Sorry in advance for the long question.

I’m looking to fill a gap in my bike stable.  I'm primarily a road biker, and I have a very nice road bike that I’m very happy with and am very protective of.  I also have a Frankenstein’s monster of a bike that I use for commuting.  Finally I have an older hybrid that I used to use for more casual rides with the girlfriend, or when the weather/road conditions are too gross for my roadie.  However, that bike has found a nice home on my indoor trainer, and I’d like to keep it clean and set up inside rather than having to do a deep clean every time I use it outside, and that’s the gap I’m looking to fill.  Naturally, my first thought is a gravel bike, but that feels like it overlaps a bit too much with the road bike and this seems like a good opportunity to perhaps enable some off road riding.

I don’t know anything about mountain bikes and my head has been swirling with all these new categories and components and standards that are involved.  I think I’ve narrowed it down to a hardtail XC or trail bike.  I’d like to make sure to buy enough bike to not immediately outgrow it if I do get more into mountain biking, but I also don’t want to buy way too much bike.  I’d love some advice about what components are actually important.

Purpose:
Road rides in the cold and wet and sloppy; casual rides on road and gravel/fire roads/rail trails; off road trails, probably more flow style than anything, I don’t really seem myself taking any huge jumps.  I’m not too concerned about using flat bars for all this, I’ve used them for years and I have a road bike if I really need to go super fast.

Budget:
I’m willing to spend what it takes to get something quality that I won’t grow out of immediately.  I’d ideally spend ~$1200-$1300 but am able to go up to $2000 if it comes with a significant increase in quality.

Questions:
What components are actually worth extra money, and what level should I be tarteting?

Fork: 
I know I should be aiming for air suspension, but am confused about other aspects.

30mm stanchions or more?  I see a lot of bikes at this level come with Rockshox Judy level, would it be better to target something beefier like the 35?

100mm/120mm/140mm/more?  100mm seems to be the XC bike standard, but I feel like that would be more limiting if I ever aim for more technical trails.  Is this something I should worry about?

Wheels:

27.5 vs 29?  Since I am looking to ride more road/gravel/flow type routes, it seems like a 29er is the obvious choice.  Is this right?  Am I limiting my search too much by not looking at 27.5” bikes?

QR/Thru Axle/Boost?  I see that a number of bikes in my price range come with quick release axles but I also see recommendations online to go with thru axles with boost spacing for better strength and to keep my options open for future upgrades.  Is this actually important?  Should I be spending up to make sure to avoid QR?

Geometry:
It seems like head tube angle has a big effect on ride feel.  Is there a sweet spot I should be looking for?  Is 68ish on an XC bike too limiting for trail?  Is 65ish on a trail bike too slack for the road?

Drive train:
So far it looks like bikes in my price range come with SX Eagle or Deore level, but I’m seeing 1x10 all the way up to 1x12.  It seems like the 1x12 is the most modern and obviously provides a bigger range, but would I really be too unhappy if I end up with 1x11 Deore?  Would it limit me too much for future upgrades?  Should I be looking to make the jump to XT or GX?

Options:
I know this is going to be entirely dependent on what I can actually get, but here are a few models that are jumping out at me.

Polygon Xtrada 7 - seems to have basically everything I need at a very attractive price.  Fork seems like it might be a bit mediocre, is 120mm travel too little?  Also doesn’t seem to be available any time soon.

What's actually important in a new mountain bike?

 Don't do that. A full suspension is far more comfortable and as a beginner, you spend more time in the saddle.

I have a Stumpjumper Pro and a 2022 Santa Cruz Chameleon (and a Specialized Helga fat bike for winter). I have spoken to many male riders who want to get their female partner an entry level hardtail to get into mtbing. Don't do that. A full suspension is far more comfortable and as a beginner, you spend more time in the saddle

Hey Ladies! My wife is dipping her toe into MTB and I’m wondering if Liv is worth a look or any bikes you recommend? Anything special I should keep in mind?

I am learning to fix my bike myself as my 90s hard tail has suffered a few injuries, but I’m by no means a wizard with a wrench. There’s also a Honzo about 2 hours away. However, it’s not much cheaper than the Santa Cruz and with that distance, it’s not exactly a “local” bike shop in terms of serving etc. For Midwest single track trails with steep elevation and lots of roots and rocks, but no major jumps, am I wasting my money on the Chameleon?

  

One year ago I bought my Trek Fuel EX 7.   I was a road bike cyclist my whole life until I bought my Trek and fell in love with mountain biking.  Being road and mountain biking both involve bikes, my brain wanted to somehow reconcile the two but I found them to be as indifferent as any two sports (I would suggest that mountain biking may have more in common with skiing than with road biking).

