The 4 Best Laptops Under $500 - Spring 2022

Sorry HotHardware.com, but the Lenovo Duet, a mid-range Asus with a 7th gen CPU, and last-year's Acer Spin 713, with 10th gen CPU are hardly the "best of 2021", at least spec wise. The Duet may be beloved, for its features to price ratio, and the Spin 713 sure was nice for its time, but there are newly released models out with 11th GEN CPUs, Ryzen APUs, USI stylus support, and other more modern advancements.

Just bought the full bore 2021 Spin 713 (i5, 256GB, Evo-certified, etc.) at Best Buy today for $529. It's awesome, especially at that price. This thing just flies!

Last week Best Buy had a Chromebook Spin (2020 model) with an i3 and 4GB of RAM on sale for $280 and it looks like it's back! I hadn't seen a review for this model so I pulled the trigger and wanted to give some of my thoughts for anyone else who is considering it.

First off, I want to clarify that a few months ago I started seeing a sharp decline in the battery life of my Surface Book 2015. As a recent college grad, I didn't really have much money to replace a high-end i7 with 16GB of RAM so when I saw the Chromebook Spin on sale I knew I had to pull the trigger. I'm still using the surface book but I needed something I could take to cafes and on trips and at 3 pounds, it's considerably lighter than my surface book + UAG case which is about 5 pounds for a 13.5-inch Laptop.

The Spin has been negatively sighted for being a little "chunky" but honestly, I don't see it. It's not as thin a pixel book go but I doubt the vast majority of people are going to have an issue with its size. It's got a beautiful screen and there aren't a lot of 3:2 laptops out there so to be able to stick with a 2k screen and 3:2 ratio for under $300 was incredible. Bonus point for the one hand to open hinge design.

**The Bad**

I'll do this first because it's fairly short. As far as speed goes, I kinda knew what I was in for. It doesn't take a whole lot for this thing to trip up and I find that to be especially true with some android apps. I think it's more so the ram that's lacking as opposed to the i3 but this isn't going to be silky smooth 100% of the time as the reviews for the i5 with 8gbs of RAM mention. If you're using it solely for typing and browsing on the go like I am, and you have a second laptop or a desktop for more powerful tools this is still fantastic. The 64 gbs of internal storage could be an issue for some but I have Google One and this isn't a concern at all for me. Still have 40 gbs left and probably won't use much of it.

 I've been getting adequate battery life the past couple of days \~8 hours or so and it's nice that it boots up faster than my surface book. I also got really used to using a 3 finger swipe-down gesture on windows that aren't here and that was a little annoying at first but that's more on ChromeOS.

Honestly, lots to type here but #1 is value. I brought it to my parent's house this weekend and asked my dad to guess the price. He currently uses a 2019 MacBook Pro and He guessed it cost anywhere from $600-$800. He was shocked when I told him it was $300 and as an IT guy, really impressed that it had Wifi 6 built-in. The connectivity is up to date too with Bluetooth 5.0 and my personal favorite, ports on both sides. I'm not quite sure what charger it came with is charging but I really like that it can charge off my 45w phone charger as well. Carrying only 1 cable with me wherever I go now is going to be a game-changer. The integration with my pixel 6 is really nice too and being able to use my phone to unlock it kind of makes the lack of biometrics not nearly as bad. About as good as my surface book for media consumption too.

This Toshiba is a relative steal for $350, even though there are less expensive Chromebooks on the market.
It has 4GB of RAM (as much, we must note, as the $1,000 Surface Laptop coming this summer), and its performance was deemed excellent by our testers. It can simultaneously run several browser windows or streaming movies without a struggle.
This model doesn’t have a touch screen, so while you can use the Google Play Store to download apps, you’ll have to rely on the trackpad.

  Toshiba CB2 Cons: -The trackpad physical click isn't great. If you tap hard, it sounds unpleasantly like a click but you have to press much harder to get it to physically click which makes dragging difficult because the friction is so high. You can get around this by enabling tap to click and double tap to drag, but the physical click was hard to get used to. This is my first laptop with this click feature, so take this opinion with a grain of salt

Great laptop for the money!!! Some minor flaws.

 The Core i3 CPU helps the system boot up and load quickly. It's not a processing powerhouse, but for an affordable Chrome OS laptop that will mostly browse the Web, stream video, and run a few applications, it's plenty fast. I was able to multitask without lag or delay during testing.

TOSHIBA CHROMEBOOK IN-DEPTH REVIEW

  First two day's have each given me approximately six to seven hours of battery life, with about 20% or so remaining (according to the meter). Movies obviously take their toll.  Now onto CHROME: Super fast boot up.

 For comparison, our other laptop has only b/g/n. SpeedTest.net has our standard one at 52MBS, while the Toshiba clocks in a 155MBS! I've had a dozen tabs open, plus a movie on and this thing doesn't break a sweat. A big thumbs up!  Have had a couple of drops on day one, but it re-connected immediately

 Keyboard is reasonably comfortable. However, will take some getting used to because layout is slightly different than traditional keyboard layout found on laptop PCs. No ALL CAPS key, instead a "search" key in its place.  I would cautiously recommend this device to other people looking for a good Chromebook

 Where this device excels is in the screen quality, keyboard, trackpad, battery life and ease of use!  The display is top notch. Colors are bright and vivid and text is crystal clear. I do not use it outdoors, so I cannot comment on that, but all other usage has been great. The keyboard rivals and in some ways I'd say beats my Macbook Pro and the trackpad is very responsive and an absolute pleasure to use compared to most offerings on the many windows laptops I've used over the years

However I have had NO problems with it and it has withstood being carried around and used daily for the last 2 months. It's even stood up to a 4yr old who has bumped into it without even the slightest scratch

Amazing device for those familiar with Google Chrome and other Google applications/services!

 The keyboard is decent--okay key travel, nothing expensive or premium. The sound into my headphones is pretty good. I'm no DJ or audio expert, but it's evidently tuned by skull-candy, which is pretty much a fledgling name brand suited for budget purchases in audio ("better than nothing" applies here). The track pad is the 1st thing I noticed which kind of turned me off

 It turns on with medium CPU power usage like 1080p youtube videos, and when it does it makes this nice and alarming MOTOR sound. The MOTOR sound sounds just like there is actually some hair stuck in it, which makes the fan work harder. With this fan discrepancy I'm afraid that something on the computer will give-out before its average life expectancy.  One more tidbit: Even though the screen is only 1080p, this thing motors through 1440p video like nothing, with multiple youtube tabs opened playing the same resolution; I tested it :)  I am returning it reluctantly and with one caveat: If the fan didn't make that noise and the track pad was as it should be, I would NEVER consider returning this pretty sweet machine

The Intel Core i3 coupled with the top-notch screen is perfect for my casual use of a laptop. It makes casual surfing nice and exciting IMO

If you run your finger nail up from the bottom of the laptop towards the track pad, the track pad actually STOPS your finger from moving ONTO the track pad
