I too am a overly warm person. I also dislike wind. I love using the Beta SL Hybrid as a super packable shell.

Hi all, I'm looking for a jacket that's relatively easy to pack and that provides good weather resistance for wind and rain. I enjoy hiking but find my current coat far too big and warm, so I overheat easy, even in winter months. Ideally it needs to be something I can fit over warmer mid-layers, for mixed and harsh conditions (Scottish highlands, Iceland for eg.). If I can make use of the coat in day to day use too, then even better. 

I took a look at the two jackets above and both seem suitable in a variety of ways, but I'm hoping someone here can offer any additional guidance - or suggestions(!) - before I buy. I worry that the SL might not offer enough protection, though I'm also a little worried about the Gamma MX's hood being designed for use over a helmet, and how it might fare otherwise (too warm?).

Looking for a relatively lightweight, weather resistant outer shell (Hiking, Every Day) - Gamma SL Hoody, Gamma MX Hoody, or something else?

 They're a super small weight to add to your pack, but definitely the worth it. Gamma/Sigma/Rush FL pants, with the Beta SL would be an excellent winter activity quiver.

 Especially if they have good vents for dumping heat. The point for softshells, is that they'll be much for comfortable for high activity use, in good winter weather. They'll be most comfortable on bluebird days, but also work well for occasional rainfall or light precipitation.

TL;DR: picking between hardshell and softshell pants for winter mountaineering. Where do you draw the line to pick one over another? What are the main deciding factors (in your opinion)? What about hybrid pants? other suggestions?

I've been looking at getting myself some higher quality winter pants for a while now, but never pulled the trigger. They're one of the last pieces my kit is missing and I'm hoping to change that soon.   
For the past 3 years, I've been using Mammut's Schoeller softshell pants (now discontinued Base Jump model - not the newer Touring version!), but they often seem a bit cold (even with midweight tights underneath). They dry very fast and are super comfortable, perfect for colder autumn/spring days - but too cold and not enough water resistant for winter. Another big reason for upgrading is the fact they're getting tight around my thighs if I wear them with any kind of tights (since I started with mountaineering/alpinism focused training I've gained a couple of kg of muscle mass on my back and legs. Thanks covid).  
For reference; I tried on Lefroy pants once and they fit similarly if I remember correctly.

50% of my winter activities would be considered general mountaineering and hiking, 30-40% alpinism (dual ice axe scrambling etc.) and the rest ice climbing, with occasional ski touring. I'm more and more alpinism focused, so the amount of winter alpine climbing will definitely increase in the future.   
Temperatures I experience vary greatly, from -20°C (-4°F), all the way up to 5°C (41°F). The median temperature would be right around -6°C (21°F).   
Weather-wise I tend to stay home if the condition forecast looks too bad. So no extreme snowstorms - however, you never know when one surprises you out of the thin air. I'm looking for something that I could also wear for multi-day trips on 3000m and 4000m+ (13000ft+) peaks around Europe, where things like this are unavoidable and have to be considered.

Can anyone with similar use cases suggest a good Arcteryx (or any other brand) pants I should consider? I don't own any long pants from Arc so I don't know too much about their fit. I'm always afraid they wouldn't fit well over my thighs or would be too short. 

What about hybrid pants as [Alpha Comp](https://outlet.arcteryx.com/ca/en/shop/mens/alpha-comp-pant) pants? Are they really the best of both worlds? Or they somewhat work for everything, but don't shine at anything? Are they slimmer fitting, compared to other Alpha/Beta hardshell pants?   
I was seriously considering them as I could get a good deal on them in one of my local stores (last pair discount). I'm just afraid they wouldn't offer enough protection and would overlap with my current softshell pants too much.

 If you need it. Ok, so moving down to the front of the jacket. What we've got here is a watertight, biz, lon, front, zip and we've got watertight, RS zipper, slider hand pockets. So the IRS and they're in the name basically refers to this little recess and they're in the top of the zip pulley here, and that helps to create a nice seal around the top of the pocket to help with the whole weather protection side of things

 This grey area is your pack light plus, and then this kind of white area, which also runs underneath the underarms with with the scrim where the pit zip is, that is the scenic fabric. So the reason behind this is very clever, so normal gore-tex Jack's, you look at their standard gore-tex Pro jacket. It will have gore-tex on the front and gore-tex lining the pocket, and that means you've got two quite heavy weight fabrics in the same area. So using pack light Plus on the inside to create the pocket and you create the inside of the jacket and seen it on the outer means that you're just reducing that pack size because you're using this two different fabrics there it's going to pack down a lot

 For a reason I mentioned, it uses two types of fabric. I'Ve just explained the pack light. The other fabric it uses is gore-tex, seen it so what they've? So what art types have done? Is they put gore-tex Cena in high wear areas such as the shoulders, where you're going to experience pack rubbing and also in the main body so yeah? This is a three left fabric. It'S just a bit more durable and you can see it's slightly different

Inside Look: Arc'teryx Beta SL Hybrid

 I have a Montane jacket and it's a little awkwardly baggy sometimes since I decided to size up. Fortunately, with only one jacket left in stock which just so happened to be a medium, I was spared from actually having to decide for myself, and now that I actually have the jacket, there is no way I would get a small. When they say athletic fit, they mean athletic fit. I can layer an alpaca sweater underneath comfortably but the jacket bulks up a little and looks a little awkward

  Like the reviews I had read about Outland, Arcteryx reviews read nothing but praise.  I was a little unsure about what size to get since with their measurement guide I could go either small or medium. I'm 5'6" and 135lbs and I enjoy climbing and trekking so I have a pretty athletic and proportional build. I had read a few reviews suggesting to size up unless you actually were planning on wearing a t-shirt underneath every time but I was still unsure
