Arc'Teryx Therme Parka vs The North Face McMurdo Down Parka

I have had this for a couple of years now and when I purchased this I genuinely thought it would be a coat that would last me for 20 years. Don’t get me wrong, this may still be a coat I have in 20 years but it is hard not to ignore the few quite significant issues with this coat. Firstly, is it warm? Compared to other more insulated and lightweight jackets this is not as warm. Yes, there is insulation but it’s not thick and bouncy

I'd still curse every day trying to do up the zipper, but I'd be thrilled with how warm the jacket is.

I tried the Therme parka and it was a bust. Quality and fit (really short arms) were horrible.

It kept me dry during periods of rain, sleet, and even hail. Cons: 1. The sizing/fit. I am about 6ft and 185 lbs, and I went with a size small

1. Hood is a bit large and because of the structure of the synthetic vs down insulation the adjustments don’t work great. The rear one in particular will slip very easy. I wish they had just made the hood smaller and used down fill so the structure was a bit softer and able to form to your head more when adjusted

so I order an XL in this coat. Nope, I need a large. It is cut like a tall: thin and long. I am 6’ 220 lbs so I am not fat, but I am not petite either

In short, currently not worth a 5 star rating or full retail price. Future iterations with the suggested improvements that should not cost the manufacturer so much to implement can check off all of the boxes and make it more worth the asking price.

Before purchasing this coat I read many reviews and watched a number of videos. There are basically two coats in the same class: one is the Canadian Goose ($1,000+) and the other is the North Face McMurdo. The Canadian Goose appears to be a great product but the use of Coyote fur and the price put it out of consideration. The McMurdo appeared to offer the same protection and comfort as the Goose but after purchasing I find three major design flaws that are so serious that I would have returned the coat if the return window had not closed

The overall style is very good, but the color seems quite off. I bought the black one, but when it arrived, it was more of a dark grey than your average black. The interior construction seems a bit thin, kind of like the Cerium LT's face fabric, hopefully it will hold up over time.

This is a very good parka, but I returned it for a different North Face style (the Gotham Jacket III) because there were a couple of style issues that, personally, I liked better about the Gotham. The McMurdo is longer, but that would have probably been okay with me if there were a way to adjust (tighten) the waste - to cinch it in. If that option existed, it wasn't apparent, and I looked carefully for that in case it was a hidden feature (like the hood tightening cord is). Also, I had a slight preference for the color options that were, at the time, available in the Gotham

This lightweight down insulated coat provides me the comfort of knowing I am protected in rain, freezing rain, snow or just cold winter weather. Best arcteryx purchase so far! Well worth the money

Even layered I fit into a small with a little space to spare, and I'm 5'5" and 150. The jacket is well designed with plenty of pockets and a very secure Velcro flap to make sure no air gets between your gloves and your coat sleeve. It is actually very comfortable and relatively light to wear as well.
