 I'Ve tested the water resistance quite a bit, and i've also tested the durability. This is their 11th day straight on this trip. So unfortunately, i smell a bit. Luckily, you can't tell that on the video, but also i have used them quite a lot

 One of the features i've really fallen in love with on this trip is, i never used them before in other trousers is the um. Let me find it there we go hang on. Let me find it is the elasticated hem at the top, like i always thought these were a bit of a gimmick to make. You look like more of a gnarly climber, but what i found is that, instead of having to use gators on boggy ground and things and to keep things nice and tight and secure so like when i'm climbing, i don't get my laces caught, then they act almost Like a little bit of a gator, and i just tuck everything up inside and because the trousers are stretchy, then they don't tend to ride up over the top

Coreloft on the other hand doesnt last quite as long. The strands will degrade over time, i have a 2015 atom lt which ive used quite heavily and the coreloft is slowly getting towards the end of its lifetime so for the most part i usually expect the synthetics to last around 5-10 years. Although that being said my kappa hoody I'd hope would last on the longer side of things.

The kit i own that i reckon should last would be my gore pro hard shells (alpha fl and beta lt). These things although are 40 deniers so far have proven to be able to be put through their paces and are great jackets. I dont own an alpha sv because im not an ice climbing but i think thats for different discussion. Id also say my gamma lt and gamma mx should last about a decade, the lt less so than the gamma mx for obvious reasons but i only really use it for summer trad climbing so it doesnt get too much use

Bringing up this discussion because i think there is a discrepancy between how long people believe arcteryx gear lasts and how long it actually lasts; and how this negatively affects brand image. 

People that i talk to think arcteryx is some sort of miracle gear, that because it is so expensive it is supposed to last a literal lifetime. 

Maybe once upon a time it was fair to say arc gear, shells in particular, could last a decade. I dont think that point stands anymore. 

Major problem is lack of product care i see arcteryx customers perform on their gear. Its a miracle if a jacket is washed more than once, and its usually the second wash that reveals how bad glue dry rot has become in the uncared for shell. No matter how much we try and educate folk, i feel it falls on deaf ears, and purposefully ignorant ears. It is easier to believe the lie that arc gear magically lasts a lifetime than to actually care for gear to make it last a lifetime.  Few customers can comprehend that dwr needs to be re-treated and that wetting out does not mean a jacket is leaking. These matters that can be solved with some education and tlc, really overburden the warranty department in my eyes and prolongs the warranty process for those with legitimate warranty issue. But thats another thread for me to write.

Even so im finding more and more that properly cared for gear delaminates way too quickly. My own gore pro shell that has been properly washed and cared for on a weekly basis and hardly abused is beginning to delaminate after only a year. Im waiting to hear what my cs rep has to say about it. I really dont want to tolerate less than a full replacement for something so young.

My gamma lt pants thigh pocket delaminated just carrying chapstick in there... like come on. Same with brand new sigma fl's. 

Delamination is likely not an arcteryx issue, moreso a goretex issue. So its not the fairest to put all the blame on the bird. However i dont want to tolerate mediocrity in materials when we put fat stacks into these garments.

The more i use products that use glue the less i like glued products. I find that they fail too fast. 

With my intimate knowledge of arc ( i own more than 30 pieces now...) i think an appropriate classification for arcteryx gear is gear that allows one to fully maximize and utilise their skills and expertise in alpine environments without the gear itself being a hindrance in ergonomics and movement patterns. Longevity and Durability are not priority number one.  With this honest assessment in mind i dont see how casual consumers would want to purchase this gear beyond flexing and posing as people that maximize ability in backcountry pursuits. Someone sound the gatekeeper alarm... but seriously.  My parents see arc as overpriced malarkey that only 1% of users can actually appreciate. The other 99% are convincing themselves under the influence of capitalism and marketing that this over engineered gear is exactly what they need for a 2 hour long day hike on groomed trails. The only arc gear they own are toques that i have gifted them. 

