Ideal 1 ski quiver for all mountain skiing, 100-107mm
The QST 106 mount is a bit further forward than the QST 99, which makes the ski feel a bit more playful than the 99, but they're otherwise very similar. It's a really well-rounded ski. The K2 Mindbender 108Ti is very similar option, with a little bit more float than the QST 106.

Salomon QST 106 188cm right length?
With that said a short narrow ski IS difficult in powder, even you are the type of person who can ski a short narrow ski in powder, yes its possible, yes some people do it really well, no it is never better that something like a QST 106 188cm. You were a true expert than I would say something longer (IE a different ski) would be better in powder but right now the QST will be great and huge step up with out overwhelming you.

I really loved those skis but it's time to admit they're done. Unfortunately Salomon stopped this model a few years ago otherwise I would gladly have bought the latest version. I'm not sure the QST 106 are equivalent (plus they really are ugly) and I'd like to know what model would be a good alternative. Rocker 2 were a perfect match for what I used them for meaning powder days in and around ski resorts.
