I'm sure I'll get downvoted to oblivion for this post in this forum, but it's an honest perspective from my experience. Everybody's is different, but yeah, prices are really not helping in this regard.

I've been a long time PC gamer and have several friends who over the years, expressed significant interest in building their own PC and gaming. Awesome - I thought. More people to game with always makes for a better time. 

When COVID hit, obviously people spent more time at home, needing better rigs to work off, etc etc. So I spent a bit of time with each of them trying to pick out parts based on their needs and budget. Most of them opted to wait for 3xxx series cards before starting their builds. Which, in hindsight was probably a bad idea.

A lot of them were so excited, they had some parts ready. Watched so many videos and tutorials. Even bought games. I was pumped for them too. 

But when it became clear that stock issues wouldn't resolve in the short-term... A lot lost interest. These are just normal guys - not the type who would set up discord alerts, do all the extra tasks required to secure a card. 

Some opted to just get consoles, others bought laptops because they needed something for work. Slowly, each one just lost interest and honestly I don't blame them. 

I don't really know where I wanted to go with this... I guess I just wanted to rant. We're all getting to the age where we have our own things going on (jobs, girlfriends, moving out, etc.) And... I was just hopeful that our gaming PCs would be a way for us to still come together as friends and share time with one another. 

It just sucks knowing that my friends, who honestly were poised to pick up the hobby that I love long-term, are just completely soured and turned off from the whole experience. I'm just sad really. I was so happy to share my world with them and now they think the industry simply doesn't want them as customers.

TL;DR: Apple has an impressive piece of hardware and their optimizations show. However, the 3-4x numbers people are spreading are misleading because performance (frequencies, mainly), don't scale linearly. Reduce the power draw of a Zen 3 CPU core to the same as an M1 CPU core, and the gap narrows to as little as 1.23x in favor of the M1

Alright, so all over the internet - and this sub in particular - there is a lot of talk about how the M1 is 3-4x the perf/watt of Intel / AMD CPUs.

PSA: Performance Doesn't Scale Linearly With Wattage (aka testing M1 versus a Zen 3 5600X at the same Power Draw)

 But this writer had to stick his ear right up on the rear I/O to even get a hint of it. It didn&rsquo;t rev up noticeably at even the peak of a Handbrake conversion grind, or after a series of six consecutive GPU game benchmarks. And the chassis stays remarkably cool throughout. There was no point in external thermal testing because the chassis was barely warm to the touch, anywhere on the surface, even at peak activity

The Mac mini remains the only true &ldquo;small&rdquo; Mac desktop. Sure, you can still select between 21- and 27-inch iMac models (which we&rsquo;d expect to gain the M1 CPU before too long, as well). But if you want a compact, macOS-based system that&rsquo;s not a laptop to attach to a TV, a spare monitor, or even just a public informational display, the Mac mini has long been the Apple alpha and omega. 

In the course of testing, one big thing we noticed: Through all these benchmarks, pressing the CPU and GPU to their presumptive limits, the Mac mini was whisper quiet. Now mind you, the Mac mini (like the new M1-based MacBook Pro) does have an active cooling solution inside, unlike the fanless MacBook Air. With a new lower starting price and Apple&#039;s straining-at-the-leash M1 CPU, the Mac mini is far and away the most polished, potent tiny desktop in its class.

 And it's simply mind-blowing that you can now buy one for as low as $650 brand new or $550 renewed with this level of performance and reliability during a time when Windows desktop PC prices are sky high because of graphics chip shortages and everything else. So if you're someone who just wants a reliable desktop computer for everyday use, the M1 Mac Mini is literally the best bang for the buck PC out there and it's an absolute no-brainer. But the only downside of the M1 Mac Mini is that performance is limited for those who really need a lot of power for productivity work, seeing as the latest Alder Lake i5-12600K CPU for around $280 on Amazon is now quite a bit faster in terms of performance. And while a full custom-built desktop PC with this new Intel CPU will be a lot more expensive than the M1 Mac Mini, there's no doubt that the M1 chip simply isn't enough for the heavy power users out there

 And if that's you, I would say that you should 100% wait for Apple's redesigned Mac Mini models that are rumored to be coming as soon as next month's March 8th event, which is when I'm personally expecting Apple to reveal the new high-end M1 Mac's Mac Mini, complete with the first full redesign in almost 12 years. And if you're wondering what it's gonna look like, renders by Shilesh recently made some new renders showing off just how impressively thin it's gonna look compared to the current model, and yes, it's gonna come with 4 Thunderbolt ports and the new magnetic power connector from the M1 iMac. But the most important part of all is that you'll be able to configure it with up to the crazy M1 Mac chip with 64GB of RAM and the 32-core GPU, which has more than enough performance for almost everyone out there. Now the only caveat is that I'm personally expecting it to start at $1300 for the base M1 Pro model, but if you care about performance whatsoever, I would definitely wait for the new redesigned high-end Mac Mini model

 But the most important part of all is that you'll be able to configure it with up to the crazy M1 Mac chip with 64GB of RAM and the 32-core GPU, which has more than enough performance for almost everyone out there. M1 Mac Mini Review after 1 Year: Buy Now or WAIT for M2?

