The thorium ar, while cheaper, heavier, and with less impressive down fill, does a better job of holding down distribution more evenly due to its more robust fabric. The thorium's outer fabric also seems to help with warmth by being less breathable to wind. Due to the nature of down, breathability should be less important than holding in warmth. High exertion should be for synthetics

The fabric complaint extends to the outer durability, such as using it as an outer layer on cold days without precipitation, as well as anchoring down insulation. Despite the 850 fill that is generous, I have found that insulation in the elbows and shoulders tends to clump in the portions of the baffle that contract the least, creating cold spots in areas of high movement. This is true even when wearing a hard shell. Cold air is easily funneled through

 Due to the nature of down, breathability should be less important than holding in warmth. High exertion should be for synthetics.

To make this jacket far better, why not use the Arato 30 outer fabric? This might add some weight, but it would substantially improve the usability of this jacket.

Warm, but not much warmer than Thorium AR

It's a gorgeous piece, the fit is amazing, and the warmth to weight ratio is absurd. Total weight is 25 ounces, with a whopping 11 ounces of the best down available anywhere. I especially appreciate that there's down on both sides of the hand pockets, and it's cut lower than my butt which is real cozy. I also use an Arc'Teryx cerium SV hoody for not quite as cold trips

Additional detail. But also since it’s expensive considering that my activities will, hopefully, ramp up over the next couple of years. I bought Mountain Hardware Phantom, but am having second thoughts and doing additional research while I can still return it.

Summit Puffy: What you got?

One of the most comfortable insulation pieces I've ever worn. I've been able to wear this in a ridiculous range of temperatures due to the breathability.

I got this idea because when I first started getting into Arc'teryx, I was a student with limited budget. Therefore, I thought to myself "If I only get these pieces, then I would be set." Of course, as many of you would know, the temptation is hard to resist. I figure it would be interesting to see what gears other people value, while it may also serve as a good buying guide for people getting into the brand. 

**So, the question is, what 3 pieces of gears would you recommend/deem as essential for someone starting out.** You may provide justification for why you have selected the specified gear. Please do not simply choose the most expensive, the best specced gear as it can be unrealistic for many starters. 

If you are unsure, you may follow the format of 1) A shell 2) An insulation piece 3) Any other. I figure that would cover multiple different climates and intended purpose. 

My choices are a bit generic but here they are: 

1) Beta LT

2) Atom LT /Proton LT

3) Gamma LT

If you could only have 3 pieces, what would they be?

Been getting into overnight camping in the Swiss mountains where I’ve gotten down to -10C (15F) so far. Advice was to get a good down jacket for times at camp and to layer in sleeping bag. I got the Cerium SV without actually knowing the brand, but it fit the bill as heavy yet compactable. 

The first time I used in action I had reached my campsite and by the time my tent and gear was set up was very cold indeed. But when I put on my Cerium, my sweet sweet lord, I was snug as a bug!!! 

Plus packs up nice when space (and weight!) are at a premium. Not to mention that also fashionable enough for urban use on those cold winter days ;) 

Savior at cold campsite!!

 I realize that 90%, at the minimum, of the down used in Arc'teryx is considered to be down clumps, while the other 10% are these small feathers, which have minimal insulation. However, aesthetically, as well as cost-wise, it feels like it’s an awful shame to have small feathers constantly poking out of the stitching.

In terms of fit, the new model for 2017, in a small, fits incredibly well. I am 5'11 and 150 lbs and the jacket fits well to my body, with no loose or too snug areas. The new waist band synches are incredibly useful in maintaining a good torso fit when extending your arms above your shoulders. The fitted elbow collars are great for rolling up your jacket's arms to the elbow, and synch around baselayers well

I recently discovered that I was not allergic to down, after an early childhood allergy diagnosis! The simplicity, design, and the very stylish nocturnal color were all big reasons to get this jacket. I had also considered the EOS and feathered friends version of a lightweight jacket, but the placement of coreloft meant greater versatility with exercise in a wet eastern State. 

This jacket packs an incredible punch with warmth. Simply hiking down hills in 20F, with low effort can cause me to overheat. But for low intensity walking, resting on a mountaintop, or city life, this jacket thrives in cold, dry weather. I have yet to experience this jacket with downhill skiing, but I’m sure it will thrive with an appropriate base layer

Amazing Jacket with one minus feature

The Cerium LT is my go to jacket for trips to the backwoods, downtown or a downhill ski trip.  I have had many down jackets from European competitors and none of them stack up to the weight/warmth ratio, fill power (loft of the down), detail for construction, outdoor performance and the overall design of this Arcteryx mid weight down jacket-it is best in this class of mid weight down jackets.   My experience is that I wear the Cerium LT more than any other jacket in the fall and winter in The Netherlands' moderate climate.   When I traveled to Canada (pre-Covid) for work in the dead of Ontario winters (-20 C), I really needed my Cerium SV (Canada is too cold for a native Californian)

  Arcteryx stand behind their products and this is by far the most innovative lightweight jackets in the premium technical mid weight down segment of the market.  I am 6' 1" or 186 cm, waist 33, broad shoulders and thin athletic build and the Large fits perfect..

it is an athletic fit and won't work if you have a large frame or big belly...or size up then

Best down jacket for cold dry weather or mid layer

I bought the previous Cerium SV last year and it was stated 100% goose down (850) on the website. I like the lightweight of the jacket except its rubbish zipper. I bought the newer version 2 months ago and thought it would remain the same quality with an improved zipper (since there were tons of complaints about this issue below). However, apparently Arcteryx decided to ignore the customer feedbacks (still uses the same zipper) and the quality even hits its new low by using Synthetic insulation instead of full goose down

Caution! It is no longer 100% Goose Down filling.

 Nothing my sewing machine couldn't fix but that's the price for this awesome light but warm cozy jacket.

 I have and give you some feedback on things that I like about it, which at this point I have really no negatives to sure about this new softshell jacket from Arc'teryx, which it's not a new offering from them. But for me its new, it's a new shell and having this is a really awesome for me, because I've always wanted an Arctic softshell. Our church really is kind of the the leader in the design and the fabrics and the things that they're doing for their outerwear. That a lot of people - don't they don't do the the moment that I put on this jacket it was instantly I knew I was gon na love and enjoy so let's get into some specifics about it and and then we'll go from there

 It'S almost like parka, nice and long on the back. We'Ve got your typical drawstring in the waist which allows you to tighten it up and that either keeps air front like cold air, from going up inside of the jacket or to help keep the the jacket twist. Your body on the hood you've got this. This bungee system that allows you to tighten up - and this is pretty typical for for any type of shell plus the bungee in the back, and that allows you to if you don't have a helmet on to really cinch up the hood, nice and tight on your Head so that you can keep yourself like from the the hood being too loose on you on your head, which is really nice

Sleeves are sooo long

 Then you have a lovely, very neat, little full length, zip when that's done all the way up to the top, the collar sits quite high, so that just protects your neck from the elements. Just helps to keep your neck a bit warmer round to the front. We'Ve got these two very generously sized hand pockets. It'S a really good place to stash your phone compass extra bits like that
