 It's an excellent portrait lens. It's good for general purpose photography. They tend to be exquisitely sharp and have excellent optical performance all around. and so

 And that may be part of this new transition. So to kind of come to a summation, the extra additions to this lens probably now propel it to a place that even maybe even slightly beyond that of the Canon it's it's added some significant things. In terms of its overall build, you can feel that it's it's at just a little bit higher grade than what they can is. and so that's a big a big step for a Tamron lens and has a better autofocus ring excuse me, a better manual focus ring and now at Autofocus is just as good as what the Canon does and has a you know, a more purpose-built image stabiliser and so it's moved ahead in a lot of areas and I would say now that it is competing and perhaps exceeding on merit alone

 but I Have noted that this is one area where Tamron tends to fall short sometimes is that the light transmission could be a bit better. So what that means is that you may need a bit more light with this to get an equivalent exposure to what you would need with the Canon And then finally, more of a minor observation. And that is that I find that I don't know if it's because of the the accelerometer, but I find that the VC or vibration compensation is a little bit more noisy on this lens. not that it's loud or obnoxious, but just a little bit more noisy than what I'm accustomed to from Tamron lenses

8 macro or the F00 for I found it to be quite an excellent lens and very close to my Canon and its overall performance. And so the question some might ask is why is Tamron releasing so quickly that lens was is less than three years old? Why are they releasing another version of that lens already? Well, I Think that there are several answers to that question and one of those is that this lens is an update of the casing and the functionality of the previous generation lens, but it shares most of its Opt traits. And and I think that what they have done with this lens is very akin to what Zeiss just did with their Mill This line in which while there are a couple of lenses with a completely new optical formula, there are also four of them that are a kind of modernizing existing optical formulas that were already very good. And so I see number one as this is a means of standardizing this very excellent lens to their new SP or Super Performance Prime Series online ad to which the first lenses in that were the 35 and the 45 Millimeter F 1 Point 8 VC They've also announced not yet quite released, but announced an 85 millimeter F 1 Point 8 VC a lens that I'm really excited to get my hands on in another few weeks and so Number One

Tamron SP 90mm f/2.8 Di Macro 1:1 VC USD Final Review | Finally There?

The Tamron 90mm is an excellent lens. I have the first generation one (manual focus, 1:2, metal lump) and it's excellent.

I'm an amateur photographer who messes around with macro. I have always been interested in it, but only recently (like a year ago) got a real macro lens. 

I use a Sony a7iii, an adapted Tamron 90mm f2.8 1:1 macro lens (adapted from A-mount) and $40 Bolt brand "bug eye" light. I always shoot handheld as I don't have any patience for tripods, and the bugs and wind blown flowers don't either. 

What I have trouble with is focusing. I use focus peaking, but since the lens is attached to a dummy adapter, I don't get the AF it has built in, nor the ability to automatically use the zoom feature for focusing. Also, I shoot in dusk or later light levels, and so focus peaking barely even shows up from not having enough light. 

What should I get first? Should I get a modern lens that's manual focus? 
(I don't think so as that won't solve any issues).

Should I get a nice Laowa kx-800 flash system?
(Seems like it might be a good investment, but is it going to just show how bad the lens is when it actually gets light?)

Should I get a nice AF lens from Sigma or someone without OSS and just save the $500 over getting the Sony that had the OSS?  
(My current lense had no AF or OSS, so the AF would be a game changer, but is it worth getting a $500-700 lens and NOT getting the one with OSS for $950?)

Lens or flash?

 Since there was only one review here on Amazon I was a little hesitant to order. Since I wanted a 1:1 macro without spending a fortune, the only other serious contender was the Pentax 100mm Macro - however, Tamron is currently running a $[..

.it seems relatively well built but contains a bit more plastic than expected. The lens comes packed in a nice padded lens bag with drawstring [a nice little extra] and lens hood so no need to purchase either separately. It's very easy to install and the automatic function works seemlessly with the Pentax auto focus

again, perhaps this is an isolated experience but the first Tamron lens had to be returned due to inability to manually set aperature. The second worked but only in manual mode - would not function in aperature priority mode [Pentax K20D] and it is important to remember to change the settings in the Menu area of the camera body to allow aperature settings on the actual lens [it's the next to last setting on page 6 of 7 for those of you searching for it].  Again, being new to Pentax and DSLR's in general perhaps this aperature set-up is more common than I realize [been using plain point and shoot after holding out for years with standard SLR's like the old Maxxum series from Minolata.

