The Arc'teryx Kyanite Hoody scored exceptionally high marks in every metric we'd expect in a top-performing midweight fleece. It has a great weight to warmth ratio and most importantly, is incredibly comfortable to wear. The brushed fleece lining feels great against the skin, and while the cut is slim, it accommodates wide-set shoulders without creating any hotspots in the armpits or shoulders. Our testers loved climbing, skiing, and hiking in this piece. The scuba-style hood fits underneath climbing helmets and does a great job at keeping cold air out while trapping hard-won body heat inside. 
This piece really only has a few downsides. For high output activity in the spring and summer, this fleece might not offer the breathability you want when early morning and evening temps are rising. Our only other complaint is the lack of thumb loops built into the cuffs. Using this as a standalone piece is inconsequential, but when you're sliding it underneath other layers, thumb loops keep things from getting all bunched up. This fleece hoody is ideal for cold-weather pursuits where thinner gridded fleece just won't cut it.

Hey this is ultra multigear, and this is my video review on the arterix kyanite ar a new fleece jacket introduced in 2021. I first showed this piece when i was illustrating how to layer with the arterix beta ar and now that i've had a full season to really try out the kyanite ar and get my thoughts formulated. I wanted to share my impressions on this piece. It is part of arterix's essentials line, which means it's meant to be used in a variety of applications, uh mid layer outer layer

 But let me go into what makes the kyanite ar special by arterix in terms of temperature range you're. Looking at a rock solid, 30 degree jacket during the day, provided you are active and generating enough body, heat 30 degrees, you're gon na be very, very comfortable uh. I felt just fine with this jacket at that temperature range at night. You may want to pair with something a little bit bulkier like a practitioner ar to make sure you get that body, nice and warm, but during the day sun's out, 30 35 degrees are going to be just fine

 It will fit over a helmet, not something you would ever do under normal circumstances, but in an emergency emergency situation you may resort to whatever you need to resort to to feel warm. But you'll you'll be happy to know that if you have to hunker down the hood will fit over even a bulky ski helmet. The zipper is buttery smooth. The the outside material is very comfortable and soft against the skin overall, just a really just comfortable jacket

 If you let it air out. Your body heat is enough to get that moisture off your skin, but just know it does take a little bit longer to dry. In addition to the inherent wicking abilities of fleece, you also get ventilated pockets which helps get that warm air from inside the jacket and help cool you down and get the the moisture off your skin a feature i always appreciate. Ventilated pockets are always a welcome feature in terms of durability

The shoulder seams sit a little lower, which allows you to comfortably carry a backpack without pressing the seams into your skin.  On a hike or in a backpack, it will not weigh you down.  What makes this item even more comfortable is the articulated patterning and the gusseted underarms. Both of these additions improve the mobility of the jacket. Reach, jump, stretch, and more without feeling trapped or exposing your torso

The Outdoor Research Ferrosi Hoodie is a fantastic value. It ticks nearly every box that a durable wind layer for climbing or hiking should. It is lightweight, wind-resistant, breathable, abrasion-resistant, and highly stretchy. It has great features for the price &mdash; including a pocket that doubles as a stuff sack, so you can clip your jacket to your harness when not in use. It moves incredibly well, owing to the ultra-stretchy fabric, and even though it isn't very water-resistant, it is among the fastest drying active softshells in our review. It even has UPF-50 fabric to protect your skin from the sun. Add to all of this the fact that it is a very affordable jacket, and it is no wonder why this jacket is the staple softshell for most outdoor adventure nerds.
Our reviews wouldn't be objective if we ignored a product's flaws, and the Ferrosi is not without its minor caveats. Compared to other softshells, it has below-average water resistance, but it does dry quickly and offers great 3-season protection. The fit is a little on the boxy side, so if you're between sizes, you might consider sizing down. We also wish that the hand pockets were accessible while wearing a harness or the hip belt of a backpack. All these concerns aside, the Ferrosi is a great breathable, wind-resistant option at a fantastic price for hiking, climbing, and cycling.

The Outdoor Research Echo Hoodie has some unique features that make it an excellent addition for any activewear junkie. First, this lightweight sun top has switched from the fold-over cuffs of old to well-designed thumbholes that are comfortable to wear, even when on the move. Secondly, the Echo has a hole in its hood for your ponytail. Though this isn't the most stylish look, it certainly is very functional. Beyond these two unique features, this hoody is absurdly lightweight and impressively breathable. It is one of only a couple of shirts we tested that we could comfortably wear in the hot sun without pushing up the sleeves &mdash; precisely why it's great for days when you're pushing hard or in more intense heat. 
For all its other utilities, the Echo lacks pockets and has the lowest UPF value of any sun shirt we tested; just 20 for dark colors and only 15 for light colors. Most others are 35-50+, so this is underwhelming. And while we adore the breathability of this thin, quick-drying fabric, it's not particularly smooth, and we've had repeated issues with snagging in past versions. Though this current version didn't snag during our testing, it's made of the same fabric, so we expect the same to occur. Still, while the Echo may not continue to look pristine through the years, the quirky traits this top brings to the table make it super useful &mdash; and we love the bold colors it comes in too.

The Outdoor Research Carbide shines in its extremely breathable and comfortable shell material. The 3L Pertex shield material is one of the most breathable and comfortable materials we've worked with. The DWR coating of this material is also convincing, providing excellent weather protection for its weight. Combine all of this with ski-specific features to take you from the resort to the backcountry, and you have a stellar value for an excellent price. 
While this stretchy 3L provides excellent breathability and water resistance, we did feel the more biting winds permeate this thin material. This more backcountry-oriented shell is so thin that we have some questions about how it will hold up to the test of time, but after over a month of use, we have no reason to believe it will perform poorly. If we had just one wish for this jacket, it would be that the powder skirt was removable. This upgrade would knock this jacket out of the park. These small criticisms aside, we believe the Carbide performs similarly to many high-end shells on the market at a fraction of the price. 

