Best jacket + pants/bib combo for resort and backcountry skiing?

The Alpha SV is actively worse for urban wear. You can’t put your hands in the pockets, it’s heavy and stiff and loud and not packable.

I am having a hard time deciding between the two. Can anyone help me out with their experience with Leaf products.  I like the colours and durability of the leaf line but all the reviews say the alpha sv is as tough as it gets.

I want the jacket for winter and mountain hiking but also urban wear.  It gets to minus 50 Celsius where I live. 

I was speaking with Arc’teryx support today and they told me the Leaf line does not has the same longevity as the outdoor line because after a soldier’s deployment they are getting their gear replaced anyway so Arc’teryx builds Leaf with this in mind.  Is this accurate?

Money isn’t an issue I just want the best.

<p>I ordered the cold wx hoody (also Leaf) to go under and I have a Arc’teryx fleece hoody as my base.  Will this be good for my extreme cold or do I want to ad a parka in?  Apologies for my novice questions this is just the first year I am trying the layer system out</p>

 You want a lightweight one. This is probably not the one for you, but if you want one that really is going to protect you and and it's going to perform at its best and it's still light for what it is. But it's not going to hit the lightweight backpacking into the spectrum. But if you want it for severe weather, particularly kind of, i see that scottish winter in particular it really fires

This one particularly is you've got the range into the top of the range the sv stands for severe weather. So it really does stand up to that.  It comes in at quite a few hundred pound. I think it's around six hundred pound now right now. I have this one a few years, so it's a little bit cheaper than i got it, but still it was 400 to 500. I think when i got it, i had a bit of a deal on it, but still you can get a good deal

 That said, the Beta’s offsetting 40- and 80-denier fabric is less of an impenetrable fortress than the 100-denier Alpha and its back length is a bit shorter, which make a difference for skiing and in truly rough conditions (for more information, see our in-depth Beta AR review). Another shell to consider comes from within Arc’teryx’s same climbing-focused Alpha line: the AR (“all round”). As its name suggests, the $599 AR is a little more versatile than the SV, designed for a wide range of alpine conditions with a moderately thinner Gore-Tex Pro build (40D and 80D) and lighter weight (15.2 oz

 The helmet-compatible StormHood is easily adjustable, highly protective, and offers excellent coverage without impacting field of view (more on this below). As ever the attention to detail on the Arc’teryx Alpha SV is outstanding, the stitch count is very high and all stitching has micro seams to keep you dry. The stitching is just about invisible and the all the cinch cords are hidden well away. The reflective, embroidered Arc’teryx logo is a nice feature and the Gore-Tex logo is colour coded on the arm. The Arc’teryx Alpha SV ouses premium product and looks it too, I’ve been testing the Rhodes Green jacket and everyone I’ve met has commented on it: a real head turner

In conclusion, the Arc’teryx Alpha SV deserves it’s title as the flagship Alpine jacket of the Arc’teryx range. The excellent and well thought out features shine through as a jacket that has been designed by Alpine climbers for Alpine climbers. It’s not the lightest jacket out there but it is the burliest jacket I have and is my go to jacket for Scottish winter and working on rainy days (which is more than I’d care to admit!). It still retains its status as an iconic hardshell and if you can afford the price tag  you will own one of the most desirable and performance designed Alpine jackets on the planet

That’s not to say it’s any heavier than previous versions, the redesign shaves weight off so the jacket is lighter than previous versions. The trusty CGR scales weighed the jacket in at 499g and the stated weight is 490g. Other significant features are the water tight YKK zips on the pockets – these are like YKK Aquacoil PLUS zips and have an extra coating to help keep out the elements and the main body zip is a good, chunky YKK Vislon zip that is the usual pull apart type of zip that Arc’teryx use on all jackets. Be warned that although this type of zip is great for ventilation, strong winds and heavy spindrift can open the jacket if you leave it undone! And talking of pockets the Alpha SV keeps it’s Alpine credentials by placing the pockets firmly above the harness line and opposite hand accessible

So, you can imagine my excitement when one of the new redesigned models became available for test. The Arc’teryx Alpha SV is still a highly desirable, fully featured and bombproof hardshell jacket. The 3 layered Gore-Tex Pro material has proved highly water and abrasion resistant throughout the test period and the jacket has become my go to shell for winter climbing. I have lighter and more compressible jackets but the Alpha SV is like wearing amour, when I put it on I feel like I’m totally ready for action

 They lock in the cuffs or tie in the waistband. It's a little bit loose but if you wear a sweater or the Arzarex insulator inside or a hoodie, it will just fit just right and give you just a little bit extra room to stretch out. You want to have the feel so it's restricted. It does make a lot of noise if you're prepared to swish left and right but with that being said, it's not too bad for the computation
