the Backland 95 and then the 107 in previous years and I felt like there could have been something in the middle just to tick that box and this sits perfectly in that box, 100mm underneath the foot. The conditions weren't great if I'm honest, we were hoping for a bit more powder but we had some good guides and we had the cat obviously so that allowed us to access some some nice little stashes and I can remember being able just to sit back on the tails of these and just kind of let the ski go

 For me they had the 95, the Backland 95 and then the 107 in previous years and I felt like there could have been something in the middle just to tick that box and this sits perfectly in that box, 100mm underneath the foot.  It takes hard snow really well, works well on hard snow as well as really good soft snow. It's a very playful ski, it features a slightly stiffer tail than the normal Backland skis so again that's going to give you a little bit more performance if you want to push the ski. So this is the Atomic Backland 100. Feedback from the testers today has been phenomenal, it's probably been one of the most tested skis from Atomic today

The Backland 100 blurs the lines of freeride and backcountry, proving that you can have a lightweight ski that packs a punch.  Welcome to our 2023 ski test. Today we're going to talk about the Atomic Backland 100. This is basically Atomic's most versatile or I think it's their most versatile touring ski. 100 underfoot, you know, you can take it into a wide range of snow conditions

 Now to achieve that light weight, Atomic uses an ultralight wood core in these skis, so quite a bit lighter just in the core than those backland, or excuse me, than the Bents or the Mavericks. So that really helps. And then there's no metal in this ski like we would see in the Maverick. Instead we get carbon backbone

 High performance ceiling, but not too, too hard to ski. So you don't need to be like the world's best skier to get on it. I think an intermediate, you know, that maybe you're just getting into touring, you could ski on this ski just fine. It's not going to beat you up, but it will be supportive of stronger and more aggressive skiers, which is sweet

 In fact, the very first time that I skied the Backland 100, I was just at a resort, just skiing the lift, and it happened to be an industry demo day, and the atomic rep throughout the day just kept saying, like, you got to ski the Backland 100, you got to ski the Backland 100, and somewhat reluctantly towards the end of the day, I was like, okay, sure, I will ski the Backland 100, and it totally surpassed my expectations, mostly in strength and stability and responsiveness. Sometimes you don't expect those things from a ski that's this light, but I thought it's commendable how strong it is, how precise it is, how well it can hold an edge, while only being 1,400 grams. It's one of those things that's extremely counterintuitive when you pick up the ski. You don't really expect it to have those capabilities
