<div class="md"><p>Looking into getting a new bike. Currently live in Ontario but planning on moving Van/Squamish next summer. I currently have a 2019 Trek Fuel EX 8 that I love but I want to upgrade before I head out (could maybe hold onto this and have 2 bikes but probably not the smart financial play). I much prefer the descent but want to be able to climb (doesn’t need to be fast uphill) and would like to be able to go for multi-hour rides. Brand options are Santa Cruz, Rocky Mountain, Norco, and Pivot. I was out in BC this past summer and rode a Commencal Meta AM 29”, a SC Megatower, and a V10 (in Whistler bike park). Never really had to climb any days on these bikes (buddy has a Tacoma and we did shuttle laps), but this won’t always be an option. Would something like a SC Hightower be too little for Squamish or the odd bike park day? Should I bump up to a Megatower or Altitude (even though I’m not a fan of the 2022 colourway)? What kind of travel do you have for your bike if you’re in the Sea to Sky and don’t have a stable of mtbs? Thanks in advance.</p>

<p>Edit: I know I don’t need to update but I want to. I know I want more travel than the 130/130 I currently have and a little more aggressive geo. I work at a bike shop that carries these brands, hence the limitations. I hop on my wife's Trek fuel ex 9.8 and it feels much more responsive on xc type trails - made these mellower trails way more fun than my slash.

I purchased a Ripmo V2 last year while on vacation on the west coast. It was a blast to ride around LA and the Bay Area, but it's not so well suited to the trails I have access to in New York and Maryland. 

The Ripmo just doesn't feel suited to slower riding on twisty, rooty, rocky rails. The geometry feels way too slack and it's just not responsive enough to give me confidence ... it feels like I'm understeering in corners, and in general lacking agility and nimbleness.

Soooo ... the search begins again for a more suitable ride. I've decided a lighter bike with less travel would likely be a better choice, as I'm rarely taking jumps or riding super aggressively. Something with 120-140mm front travel should be good. Attributes that are important to include great climbing responsiveness, the agility to navigate twistier forest trails, while also having enough suspension to help me stay out of trouble if I get out of my depth on the descent. I also want to buy from a widely reviewed and recognized brand for resale value and long term support.

That still leaves a ton of options, and honestly my head is spinning. Are there any no-brainer options out there to shortlist?

An awesome frame (perfect geo, the material of your choice, beautiful color, excellent suspension design, etc.), or great components (the brakes you really like, nice drivetrain, reliable dropper, etc.)? Assume that if you choose high-end components, the frame is average. Same thing with frame.

FRAME vs. COMPONENTS (Read description for more info...)

2021 Trek Top Fuel 9.8. Light and nimble enough to race XC, but enough travel and right geometry to take on marathon races or long days in the big mountains.

Anyone feel that they ALREADY have their ideal bike, and if so what is it?

So I’m new to MTB and I’m a casual rider. I go on rails to trails with my wife and like to hit up some regular trails here and there but I don’t get a chance to ride no more than 4-6 times a month.  I bought a GT Aggressor Pro from Dicks but now after seeing how I’m liking MTB and seeing that it’s something I’m more than likely going to stick with I’d like to get something a little more trustworthy and better built. With the unfortunate shortage of bikes I see that Polygon is at least taking preorders and can ship them out within 10 days…or so the site says. I have been trying to track down a Trek as well. I’m not set on a Trek but that’s what everyone in my snooty town likes to ride on so I figured I’d follow suit. The local bike shops however say they won’t have any in for a while and could possibly be towards the end of the year. So…wait around in hopes of a Trek or go with a Poly? What would be your reasoning behind your suggestion?  Thanks so much!!

How many bikes do you own?

I started on a Trek Fuel ex.  It was a great first full-suspension bike for about 1,300 used.  Upgraded after a year to a Santa Cruz 5010.  Check out the Fuel EX
