Don’t buy a Trek Marlin of any number if you are looking to get into trail riding. TLDR: you can’t upgrade a Marlin. What you buy is what you’re stuck with unless you want to spend more money than the bike is worth. Source: I currently own a Marlin 7.

Bought a 2020 Trek Marlin 7 WSD size medium last year while abroad and LOVED it, but due to pandemic was forced home on very short notice and my bike is still overseas. Would buy this bike again in a heartbeat given how affordable it was and how much joy it brought me (but again, my comparison was 20 year old clunker). The Trek Marlin has been a really popular bike from our shop this year. Really decent, entry-level, hardtail.

That being said, as long as you stick with a good brand you’re probably not going to get a bad bike whatever you pick.

I would go for Trek Marlin or Giant Talon. There is about 7 different models in each and you could pick one that fits your need and price range. They are great starter MTBs and easy to learn to maintain and have great components for being entry level.

I'm right there with you, at my heaviest ever. I just recently picked up a Trek Marlin 7, not exactly meant for riding around the neighborhood and fitness. I wanted a road bike but decided I'd be better off with a mountain bike since they're built to take stress, like my fat ass riding it around. I'm not riding it as regularly as you, but I've got 6 kids and my wife also works full time.

Looking to upgrade from a Trek Marlin 7 to a dual suspension. I ride trails with lots of roots, rocks, ect and they are usually like 10 mins descend, then a 15 min climb. I also intend to ride on the rail trail and road every so often.

Sweet ride! I like the converted mtn bike look. And those fenders are awesome. I'm finishing up a conversion on a Trek Marlin 7 and fender clearance is terrible, plus also no mounts on the fork. Definitely gonna consider these!

A marlin 7 for 400 that fits you is a good deal. Unfortunately That doesn't look like a marlin 7 it has cable disk brakes and what looks like a low end fork. That looks like a marlin 4 or 5. In which case 400 dollars is not a good deal.

as someone who went marlin 7, don’t. It’s got it’s drawbacks. Buy the better bike. And if you’re already about to spend $1300 you might want to go on pinkbike and check out what they have for complete bikes under $1300.