The Outdoor Research Aspire continues to impress us. It scores high marks across the board; from water resistance to breathability, it comes fully equipped with all the bells and whistles. It's an impressive contender, proudly sporting a smooth, soft fabric and flattering fit. The substantial Gore-Tex, Paclite integrated fabric design will withstand and keep you protected from even the heaviest of downpours. It comes fully featured with reinforced, sealed seams and water-resistant zippers. It also sports an adjustable hood, hip cinches, and both elastic and Velcro to seal around your wrists to keep you protected in inclement weather. Being so watertight might sound awfully stuffy, but don't be fooled; the pit vents extend the full length of this jacket and can be fully opened either from the top or poncho-style from the bottom for a quick and easy way to shed excess body heat &mdash; and are surprisingly comfortable. When it comes to balancing protection and performance, the designers have covered their bases, with the Aspire earning our highest accolades for its design, fit, and performance.
Weighing 11.4 ounces, the Aspire is one of the heavier jackets we tested. Considering all the extra zipper length on the full-length side vents as well as the waterproof, dual-direction main zipper, we think this weight is justifiable. It also packs down into its own pocket, complete with a clip for easy attachment to your harness or pack. For an impressive merging of wind and water protection with serious breathability, look no further.

Outdoor Research Women's Ferrosi Hoody

 It is a wonderful weight, not too heavy, but not so light that it isn't helpful. The sleeve length works really well for me so it's comfortable using the thumb holes or not. It's got the right amount of stretch to be comfortable worn inside as a hoodie, or outside as a wind, water and abrasion resistant light jacket. I'm 5'7", 140# with and athletic build and often struggle to find a good fit because of broad shoulders, but the small fits me well

Even better than expected

 My only complaint is that the XS is pretty big on my 5'1, 98 lb frame (it looks like I'm wearing somebody else's jacket). I kept the jacket anyway because it's useful and fills a necessary hole in my jacket lineup--perfect for the windy days we get in Colorado.

Great, just a little big

This is my all-time favourite jacket for field work in the summer months (I am a biologist). It is very durable! I have to pass through barbed wire fences and bushwhack through the forest so my field work clothes get trashed - this is the first jacket I have owned that has not been a victim to fences and the forest! I have gotten it caught on the barbed wire fences and forest branches many times but have not had a hole yet - only snags. It it not completely waterproof, but if you got stuck in a light rain and quickly hike back to the truck, you are not soaking wet. This jacket is also very light weight which I love - perfect for when the bugs are bad on a hot summer day

 Working I'm inside outside back and forth all day long. Rain takes a long time to soak through, they dry instantly, and they move with me. A light puffy fits underneath when the temps drop. I run in them with a light base layer in western Washington winters

Versatile

 So the Cordura is a very durable, very abrasion resistant material, but it has that 9 % spandex. So you still have incredible stretch on the arms, but this is the part of the jacket that may come into contact with rock. If you're climbing it's gon na, come in contact with brush if you're wearing a backpack, you got backpack straps on there, so you really need durability in those areas, and this piece is durable. There it's going to last a long time going through the features here

 So you have all of that stretch and all of that breathability so places under your arm or you need that breathability, it's gon na dump out all the excess heat. This piece is going to move with you and be incredibly comfortable. Now it is a very lightweight material, so you don't have any insulation there at all, but you can layer with this piece if you are in colder, temperatures put some warmer layers underneath of it. Now this dark blue material on the arms on the shoulders and the hood

 You'Ve got a full length zipper down at the bottom. You do have a stretchy draw cord that comes out to one side, so you can cinch that down. If you need to kind of hold in the heat a little bit more, you've got two hand, level pockets and one side of the pocket does have a loop on the inside. You can hang that from a harness or hang that from a back and that pocket turns inside out and the jacket actually stuffs into that pocket so nice hand level hand warmer pockets there

 So as you're moving and you're building up heat, this material is going to breathe a little bit better. It'S a ripstop nylon with spandex in it as well, so you have full mobility with this jacket. It stretches in every direction. It'S not going to weigh you down because it's so lightweight, so you don't have any insulation in here whatsoever, and that makes it great for using all year round so in the winter, when it's colder, you can get some layers underneath of it, but you can still Stretch in this jacket and then in warmer temperatures, it's going to breathe really well

 So you can warm your hands in there or the jacket actually stuffs down into one of these pockets, and there is a key clip on the inside. The pockets here are actually mesh on the inside. So if you open them up, you actually have an extra vent. So, if you're really moving fat and want to dump some extra heat open, those pockets have another chest pocket and that's great for something small like a chapstick

 So it's the perfect piece to almost wear year-round. The features here are really simple: you have a full length zipper and down at the hem. You have a stretchy draw cord that comes out to one side. The hem is dropped in the back, so if you're wearing a harness or a backpack with the hip belt, it's not going to ride up on you two hand level pockets

If you are looking for the do, a tall lightweight soft shell check out the women's Outdoor Research for rosy hooded jacket by now, the four OC line has become so popular that there's a lot of different versions. But this one in particular, has those technical features that you're going to want on Alpine pursuits, while you're backpacking, climbing, even paddling, but it's so comfortable and stretchy that you're going to want to wear it every day.
