YT Capra Review: The Speedy All-Rounder | 2021 Summer Field Test

My vote is ripmo af for what you're describing and what you're likely to progress too. I ride a YT 27.5 Capra at 180/180mm it's an all out sled/freeride bike, it's so much fun going downhill.

I got into mountain biking at the start of Covid. I bought a hardtail and have been increasingly interested in steeper, looser, techier terrain as well as jump tracks. I find now it's less about wanting to pedal for the sake of pedaling, and more pedaling to get to the stuff that rattles my bones by the time I'm done. As such I want to make the switch to full sus. I'm going to sell the hardtail so I also want a bike that I can enjoy the occasional xc style ride where I spend the day pedaling 20+ miles and enjoying nature. That said, I want to get either an aggressive trail bike or a "light" enduro bike for ~4k (29er). Some options/examples are:

Privateer 141 - aggressive geo, love the specs, should be bulletproof, but it's heavy and maybe less refined than an Ibis, steep STA may feel awkward on more undulating or flatter terrain when you're pedaling a lot. I have a refundable deposit so presumably they'll respect the pre-markup $3,949 price I placed the deposit on.

Ibis Ripmo AF - Can get the cheaper $3400 deore build and swap my nicer parts from the hardtail. I'm not sold on the DVO suspension. Opinions compared performance elite 36 and dpx2? This is what I consider a "light" enduro bike (not referring to weight necessarily). It's not a 63 degree HTA sled, with the dw-link it's not a slog on the climbs, but still has enough travel to enjoy exploring gnarlier stuff and the occasional lift assist day. Also, it's an Ibis, it's a pretty sexy frame.

YT Jeffsy - don't like the 125mm dropper on a size M, "lack" of fitting a water bottle, and the 66 degree HTA. I want something a little more aggressive.

Vitus Escarpe CRX - all the bells and whistles (though I prefer performance elite over factory as I'm not a fan of the kashima look, sue me). My Vitus hardtail is noticeably less "refined" feeling compared to my brother's Chameleon for example, which I worry may present itself in the Escarpe (an example: exposed dropper cable under the bottom bracket). You can tell my Sentier was a cheaper produced frame (not bad in any way whatsoever), not sure how else to describe it. But in terms of bang for your buck, this is it. It is also heavy despite the Carbon front triangle. 

I'm looking for someone to argue why I should or shouldn't choose a bike, give me new ideas of bikes to look into, add a data point for opinions on how the bikes feel (particularly looking for opinions on the 141 and Escarpe, everyone raves about the Ripmo) and what people think about the DVO suspension (I haven't experienced it but it looks like people like it). I'm trying to balance a nicely spec'd bike with a nice frame (that I can't/is expensive to upgrade down the line).

Privateer 141 vs. Ripmo AF vs. others

 This Core 4 sees a purposeful and aggressive component spec that should withstand the rigors of the rowdiest bike park and enduro ride in, but it's still within a reasonable weight to let you pedal it up to the top of the hill without too much complaint. The formidable Fox 38 and Float X2 factory suspension package offers you all the adjustability and control you could possibly need. There's a full Sram X01 Eagle Drivetrain with the 10 to 52 cassette out back means you can winch yourself up the steepest of climbs with no problem, and there's a descendant carbon crank as well, just to shave a little bit of weight. The brakes are Srams code Rscs

 This is the Yt Capra. I've been spending the last month or so testing this bike across the Uk. I've come away thoroughly impressed, so I think we should dive into the bike a little bit more and discover exactly what has made it so special out on the trail. The Capra is Yt's full bore enduro ripper

 It's still snappy enough to, uh, kind of get you on the up the hill under your own power. Um, and I'd say for the most part, given that you're buying a long-legged enduro bike, you're not going to be too disappointed with the climbing performance. Overall, I've been pretty damn blown away by the latest generation of the Capra, and with Yt making big pushes to improve their customer service across the world, I'd have a hard time not recommending it to a friend. I hope you've enjoyed checking it out in this video

But that suspension is kinda wank. I'd at least look for 34mm forks and the RS DeluxeSelect+ or Fox Float. If you wanna go crazy for your weight you can try to snag a base level YT Capra, new or used, with that 38mm Zeb fork or whatever it has. A bit overkill?

