You'll have to upgrade your horse as the game goes on to complete missions, though you will develop a relationship with some of them, particularly your first, and not want to sell or let them go. And yes you can drive a horse too hard and kill it. You actually have to treat the virtual horse like a real one

If you have an aggressive combat style, the daggers and the sword will be a good fit. More of a patient fighter that prefers to wait for an opening before delivering a mighty blow? The heavy blunt or the heavy blade are just for you! Or, maybe you want an all-around weapon type that can do a bit of everything? I suggest the spear (my favorite) or the staff. I have not forgotten about you guys and gals that prefer to hang back and attack from a distance. I rarely used my bow, but it’ll become available early in the game and has a ton of unlockable skills

Get to where you're headed, watch some canned dialog, then mount up again and follow someone off on some mission. For a real thrill, pick up someone from the side of the road and take them on your horse somewhere way off of your path. Technically and creatively it's very well done. The graphics, the voice acting, the attention to detail of things like the numerous weapons you can purchase are all very good
