The Somewear Global Hotspot is a piece of hardware from a smaller company that uses a proven satellite network and SOS monitoring service. The device itself is compact, light, and low profile. It is slightly larger than others, but not by enough to actually matter. With the availability of a small handful of similar devices and services, the competitors are being forced to compete on price. The initial purchase price of the Global Hotspot is similar to other options, but the subscription plans are a little less expensive than average. Depending on how you intend to use your wilderness communicator, the Global Hotspot can be much cheaper than the alternatives. For instance, with their "Plan Ultralight," you can use the Hotspot a few times a month, over five years, for hundreds of dollars less than using another device in the same way. 
There are some drawbacks to the Hotspot. Most notably, there is no way to view incoming text messages on the device itself. All you can do with the device alone is turn it off and on, activate tracking, and send an SOS message. The ability to activate tracking from the device is new to the absolute latest version. We tested this new version in late 2021 and early 2022. In comparison, on the inReach Mini 2, you can view or send rudimentary messages directly on the device and through the phone app. Overall, we find the Hotspot to be simple and affordable. We had some hardware issues in testing the second version, but Somewear Labs' customer service was prompt and effective.

What sets the Somewear apart most is its incredibly simple, easy-to-learn interface that makes messaging and acquiring the latest weather forecast a breeze. Further, with a relatively light 4-ounce build and compact form factor, it’s streamlined yet still entirely backcountry-ready with good weather resistance and stress certifications for shock and vibrations (IP68). Finally, unlike the Garmin above, the Global Hotspot’s app is compatible with cellular and WiFi networks—a great feature that provides seamless communication for those who frequently move in and out of service, including thru-hikers, international travelers, and those that live in rural areas.

To add to our praise, the Somewear Global Hotspot has one of the most affordable subscription services here, with a simple $25 activation fee (for the base-level plans) and the option of an “ultralight” annual subscription of just $8.33 per month. Bumping up to a slightly more expensive plan will get you the flexibility to put your contract on hold without the suspension or flex plan fees we see from the likes of Garmin and SPOT. The only major downside to the Somewear’s design is the lack of unlimited preset messages or check-ins, which are helpful for staying in touch while keeping costs low (you get 75 location shares per month in the ultralight plan). And unlike the inReach, you’ll have to bring your smartphone along in order to use most functions. But there’s still a lot to love about the Somewear, especially for those that aren’t particularly tech-savvy, making it one of our favorite satellite messengers of the year.See the Somewear Global Hotspot

 One was to my work cell phone and that that work just fine. I sent a message from the somewhere global hotspot again, which is this to my Garmin nourish. Many still have not seen if it's received a message on that and now I just sent one to my spot back. So I see a message number one that let's come up on my spot X, the spot X here

 So, let's check out the earth mate app here which is connected to my Carmen in rich mini and let's see what the messages I herded beat. That would indicate that it had received the message, but I'm actually not seeing it yeah it's not. It has not received the message on the Garmin English mini so from right now, from from the summer to the Garmin. It'S not working, and so that means I'm gon na follow up with another test to make sure that's working, it's it's nice! It'S working with the spot X, but it's not working with the Garmin and right now the Garmin inReach Mini, which is what I carry and the Garmin Explorer plus, is what my son carries and my daughter is gon na be carrying I'm gon na be buying one For her also, but that's what we use is the grommet on

 It does work, but not with the garment. Yet at this point you can also check the weather and the weather for when you know wherever. But then you can do the tracking, which I showed you and that's successful, working well and, of course, they're setting sort of different things that you can do, but yeah, basically things the things, the three things messaging, the weather and the tracking really nice device. You could see this is a really big phone

 You can't I'm not it's Nick. You can't sync to your phone. So what I'll do is I'll create the message here, so you I hit that icon in the bottom right hand, corner here's the message, so I have to use the keyboard now. So I'm just gon na put in received message, see it took three minutes or so, and that may be a long time for you, but when you're in the mountains - and you don't have any way communicating three minutes, two three four minutes - it doesn't matter, but you Can you know still message people so receive message, and I'm done with that

