 You'Ve got these really nice little die-cut velcro adjusters, which seal up really tight and when i have got famously skinny little wrists. But these seal up really neat and tight around my wrists or will open up to dump heat or to fit over heavier gloves or mitts. And then right down at the bottom, you've got a dual sided: dual pull draw cord which pulls in right from the front all the way around. So you get a really good seal around the bottom of the jacket, helps to trap all that warmth inside stop all the drafts blowing up uh one thing that isn't here that is on the previous jacket, and i know if i don't mention it you'll ask me There is no longer an internal pocket, they've kind of swapped out pit zips in favor of an internal pocket

 I'Ll go into that in the fabric section, so it's designed primarily for hill and mountain use. It'S tough! It'S durable! It'S lightweight! It'S highly protective!  So this size large fits me beautifully to keep the weight down. Our Tech's have kept the features down. So don't expect a lot of bells and whistles with this jacket, you really just get the essentials, get two big zip pockets on the side here, big enough for a hat spare glass, bits and pieces like that, my sort of features on here little zip garages at The top, so the zip puller goes right in there just to make sure, though water runs in through the top of the zip you're going to watertight vislon zipper on the front. In all honesty, I’m the type of user who isn’t hard enough on their gear to require the robustness of the Beta AR, I’m currently only doing weekend hikes so being super UL isn’t my religion, I only have hooded midlayers so I was concerned about the Beta AR hood (though I admit it’s cool), I don’t deal with a lot of snow so having something as bomber as an SV would be overkill, I don’t climb so I don’t gravitate to the Alpha line, I like pit zips so I didn’t go with the Beta LT/FL (though I almost did), I really like the quieter/softer C-Knit even if it means I have to wash it more (helps with using this more casually), and it’s actually pretty packable as I compared it to the Zeta SL and found it folds down nearly as much in my pack. 

What is the perfect use case scenario of these jackets that Arcteryx would have designed it for? This post is spurred by Astramael's comment regarding his thoughts on the zeta line. 

Ok we know the zeta's had hiking and trekking in mind. But what trekking trail would you need a 70 denier gore shell that weighs 425 g's? 


Through hikers wouldnt use them, 400g's is a lot of weight.  Which is why they made the zeta fl. but the through hikers are generally frugal af and wouldnt spend 420 on a shell, thus frogtoggs. 

Alpinists going into bad weather who would want a robust waterproof shell wouldnt use it because the feature set is not designed for that usage. 

Day hikers wouldnt use it, a lot of jacket to fit in a day pack for the off chance of bad weather. If we are being honest the vast majority of day hikers are summer fair weather hikers anyway. Few of them actually willingly and gleefully recreate in weather involving significant precipitation. 

Are we thinking westcoast trail? 
Himalayan, pakistani trekking loops? 

You bring a heavier weight shell because  you're likely going to be wearing it more than it is your pack. Goretex works a lot better in colder environments. So snow shoeing in marginal weather? You dont need helmet compatibility nor Napoleon  pockets. 

I think Astramael is right in his thinking that the zeta belongs in the 24 collection. I mostly sell zeta ar's and lt's to folk looking for a 99% commuting jacket that also want a jacket for 1% hiking. They view it as the jacket that doesnt use paclite, but not as expensive at beta and alpha ar. 

The problem with it being c knit though is that it is more susceptible to damage through sweat and oils, thus requiring more washing. However most folk never wash their jackets.... thus making c knit a bad option for quotidien usage.  I will give it credit however for looking nice and for its suppleness. 

It really is a weird jacket that has no home in my eyes right now even in the 24 category. 


So i ask again, where does it excel and who is it for.

However, if you care about every ounce and packability, go for something with down. I like the Uniqlo packable down hoody. It's a few ounces lighter than the Arc'teryx and packs down smaller.

Go Anywhere Onebag

This isn’t meant to be a highly technical review, but more my general thoughts after receiving it yesterday and spending some time compiling my first impressions of it. 