Hello all. I’m a new rider on a 2022 stumpy alloy. Rockshox recon silver fork, xfusion pro RL02 or some such crap in the rear. I’m a bigger dude, like 6’3” 235 pounds. Riding in Phoenix AZ at south mountain and hawes. The chunk is real here. I’m working up to bigger and better. 

My question revolves around an experience I had, and my suspension. Basically, I’ve been getting pedal strikes on stupid stuff riding level pedals. Could be a technique thing. 

I had my sag too low like 35-40%. Adjusted it way higher like 20%. Now it just feels like dog shit. 

Not sure if I have as many complains for the fork yet. I know this bike is a generally “low BB” bike, so maybe I just need shorter cranks or better technique. But the rear shock is $100 brand new. It just doesn’t feel good. 

I’m eyeing a stumpy evo, which has fox factory kashima suspension. Would solve my problems for a lot of money (maybe) 

I’m not baller. I’m not going pro. I’m a new young dad (who works with his hands) trying to not break bones. Mainly having fun and trying to ride plush. Learning how to better absorb with my arms and legs, but still trying to plan for what comes next for me. My suspension isn’t worth a full rebuild (when that time comes) in my opinion. 

Open to any ideas. Would rather not hear people tell me I’m going to break bones whether I want to or not as it isn’t pertinent to the conversation.

YT Capra, Canyon Strive, Nukeproof Mega and Vitus Sommet are probably the best options in that budget if you have your heart set on CF.

Recommendations for enduro bikes

I’m a bigger guy that likes to ride a little bit of everything. Park, technical single track, flow, jumps/drops, you name it. I’m currently on a polygon siskiu d6. No major complaints with it, I just want something that can handle trips to the bike park and progressing to bigger  jumps/drops. Ideally I’d like to keep the price under $4000. Some preferences I have are 29” wheels, 150+mm of travel, and mineral oil brakes (not DOT fluid). Some bikes I’ve been eyeing are the Polygon N9, Trek Slash 7, Canyon Spectral 7, Giant Trance x 29 2. Obviously whatever I go with will have some waiting time, and that’s okay. What do you recommend?

Which full suspension all-mountain bike would you recommend?

Sorry for the long post.  I’m looking for a new bike after not riding for over 15 years.  My current bike is a 1996 Klien Mantra Pro that was part of my compensation package when I built the Klien website for Gary Klien back in 1995.

Over the pandemic I started watching a bunch of mountain bike focused YouTube channels and realized just how much mountain biking had changed.  Not just the bikes themselves (modern geometry, 29” wheels, disc brakes, no front derailleur) but also the places to ride.  No more riding on hiking trails but riding on trails that were actually made for biking.  

Seeing that I had several mountain biking areas close to me I decided to get my Mantra Pro tuned up and go riding this last Memorial Day.  Sunday, the night before I decided that it might be a good idea to ride around the neighborhood and get used to the braking and shifting again.  Got on my bike and the suspension bottomed out.  Tried to tell myself that the shocks just needed more air, but the truth was at 300lbs, I was just too heavy for the bike.  So on June 1st Memorial Day instead of going riding, I started getting in shape. I made two changes and a goal.

1. No more late night snacking
2. Exercise every day with the goal of hitting 10,000 steps

My goal was to lose 75 lbs and when I did, I could get a brand new mountain bike.  Today after 4.5 months I weighed in at 224.8 lbs and get to order my new bike.  I plan to get down to 200 lbs eventually but expect that last 25 to take a bit.

So I just turned 56, am down to 225lbs, and want to get back into mountain biking and am looking for advice on which bike to get.  To put in snowboard terms, I’m a green rider now with aspirations for the blues but probably won’t hit the blacks. Here are the top bikes on my list. I’ve got some longer travel bikes on there because even when I hit my ultimate goal weight of 200lbs, I’m still going to be a big guy.