 If i was offline on the messaging on the app here to be able to put the pins on there and show whoever i was trying to contact where i'm at down in the woods, so they could come find me or come join me down here for the Campfire or whatever you know just whatever message you need to send if it's emergency, then of course you've got the sos if you take the little blue cap off the end of the device here. But this thing works really well and even down here in the in the woods, a weather forecast, and then it shows the map that i was using earlier when i downloaded one. But it's not pulling one in now, because it it can't get the sell signal to be able to pull a map in right. Now it's a great option to be able to have with you when you're out hiking, when you're out hunting or, if you just break down on the side of the road

 And if you get send somebody a message that to follow you on the device, then, if you put the pen markers on the map, then those will show up as messages in the app or the app will send those messages to the person who is following you. So that they can tell your progress that you're making trying to get out of wherever it is you're going now the other thing that it will do if you have a little bit of cell coverage, is it will get you weather reports so, if you're out somewhere, That your app on your phone is not getting it the weather reliably. Then you can use this to be able to download an accurate weather report for the area that you're in now this thing, instead of working off like the gps satellites or the different communication satellites that just use the regular cell type phone signals, this uses the iridium Satellite systems and unlike the gps systems that don't cover the whole globe, the iridium satellite systems do cover the whole globe. So you can use this thing pretty much anywhere that you go to be able to communicate with whoever you need to get in touch with when you're out, and you don't have good cell coverage anywhere

 That is not in that area to let them know that you're, safe and you're, not in any danger. Now you can't make phone calls through the app, but you can send text messages or if you are in danger, then you can use this to send an emergency message and then have somebody come to you and help you get out of whatever situation. You happen to be in at the time. It does require a data plan that you can subscribe to now

We Review the Somewear Global Hotspot

hey guys today we're out on the road and 
we're doing a little testing of a new product  

this is the somewear device and it's somewear as 
in somewhere w-e-a-r as opposed to w-h-e-r-e so  

what this device does is it gives you emergency 
contact capabilities when you're out and you  

don't have good cell signal to be able to contact 
somebody if you're having a problem so this is how  

the somewhere comes packaged good solid cardboard 
box and then it has a cutout for the device itself  

and then the charging cable is down there below 
the little quick start instructions type thing  

we've finally got our sign put up and so it 
now everybody can hopefully find the place  

based on this sign as opposed to trying to 
find our mailbox and the driveway here so  

if you're ever in the area you can see the sign 
the device it's a very nice for what it does  

it's a has the satellite reception as long as 
you've got a a clear view of the sky then you  

can get a signal with the the device we've got 
no signal down here at the end of the driveway  

but with the device i can get to the the app if 
you don't have cell coverage at all then you can  

use this to send text messages you can send 
use it to send emails if you email somebody  

with this unless they've got the app on their 
device they will not be able to email you back  

but they will be able to receive the email 
through their regular email but if you text them  

even if they don't have the text the app on 
their phone they can still text you back so  

this is a it's two-way texting only one-way email 
if the other if the person receiving the email  

does not have the app on their phone uh the other 
thing that you can do with this if you don't have  

cell coverage is you can send an sos 
and this blue cap right here covers

the button for the sos press and hold that 
button for like six seconds and it sends  

the sos to a company that somewhere works with 
to be able to get the emergency signal and get  

people out to you keep that covered unless you 
actually need to use it got a bungee on the back  

of it here you can attach this to your belt 
so that when you're going through the woods  

you can have it on your side now it works better 
to have it laying flat it works better that way  

and you need a clear line of sight to the sky if 
you have at least a little bit of cell coverage  

then you can also download maps through the the 
app and then you can use those maps when you're  

offline and you don't have cell coverage to be 
able to figure out what route you need to take  

to get back to wherever you're going if you've 
gotten lost in the woods or wherever you can  

use this to help find your way back out of it and 
if you get send somebody a message that to follow  

you on the device then if you put the pen markers 
on the map then those will show up as messages in  

the app or the app will send those messages to the 
person who is following you so that they can tell  

your progress that you're making trying to get out 
of wherever it is you're going now the other thing

the messages that i have sent to her and it so 
it looks just like your regular messaging app  

on your phone and it works the same way 
if you want to to type a message then you  

just click in the box and start typing and 
it works exactly like your messaging app

the weather report upper 70s low 80s most 
of the week this week so that would be nice