.I know - slow to change]. Even after changing the aperature on the lens it will not display as with all other modes. I was expecting tighter integration although it doesn't seem to impact the quality of the photo itself which is very nice

 Not only for macro, but this is hands down the best portrait lens I own. I love the focusing range on this too, as like I said earlier, you can bring just about anything into focus with this lens at almost any distance from the lens. True 1:1 magnification is also superb to have in my arsenal of lenses. It's also a lot of fun to use, and the 90mm focal length really forces you to get creative

  Cons: My biggest gripe about this lens is how shallow the depth-of-focus gets at 1:1. At anything below f16 it is impossible to get the entire subject into focus. I believe this is inherent in almost all macro lenses, but I didn't have such a big issue with the macro tubes. If you are looking to take great macro pics using a wider aperature, you might want to look into focus stacking if you are unfamiliar because the area in focus that this lens allows at its largest f-stop when at 1:1 is a sliver of the whole picture you are trying to take

Great multi-purpose lens with a few caveats

  As other reviewers have noted it is not particularly fast focusing. It is especially slow in the macro range, or when using live view (K-S2 here; no live-view focusing slouch), or like any lens in low light. And it's REALLY slow in macro range WHILE in live view. But if you use the phase-detect autofocus through the viewfinder it's fine for just about anything except significantly moving subjects

I agonized over this purchase. I haven't used the Pentax 100mm f/2.8 WR, but I did borrow the previous version for a day a few years ago. I knew that the WR version had to be an excellent lens, but I couldn't justify the cost

Excellent quality, not very fast focusing

The image quality of this lens is great. For me, the only negative point is the autofocus, whuch is slow and hunts a lot. That's common with macro lenses, so I'm just being picky. But if you've ever tried the much more expensive Canon 100mm L-series macro

it has a way of spoiling you and making you pickier. I returned mine based on my preference, but I can't say it was truly the fault of the lens. As long as you know what to expect, it's a good purchase.

(Another year and one repair later, I still love this lens. Original review first followed by updates.)  First impression: right out of the box, this lens is smaller than I pictured. I had experience with the Sigma 105mm, and this is easily smaller and lighter

Updated (again) thoughts on the Tamron 90mm

I'm new to the DSLR world and have a Nikon D7000, Nikon 35mm 1.8 prime, a Sigma 17-50 2.8, and Tokina 11-16 2.8

 The focus isn't as noisy or as loud as I was afraid it would be and auto focus seemed to work fairly well (appx 70 percent of my shots were in focus). The lens does extend with focus, but the barrel does not turn so polarizing filters would work. It feels decent in the hand and the weight is pretty minimal. I pulled up the photos in Lightroom and was impressed with the quality and sharpness for my first time handheld shots

 I like to do garden and food photos and this was the lens I finally decided upon. I compared the Nikon 105 2.8 and the Sigma 150 as well as the Tamron 90mm. I just got it today, poped it on the camera and went to the local garden nursery for a trial spin

 The macro capabilities of this lens are second to none in this focal range, and the performance/price ratio simply can't be beat.  A lot of the other reviews have already hit on the highs and lows of the lens, so I won't waste your time by saying the same things over again. When I was making my macro choice, the two options I landed on were this Tamron and Canon's 100mm L. I had worked a lot with the Canon 100mm L before (borrowing, renting), and the performance was splendid

 The greatest advantages the L has are the autofocus and weather sealing, in my opinion, and neither of those matter to me as I use manual focus for nearly all of my macro shots and I'm not doing the sort of nature photography that makes weather sealing imperative.  I would recommend this lens in a heartbeat as a primary macro lens and an interesting portraiture lens as well.

The sharpness of this lens simply blows me away. I do a lot of macro work in wedding photography for my business, but I also love taking this lens out for simple hobby days in nature. The macro capabilities of this lens are second to none in this focal range, and the performance/price ratio simply can't be beat.