 I love my Gamma MX but generally use it most in a casual capacity as I find it highly versatile in that regard (I wear a black jacket MX to work in the fall and winter). The Acto FL simply feels much better to use in a highly active capacity; despite providing a decent level of warmth with a bit of wind protection, it really feels exceptionally breathable and comfortable. I tested it under an Atom LT for belay purposes and then my Beta LT, and I’m quite pleased with how it functions as a midlayer. The slightly slippery surface textile makes layering a breeze, and as other reviewers have noted, the Acto FL is really a piece you want to leave on all day, adding layers over the top as needed

 I’m a size 36 waist, which sometimes suggests a size L, and I sometimes find myself between Arc sizes with broader cut pieces like the Fission SV or LEAF Cold WX LT fitting me better in a L. Certain fleeces like the Delta LT and Kyanite LT also fit me best in a L, so I had some concerns the Acto FL might be a bit too baggy, but it is a very trim cut piece and ultimately fits exactly how I wanted it to. 

While I’m not a climber in any fashion, I truly have been desiring a more rugged hard fleece, one that is more technically designed than the Gamma MX. I’ll be using this for hiking in appropriate weather, as well as testing it out for trail running in the coming months. Its overall durability serves to make it a piece I can throw on and have no concerns over pushing past brush or rock, while offering the simplicity of a single layer system over wearing a fleece + soft shell separately. 

 For the same price as the Beta LT, the Triolet is significantly more robust and durable (it uses a 75D standard Gore-Tex construction), offers better coverage with a longer cut, and wins by a landslide in storage with five total pockets (including four exterior and one interior). The Patagonia is much bulkier and heavier at 1 pound 3.4 ounces and includes ski-specific features like a RECCO reflector and strap to connect to compatible snow pants, but we consider it the more capable option if you plan to spend a good amount of time in the snow. Last but not least is REI’s budget-friendly Stormbolt GTX

 Like nearly every 3-layer Arc’teryx shell we’ve tested, the Beta LT is quite formidable in rowdy conditions: its 40-denier face fabric and proven Gore-Tex waterproofing have effectively blocked everything from wet and slushy snowfall to strong gusts blowing off of alpine lakes. Further, the drop hem keeps the shell in place under a pack and offers just enough coverage for uses like winter and shoulder-season hiking and on shorter and less intensive ski touring days. It did feel lighter, more delicate, and less bombproof when worn back to back with Arc’teryx’s upgraded Beta AR (which uses 40 and 80D Gore-Tex Pro), but I haven’t had any failures to date. To help seal out the elements, the Beta LT comes with a nice array of thoughtful and protective features

 For starters, the StormHood is highly adjustable, has a generous brim, and stays locked in place. Importantly, it also cinches down evenly when worn over just a beanie, ball cap, or even a lightweight buff and leaves less excess material along the sides than most helmet-compatible hoods. Further, all of the zippers have held up nicely, and the RS sliders nicely seal out moisture. Rounding out the design, glove-friendly cinches at each side of the hem make it easy to keep out the cold, and rip and stick closures at each wrist allow you to secure the cuffs over undercuff-style gloves or around bare wrists

 I run pretty warm in general, but the combination of the shell’s moderately thin construction and generously sized pit zips (mine measure 13 in. in length) meant I was able to keep the jacket on longer than expected. Not too dressy, not too sporty, not too heavy…I could go on and on but let’s just call this Gortex joy the Goldilocks jacket that fills all your travel needs in a nice small package.  I can roll this up into a small little ball that fits so nicely in a tote, ready to pull out at the drop of a hat or a raindrop or a drop in temperature.  You won’t need a hat, by the way, because the Essential has a hood!  Finally, the navy color is just so kind to those of us of a certain age whose complexion just needs a lift.

Absolutely perfect travel jacket

I bought two different sizes in two different colors. Large in burnt Orange was a bit tight with big sweatshirt for the winter football games (no inside zip pocket either), but the XL navy which I liked a lot (has inside zip pocket at) was WAYYY too big even with a sweatshirt, I had to return both of them. Sad!!!