**Polygon Siskiu T8:** This is my bang for the buck bike at $2,500.  I’d like a Fox 36 instead of the Fox 34 it comes with but full Shimano SLX for the drive train is nice.  This bike would be a nice way to get back into mountain biking while letting me save some money for an eBike later down the road.  I do have a concern about warranty since I wouldn’t be buying it from a local bike shop.

**Polygon Siskiu N9:** Another bargain at $3,300 with a Fox 36 and full Shimano XT drive train.  Same concerns at the T8.

**Giant Trance X 29 2:** At $3,500 I don’t know why I don’t like this bike more.  On paper it’s great with it’s Fox 36 and full Shimano SLX for the drive train.

**IBIS Ripmo AF NGX:** Really like this bike.  $3,500 with a Fox 34 and a mix of SRAM NX and GX for the drive train.  Lead time for this bike seems to be huge

**Specialize EVO Comp Alloy:** This bike was just announced at $3,800 with a Fox 36 and full SRAM NX drive train.  Really like the longer travel of this bike

**Trek Fuel EX 8:** At $3,900, the highest priced bike on my list.  Only comes with a Fox 34 but full Shimano XT for the drive train.

Those are the bikes I’m currently trying to decide between so let me know your thoughts or if you think I’ve missed a bike that really needs to be on my list.

Giant Trance X 29 2: At $3,500 I don’t know why I don’t like this bike more. On paper it’s great with it’s Fox 36 and full Shimano SLX for the drive train.

IBIS Ripmo AF NGX: Really like this bike. $3,500 with a Fox 34 and a mix of SRAM NX and GX for the drive train. Lead time for this bike seems to be huge

Specialize EVO Comp Alloy: This bike was just announced at $3,800 with a Fox 36 and full SRAM NX drive train. Really like the longer travel of this bike

Trek Fuel EX 8: At $3,900, the highest priced bike on my list. Only comes with a Fox 34 but full Shimano XT for the drive train.

Those are the bikes I’m currently trying to decide between so let me know your thoughts or if you think I’ve missed a bike that really needs to be on my list.

Getting my first new mountain bike

I have the base yt Capra ( more travel ) in the 29". Absolutely freaking love it. I don't have any other full suspension bikes to compare it too though so take my humble opinion for what it is. I will say I get really sendy with it and sometimes I don't have the best line or landing ( few cased landings ) the bike eats it up and hasn't let me down yet

Best bikes long term between $2000-$4000??

Looking to upgrade to a super enduro mtb, with 170 to 180 front and rear travel. Aluminum only, no carbon. Prefer shimano drive train but isn't a deal breaker. Sweet paint job a plus but not a must. Want 4 piston brakes and 200mm rotors. Budget is maxed at $4K. I am 6'-1" and 190lbs (or like 3,000 kgs?). 

Looking at the Norco shore 2 but curious what others would suggest. Know supply chain is an issue so prepared to wait til the fall for the right bike.

Super Enduro MTB

I dunno about the mullet setup but I have had the YT capra 27.5 since the beginning of summer and I love it. So fun downhill and it absolutely destroys drops and jumps, the 180mm travel is like a pillow.

Shipping for my next enduro bike and wondering what the community has to say.

I currently own a Santa Cruz Bronson C build XT, which I’ve been riding for two years now. 

Local trails are of two styles:
1) National Park, where I often ride with my wife and two kids (30%)
2) Ski mountain that offers a super exciting, really gnarly terrain. Think drops, DH trails, slabs and jumps. I’ll lift time to time…

My Bronson is awesome for 1, and a little of 2, but I recently started to feel « under-biked » because of that gnarly terrain. I am an aggressive rider... I’ll also do 1-2 enduro races during summer. Busted two rims this summer (cushcore now), upgraded rear hub for i9 hydra, installed a cascade link, trying things but, it always feels like I’m being dismantled apart when I release the brakes (which i like to do).

That said, what’s next? Looking for a better descender that won’t suck at climbing. Also, I’m really mullet curious.

Options I’m entertaining:
- YT Capra MX
- Santa Cruz Nomad
- Propain Spindrift MX
- Evil Insurgent MX

Notable mentions to Commencal, Yeti, Rock Mountain and Norco. I’ll probably keep the bike 2-3 years.