I think arcteryx needs to stop trying to expand its markets and needs a back to basics campaign, where problems of longevity and design are addressed and solved, where customers are educated on the critical importance of gear maintenance and empowering them to do basics themselves such as gore patch and zipper repairs.  The youtube series for repairs is a fantastic start. Collections that dont actively embody the core of arcteryx winter backcountry pursuits are halted so that all resources can be  focused on the core. 

If longevity is not addressed, if one/two year lifespans become the norm, no amount of market expansion will keep the fires of the arcteryx forge stoked. Technical users will leave. New customers relying on stories concerning the old reputation will be the sole source of income. Until the next local outdoors brand goes full globalism capitalism on the market. 

Side question: what current arc gear do you own that you can expect it to last a decade+ .

Discussion on longevity: changes must occur.

Firstly, temperature. I layered the Gamma LT with a t-shirt & jumper across the 3 days and found that in the above temperatures this was perfect. Some days I could get away with just a t-shirt underneath and found that I was also relatively warm. This piece feels very breathable, so it won't keep you very warm and insulated but will keep you moderately warm (I found) if you're constantly on the move

I only have the gamma LT but want to confirm, Yes, the jacket is very heavy. It is a thicc softshell for wintersports. I use mine resort skiing and ice climbing but not for much else.

I was just wondering how the weather resistance of the different softshells compared to each other. I am looking to buy a lightweight softshell for ski touring, and I'm looking mainly at the Gamma SL and the Sigma SL, but I don't want to sacrifice utility for lightness too much :) Also surprised to see the Gamma LT is only 10g lighter than the Gamma MX? Strikes me as a bit odd.

Lastly, kind of a separate question, but if anyone has experience ski touring, would you recommend a softshell + hardshell or perhaps maybe a windshell + hardshell?

However, if you care about every ounce and packability, go for something with down. I like the Uniqlo packable down hoody. It's a few ounces lighter than the Arc'teryx and packs down smaller.

A small compact umbrella seems better than a super waterproof bag. Won&#39;t want to go out under heavy rain anyway. So likely just going to go with a small compact umbrella. It&#39;s much more versatile anyway.

 They are comfortable enough to wear all day. There isn't an Arc'teryx equivalent to my knowledge.

Looking to get some trousers that do everything. Water and wind resistance for hiking and cycling, warm when paired with a base layer, but also able to be worn comfortably all day around town or in an office. Would a softshell pant like the Gamma AR be comfortable against skin for everyday use?

Gamma AR Pant as everyday trousers?

The Gamma LT feels a bit overkill for my needs. It's a little long, a little too big, and the hood too large - I know it’s built for use with a helmet but I'll never wear a helmet when hiking or just wearing around town. It’s a great, durable jacket for hiking and technical use but the whole package feels a bit overbuilt for my needs. Thinking something a little lighter weight, shorter in length, and with a non helmet compatible hood might be good

Not too dressy, not too sporty, not too heavy…I could go on and on but let’s just call this Gortex joy the Goldilocks jacket that fills all your travel needs in a nice small package.  I can roll this up into a small little ball that fits so nicely in a tote, ready to pull out at the drop of a hat or a raindrop or a drop in temperature.  You won’t need a hat, by the way, because the Essential has a hood!  Finally, the navy color is just so kind to those of us of a certain age whose complexion just needs a lift.

Absolutely perfect travel jacket

I bought two different sizes in two different colors. Large in burnt Orange was a bit tight with big sweatshirt for the winter football games (no inside zip pocket either), but the XL navy which I liked a lot (has inside zip pocket at) was WAYYY too big even with a sweatshirt, I had to return both of them. Sad!!!

So it uses a two and a half layer Gore-Tex pack light membrane which is highly breathable and waterproof. Added to that you've also got the pit zips underneath the arms so you can add venting if you need it
