This is an odd post, and might get removed, but the question isn't about skincare per se. Instead, it is about dealing with relatives, friends, and others who try to make you feel like you're foolish for taking care of your skin. 

So here's some context. My mum has had relatively problem free skin, and so has my brother. I have been a part of the "mostly great skin" club too, but unlike them, I have always like taking care of my skin (even if it meant using Lotus or Neutrogena sunscreens and besan packs that fit my limited budget as a student). I've never been great at makeup, and so skincare is my way of looking and feeling good. 

However, everyone has skin problems every now and then, and I'm no different. Late twenties introduced me to random pimples (the leave marks that take ages to fade away), excessive oiliness, and occasional dullness too. But my mother, and her brother feel the need to point out how oily my skin is (during summers), and how my pimples (likely caused by approaching periods, and purging because of AHAs) are because I put **so much stuff** on my skin. I don't. It's mainly standard stuff like moisturiser and sunblock. But to my mother, and my uncle, even things like face wash, moisturiser, and sunscreen are a waste of money. 

My uncle, who would graduate with honours from "Whatsapp University", thinks he knows better than doctors, and his herbal kadhaas and what not are better than all medicines. So not surprisingly, he thinks Dermatologists are also scam artists, and if I have oily skin, I don't even need a moisturiser. His ignorance is infuriating to say the least, and unfortunately, such people are everywhere. 

Their rationale works like this: I don't put anything on my skin, and it looks fine. Ergo, people who do put stuff on their skin are stupid, and all their skin issues are BECAUSE they use "cosmetics" like sunscreens and moisturisers. 

It really, really bothers me when they point out my skin flaws, and proceed to make me feel bad about wanting to take care of my skin. And their comments sting so much more when I'm already feeling vulnerable, or am in a bad state of mind.

I believe that I'm not the only one in this sub who has encountered the "anti-skincare" fanatics. I'm just not sure what to do with such people. Ignoring them doesn't detract them, and citing research is pointless because it's all "fake news". They're so stupid, rational discussions, or even easy rules like "live and let live" are beyond their comprehension.

How do you guys handle it?

 I'm happy I found it and will use it as often - it came with two tubes so I have plenty (and a little goes a long way).

I live in the Philippines. We only have two seasons here: dry and wet, and normally those two occur at the extremes (intense scalding heat and nonstop typhoons). 

I can't help but notice that a lot of media content on skincare is extremely US/Eurocentric. Every time we Asians go and search for skincare routines or products to cop, we end up getting pretty disappointed because a lot of them aren't agreeable with the weather conditions. 

Here are just some of the reasons why we tropical gals have a love-hate relationship with skincare:


1. Choosing the right amount of skincare to wear during the daytime is a challenge. I don't know a single normal person in this country who'd consider slapping on 2 serums, an oil, sunscreen, and moisturizer before heading out in the morning. In just 5 minutes of wear, you will be sweating like a pig and before you know it, you'll have wiped off your entire morning routine trying to keep sweat away with a towel.

2. Skincare before makeup becomes difficult to uphold. Because skincare melts off so easily, so does the makeup that sits on top of it. Don't even get me started on the powders and primers. You could use the heaviest duty primer here and still melt all your makeup off by the end of the day. It's like sticking your head into an oven. Putting on makeup almost always involves a tradeoff. If you're planning on wearing a lot of base, wear less skincare to avoid slipping and clumping. If you wanna wear more skincare, wear less base.

3. Skincare is poorly marketed. Ask any adult in this country how they think acne goes away, and they will say "by washing your face thrice a day". The #1 marketed skincare product here is an antibacterical foaming wash that is sooooo drying. The #2 marketed product is an anti-acne toner that feels and smells like acetone. Marketing for moisturizer? OLAY REGENERIST FOR ANTI-AGING. This may sound like a hasty generalization but I kid you not: a lot of people here only encourage moisturizing when you start getting wrinkles because they don't feel like you need it when you're a kid. As a result, local pharmaceuticals produce drying, anti-acne skincare lines for teens, and Olay for more mature women.

4. Good skincare is expensive and difficult to source. Deciem doesn't ship here. Deciem doesn't even have real official partners that have turned out 100% original products. Just this week I purchased a 2% salicylic acid that turned out to be a counterfit. Just get it straight from the site then? The shipping fee's gonna cost twice or thrice your purchase, and shipping customs is gonna hustle the hell out of you. Until Deciem finds a way to get here, were gonna keep dealing with tons of fakes. 


5. Skincare is becoming more common, but still socially ambiguous and frowned upon. Due to the lack of information on skincare suited to tropical weather, nobody really knows if they're doing it right or wrong. The elders here say you're giving yourself pimples by putting on products. The younger ones advocate for skincare. When you invest in skincare, a lot of people in this country consider it to be a display of vanity, and not in any way a means of self-love or improvement. There's an apparent lack of discussion on the relevance of skincare in this country.


At the end of the day, I'm just another frustrated skincare enthusiast who hopes that one day younger girls in my country can actually  learn how to take better care of their skin in this climate, and hopefully avoid copying what western beauty bloggers do or say just to be disappointed in the end.

[Personal] Skincare is difficult in a tropical country.

 Now don’t get me wrong, I enjoy the smell of sandalwood, but I was anticipating a light scent that would fade over time- this is not that. I would recommend this for people who want to smell like sandalwood all the time and feel like it’s their signature scent- perhaps my nose is too sensitive, but it was overwhelming to have on at times.

Too thick, feels heavy on skin, cloggs my pores which causes pimples, and the smell is way too strong. I normally like earthy scents and the sandalwood smell, but this stuff is unpleasant smelling and strongly so. I won't use it on my face anymore because even even I water it down, it's too thick and smelly.

What is that one product that changed your skin completely? That you thank your luck for bringing into your life? That you can't stop raving about?

 Moisture wise it's great, my skin loves it, it's been maybe 2 plus months and I can see a difference.
