 The thin fabric makes for a hood that practically disappears when stowed, a nice touch when using the Acto as a layering piece. The hood fits over a helmet, though it is tighter than I am used to from Arc’teryx, but is also comfortable over just a bare head, or lightweight toque. It’s lightweight, breathing well when I’m working hard but also keeping the wind and weather out: as with other Arc’teryx products, the DWR finish is superb. The Tyono 30 Stormhood is lightweight and low-profile

 Long moves are no issue thanks to the stretchy fabric and Hemlock system. It’s also quite stretchy and, thanks to the Hemlock harness retention system, I haven’t had it come out from underneath a harness even when upside down in a figure-4. The Hemlock system is comprised of foam inserts in the hem: lightweight and flexible but creating enough of a ‘bump’ in the hem to prevent it from sliding out from underneath the waist belt. Additionally, the Acto FL now comes with stretchy hem drawcords, solving the ‘flapping hem in the breeze’ issue I had with the Acto MX

 Weight in a Men’s Large is 458 grams, which if you’re counting grams is on the heavier side of mid-layers but acceptable to me given the Acto FL’s versatility as both an approach and climbing jacket, and an insulating mid-layer once it gets colder. I suspect I’ll be wearing this jacket more than any other through the coming winter climbing season. Very highly recommended. Pros: great design, excellent fit, durable, versatileCons: odd sizing, inconsistent colours, expensive ($450 CAD)Overall: An amazing jacket that I absolutely love, from the approach to climbing, and either as an outer-layer or insulating mid layer

 The Acto FL is made of the same ultra-breathable Aerius Grid Loft fabric as the MX. With a 100% Nylon face, the fabric shrugs off scrapes, sharp rocks, and errant crampons. The smooth outer slides easily under layers, while the bonded, gridded, fleece backer wicks and breathes exceptionally well. I’ve been using the FL as both an approach and climbing layer and it breathes well enough that I can wear it to around +5C on an uphill hike without overheating

 A good idea but for me the jacket was long enough for that not to be a problem. A word of warning, Arc’teryx designers have been clever and provided a slot so the foam inserts can be removed – but getting them back in proved next to impossible!

 The informal “try to blow through the fabric” test makes it seem twice as wind-resistant than the main material. The hood fits perfect without a helmet on, which leads me to one of my only negative marks on the jacket. The hood is really a tad snug when worn over a helmet. If you have a low profile helmet like the Petzl Sirocco or Black Diamond Meteor III it would probably work, especially if you are a small or medium sized helmet vs my XL sized melon

 My home scale on my size large weighed in at 490 g / 17 oz. This puts the jacket towards the heavier side of “minimalist” jackets but I’m not sure that could be helped given the base fabric used. It’s not always this easy to narrow down competing models and make a top pick, but among windbreaker jackets, the Patagonia Houdini Air is head and shoulders above the rest. Building off the beloved Houdini below, the new Air takes the old formula but adds a ton of breathability and comfort to the mix. The jacket pairs a double-weave liner with a standard nylon shell, offering great wind protection and a softer feel than any other design in its weight class. In many ways, the Houdini Air is the Swiss Army Knife of windbreaker jackets and makes a great option for hiking, running, mountain biking, and a wide variety of other outdoor uses.

Keep in mind that with such a thin shell and air-permeable weave, you do give up some of the bombproof protection of a 100% nylon jacket like the original Houdini. That said, we took the Air out in 60mph, knock-you-over gusts near Patagonia’s Cerro Castillo and felt sufficiently sheltered from the storm. And although the jacket’s DWR coating is impressive, a thicker shell fabric (like that of the Black Diamond Alpine Start below) will offer better wet-weather protection. That said, no other design can match the minimalist build and performance chops and of the Houdini Air, making it our top windbreaker of 2022... The Patagonia Houdini is an iconic windbreaker jacket, and as a repeat winner at the top of our podium, continues to set the standard for all other jackets in this category. It performs exactly as a windbreaker should, packing down and stowing away until you need to break it out to protect you from wind or light rain. The entire jacket stuffs into its chest pocket &mdash; the resulting package is only about the size of a small banana. The lightweight package easily clips to a belt, climbing harness, or stashes into the smallest corner of your pack &mdash; it even squeezes comfortably into the tiniest seat bags, making it a great companion for long bike rides. Though it will never compare directly to a rain jacket, the ultralight DWR coating is at the top of its class and does a solid job of balancing wind resistance with breathability.

Remaining one of our favorite options for when keeping weight low matters most is the Patagonia Houdini. This impressively lightweight windbreaker continues to earn some of our highest ratings in wind resistance, weight, and packability. This piece has been around for years, which has allowed Patagonia to fine-tune the details to get a seriously impressive mix of function and weight savings. The Houdini compacts into a ridiculously lightweight 3.1 ounce package, sure to please even the most hardcore ultralight enthusiast. Despite this absurdly low weight, the Houdini is still impressively wind-resistant and withstood every adventure we wore it on, from climbing and mountain biking to hiking and boating. 
Of course, this impressively thin layer is a bit see-through, particularly in some of its lighter colors. This makes it not the best-looking model we tested. And though it claims to have a DWR coating, it does still eventually get wet &mdash; and a little quicker than some others. Compared to the Patagonia Houdini Air, the Houdini is slightly lighter but slightly less breathable.  I always throw it in my vest, just as a fail-safe when I ran Zion and I got extra cold at night. I threw this on under my heavier jackets, and it was just one more layer of insulation between my skin and so there you have it. The Patagonia Houdini, I love this shell. I would highly recommend it because it's so light and versatile, I always pack it in my vest for my hundred-mile runs if there's any chance of rain, or certainly at night as just an extra layer

I prefer the snug fit which makes it an excellent companion piece to a shell or insulated jacket. For reference I am a tweener sized human, size S Nanopuff and size M Houdini both purchased in 2011. Excellent breathability, cut, comfort.

 Considering its weight, Patagonia nailed all the right features. You can cinch the hem to block out wind at the waist, the half-elastic cuffs seal nicely around the wrists, and a single adjustment at the hood allows you to tighten it down effectively. Finally, the slight drop hem at the back is a nice touch for a little extra coverage. All in all, the amount of versatility you get for the weight is truly remarkable

 And on our trip to Patagonia, I found myself keeping the Houdini close and wearing it daily. It cut the wind nicely when we stopped for lunch while backpacking, and I hiked in it if the weather was cool or the wind was particularly rough. Considering its weight, Patagonia nailed all the right features.
