5.11 Rush12 vs Arc'teryx Granville 20 Pack

I'm looking for recommendations on backpacks that would be good for family day hikes in hot/humid weather (and in cooler weather). I really want something useful that doesn't result in an immediately sweaty back!

I loved this product. I would not have chosen it by seeing it on the internet, but when i tried it on in a shop, i understood immediately that i had found the perfect pack for me. i am not tall (1,63 cm) and I have trouble finding packs that don't lie low on my back and hurt me. This one fits me perfectly ; i can put inside whatever i need, and everyday people stop me on the street to tell me how beautiful it is and to ask me where i got it from

Another nice feature is the drainage holes at the bottom. If the water bladder springs a leak the water can quickly drain out the bottom before soaking the entire pack (it's happened to me before during hikes or MTB rides, I crashed once on the MTB and sprung a leak). I do have a couple suggestions for improvement: 1) I hike in the mountains and hills of Japan when I visit the country and I would like to use this pack as a carry on item with my notebook PC. The pocket in the main compartment is wide enough for most notebook PC but it could be better

but maybe a tight fit with the laptop in one of the bigger inner pockets. Quality on the 12 looks good.

- the laptop sleeve is a little awkward. You can fit your laptop in there but the sleeve doesn’t go to the bottom of the bag and instead ends about ¾ before it reaches to the bottom. This means if you use a laptop sleeve like myself who also keeps the charger in the sleeve, that “bulge” in the laptop sleeve is going to make it harder for you to reach to the bottom too

It’s a good commuter bag so far. I’m in NYC and have a 1.5 hr subway trip each way. I can fit all the junk I need to bring

The capacity of the pack is perfect for commuter use, with some simple and elegant design thinking. Essentially one large compartment, with a laptop sleeve coated in a soft fabric at the back, a zipped pocket and a couple of other sleeves to put papers, tablets etc. I find that everything I need to take to the office fits, with just enough room for climbing shoes and gym gear for after work. Initially I was worried that the seemingly narrow opening of the pack would be a problem, but it actually works really well and keeps things neat

This pack has worked out great! I wanted something smaller than the RUSH24 (I’ve had that pack for years) to build a pack for indefinite sustainment. A larger pack makes it easy to overfill with stuff you don’t really “need”, and that translates to more weight. My goal was a pack that equaled 10% of my body weight (or 18lbs). This pack fit everything perfectly snug

This bag is great, but smaller than youd expect, the way the top flap is manufactured, it doesn't fold out of the way when open, so it gets in your way when you try to access the main compartment. This is pretty frustrating and a surprising design coming from Arcteryx, who usually is very thoughtful about ergonomics like this.

There was a bend in the insert that caused a lump to ride on my back for the first few days until I figured out what the issue was. I took out the insert and cut it down (hard material to cut), hasn't been an issue since. 2) The straps shoulder straps tend to loosen up with normal use. Once every day or two, I find myself tightening the straps back down because they get looser

The magnetic closure is slick. However the straps are not up to Arcteryx quality like other bags such as the blade and the arrakis. The back pad seems to have been put on the chopping block as well. The bird is stitched rather than thermoformed

One other draw back is the zippers are operated with that pull cord which sucks, because the pull cord on one of my zippers broke. So now im gonna have to use a shoe lace or zip tie to fix the problem. That is litterally the only ounce of damage to this pack though, and ive been using it pretty harshly for about 2 years now.