While different people have different experiences, here is how I have been able to parse the two sports:

1) **Performance vs Skill.**  Road biking is about the the sum of the parts.  Mountain biking is about the parts.  

When I returned from road rides my wife would ask me how the ride was. I would always answer, "I have no idea - I haven't checked my numbers yet." \[e.g. power meter and HR data, Strava segments, etc.\] She would then ask, "But did you have fun?"  I had no idea how to answer this.  Unless I was biking in beautiful countryside or mountains, fun was never part of the equation. 

Road cycling is to many (and was to me) about performance.  

Mountain biking, OTOH, is largely (mostly?) about skill.  A rider's fitness, strength, and endurance will only get them so far on a mountain bike.  

Each MTB ride is a series of dopamine hits. Sometimes I'm able to do a feature for the first time.  Other times I do the same feature but much better.  Every time my wife asks me if I had fun after a MTB ride, the answer is always an enthusiastic "Yes!!!" And then I proceed to tell her (bore her?) about all the things I can now do, or do better.  

2) **Safety**.  As someone who was hit by trucks on two different occasions, I feel that MTBing is a lot safer.  I will have more accidents, more cuts, scrapes and bruises on my MTB, but the cumulative effect of these injuries will most likely pale in comparison of what my next encounter with a truck would bring.   

In mountain biking, if you have an accident, there's an 80-90% it's your fault.  If you are in a serious accident in a road bike, it probably a 70-80% chance it's someone else's fault.  

3) **Improvement**.  Unless you are racing and you are building your racing skills (e.g. riding a crit), the primary way to improve on a road bike is to get faster.  In mountain biking, there are so many different skills.  There's downhill skills (e.g. railing berms), drops, jumps, skinnies, wheelies, manuals, etc.  There's so much variety and always a chance to get better at something.

4) **Focus**. On a road bike, you can let your mind wander.  You can daydream, practice mindfulness, or mentally go through that next presentation.  You can dream about the future or reflect on t the past.  On a MTB, you have to live in the moment.  It takes way too much focus to think of anything else but what's several yards in front of your tire. 

5) **Relationship with the bike**.  On my road bike, I feel one with my bike.  It is like an extension of me.  Except for climbing out of the saddle, cornering, or descending mountain switchbacks, I feel bolted in - the living engine of this machine.  I view my MTB as my dance partner.  We often do different things  but in coordination with each other. 

6) **Riding comfort**.  When I ride my road bike in the summer, the wind I create is nice but the sun still beats on my skin. On my MTB I am under the canopy of the forest and it never seems that hot. Moreover, in the winter, the wind created by my speed on a road bike adds to the windchill making it a frigid experience (unless I take 20 minutes to layer up). On an MTB I'm never going that fast which makes it a little warmer for me.  Moreover, I HATE wind (well, at least headwinds).   I just don't encounter wind in the forest in any meaningful way.   

7) **Bikes**.  In road biking you can absolutely buy speed.  Deep carbon wheels, aero bike, super light components, etc. can give you an extra 2-4 MPH on your average ride.   But in mountain biking, while you can still buy speed to some degree, deep pockets will only get you so far - skills is where it's at.  A great mountain biker can do magic on a fairly entry level mountain bike - a nicer bike is optional but you can still do great things on a low end bike.   When you can get 2-4 additional MPH from having the right road bike, the bike matters a lot more.

I have an aluminum Trek - very mid-range - and people with much nicer bikes seem to love the paint job and compliment me all the time. I think to a mountain biker the bike is far less part of the equation than the rider - so they are more open to appreciating the aesthetics of the bike.  

**8)  Community**.  I never found road cyclists to be as obnoxious as their reputations suggest (which could mean that I'm a bit obnoxious myself!).  But it's absolutely my experience that MTB riders are far more laid back.   With road biking being so much about performance, there's an intensity to road cyclists.  Unzipped rain jacket?  Are you crazy?  Do you know how much drag that's creating?   

 Where mountain biking is so much about skill, there's more focus on sessioning and working on specific features.  And MTBers work with each other to help them develop their skills.    


Anyway, that's what I've gained over the past 12 months.  Would love to get your comments.

MTB Convert - What I've learned between mountain biking and road biking

I ride a Santa Cruz Chameleon that I've been running as a 27+ and really like. However, it always feels kinda twitchy on long steep downhills.

I like the idea of mullet bikes but I'm wondering if there are any pros and cons??