I love this. As of this writing, I've only been using it a week. For someone like me, who already owned a computer screen, I just had to connect the cables and I was good to go!

 For some reason GeekBench only picks up the 4MB for the 4 power saving CPU's, you think if it was showing how much for type of CPU cores it would be showing the 12MB for the high performance CPU cores. I've owned mine just about a year and have updated to macOS Montery, love it, had some trouble on first update so had to reinstall it from the boot menu, the second time it didn't malfunction and installed properly and runs like a dream, its even faster than Big Sur because they made even further optimizations for the M series of Apple silicon for Mac's. Intel Mac's will not be supported long just like PowerPC Mac's were barely supported when they went Intel. DO NOT get an Intel based Mac at this point

 The 8 core GPU is surprisingly powerful, blowing the best integrated graphics on a chip that intel sells out of the water by multiple times its power. you can actually play games with it. on the 24 inch iMac the base model only has the 7 core GPU M1 chip just like with the M1 MacBook Air. The M1 Mac mini is the Mac that the M1 puts out the most power on because the overkill power supply and overkill cooling system

This is the most powerful little Mac mini ever. The M1 chip with 8GB of RAM never drags down.

 You can outfit the 2018 mini with up to 64GB of memory, whereas the new model tops out at 16GB just like the M1 MacBook Air and Pro. (RAM could also be upgraded by anyone willing to open up the Intel Mac mini, but that isn’t so for this machine.)  That potential will only grow when Apple inevitably raises the RAM ceiling and (hopefully) brings back those missing USB ports. The $699 starting price is tempting, but most people will be better off upgrading to 16GB of unified memory, which puts you at $899. Doubling the default 256GB storage makes that cost climb higher to $1,099. But even then, the price-to-performance ratio for the Mac mini has never been better than with this changeover to Apple silicon

Apple’s Arm chip punches above its weight class

One benefit of paying full price and buying from Apple, however, is you can customize the machine and add more RAM or a higher-capacity SSD, whereas the models sold on Amazon and other retailers are fixed configurations. And unlike in most other desktops, the Mac Mini's RAM is not user-upgradable. Apple's M1 system-on-a-chip integrates the CPU, GPU, RAM and other components for greater power and efficiency, but the downside of this integration is the lack of DIMM slots that would allow you to add additional RAM after purchase.

 You can get discounts on both the 256GB model and the 512GB model right now for lower prices than you can at the Apple Store. The 256GB model is harder to come by right now, but the 512GB option is $150 off at Amazon.

The baseline model of the M1-based Mac Mini costs $699 from Apple and features 8GB of RAM and a 256GB solid-state drive. The step-up model costs $899 from Apple and doubles the storage capacity to 512GB. You can get discounts on both the 256GB model and the 512GB model right now for lower prices than you can at the Apple Store. The 256GB model is harder to come by right now, but the 512GB option is $150 off at Amazon

 You can usually find a refurbished M1 Mac Mini with a 256GB SSD for $589 with a $110 discount, or the step-up model with 512GB SSD for $759 with a $140 discount. Refurb inventory changes rapidly so you may not always find an M1 Mac Mini listed. It's worth keeping an eye out, however, because you can lock in substantial savings. Rick Broida, CNET's Cheapskate emeritus, is a big fan of refurbs -- particularly Apple's, which are often as good as new

Best Mac Mini deals: Save $150 on the 512GB version

 It outruns the MacBook Air and the Mac mini here. The results flipped in GFXBench 5 Metal, which uses the Metal API and illustrates what the M1 is more likely capable of with native software (i.e., much-enhanced performance)

There&rsquo;s no point in prying inside, anyway. Unlike the 2018 Mac mini, the M1-based version incorporates the main system memory into the SoC&rsquo;s module. As a result, inside the shell, you won&rsquo;t find any SO-DIMM slots for upgrades as before. The amount of memory you opt for at purchase time, as well as the internal storage amount, are what you'll have to live with for the life of the system

Some of the results in these charts are patchy, as we were not able to test every machine in time on every test for this launch, and some we no longer have on hand for retesting. But the most strategic and telling results are all here.
